Bob Stoops is building something special.
He just got Dallas Jesuit linebacker Jordan Mastrogiovanni to commit to an Oklahoma football team that already includes newcomers Eric Striker, Charles Tapper, Sterling Shepard and John Michael McGee. Oh, and the guy in line to replace punter Tress Way is Jack Steed.
All of these youngsters have a shot to crack OU's all-time All-Name Team.
What, you never heard of the Sooners' all-time All-Name Team? Neither had I, actually, until I killed a half-hour creating it.
The unveiling...
J.C. Watts, QB
A cool name that becomes hall of fame worthy when you recall what J.C. stands for: Julius Caesar. Julius Caesar Watts.
He'll have a place on this team forever.
Elvis Peacock and Buster Rhymes, HBs
A few years ago, I picked up my son from Monroe Elementary. He had heard the name of the rapper for the first time and thought it was the bomb. "Busta Rhymes!" he kept yelling.
I brought him straight home and YouTubed the 1980 Bedlam game. Watts ran the option and pitched to the trailing halfback. And there he went, 66 yards down the boundary like a flash.
Now, Holden thought George "Buster" Rhymes was the bomb.
Jermaine "Gumbo" Fazande, FB
Strongly considered Weldon Ledbetter and Kenyon Rasheed, used the nickname to break the tie.
Tinker Owens and Ahmed Kabba, WRs
Feels like I can do better than Kabba. Juaquin Iglesias? JaJuan Penny? Am I missing someone obvious? Until I figure out who I'm missing, I'll stay with Kabba.
Joe Jon Finley, TE
Barely gets the nod over Forrest Valora.
Plato Andros and Tom Tallchief, Gs
I can't say for sure Tallchief was a guard. Ah, let's make him a guard.
Stockar McDougle and Phil Loadholt, Ts
Big Phil the most aptly-named player of the Stoops Era.
Bubba Burcham, C
Burcham was the most aptly-named player of the Stoops Era, until Loadholt came along.
Jimbo Elrod and C.J. Ah You, DEs
Jimbo Elrod one of the great names in modern college football. Dude could play a little, too.
Myrle Greathouse and Dusty Dvoracek, DTs
Dvoracek was always underrated alongside Tommie Harris, with an underrated name.
Aubrey Beavers, Sherdeill Breathett and Harry Hettmannsperger, LBs
Don't know what exactly Hettmannsperger did to earn his letter in 1966, but what a time capsule name.
Chijioke Onyenegecha and Basil Banks, CBs
One elegantly elongated, the other splendidly simplistic.
Jim Rockford and Ontei Jones, Ss
A pity Switzer couldn't sign a Joe Mannix to pair with Rockford in the early 80s.
Uwe von Schamann, K
Easiest call on the board.
Joe Don Looney, P
Couldn't put him in the backfield and bump off Peacock or Rhymes. Given that Joe Don led the nation in punting, this will do fine.
Dewey "Snorter" Luster, head coach
As if there was any question.
