Pro Golf Is for the Birds

Let's get one thing straight about professional golf: The tour outside the four major tournaments is a joke.

Professional golf outside the four majors is barely even a sport. It's a game for the rich and elite, the spoiled and the punkish. It's a country club endeavor that can be mastered by anybody with a childhood blessed by luxury. Who couldn't hit a thousand golf balls a day from age five to age 15 and not be good at the game.

Take a good look at the next gallery or field at a pro golf event. And try to find a member of a minority. The ring around the 18th green is a place to show off face-lifts.

There's little risk of injury. The announcers act like the pro game actually means something in the scheme of things. The British announcers act like they invented the game. Oh, they did? That explains why we'd rather play some pool than watch the Greater Sheboygan Open.

But all this isn't to say that some of pro golf shouldn't be watched and enjoyed on TV. Pro golf is comprised of the four majors, period. The rest is for the groupies. And the majors are great entertainment because of the way the pressure causes all the fortunate ones to choke like spoiled brats.

To paraphrase:

But all this isn't to say that some of college basketballshouldn't be watched and enjoyed on TV. College basketball is comprised of the NCAA tournament, period. The rest is for the groupies.

To each his own but bringing a racial argument and class warfare to a sports discussion is weak sauce, IMO, Picker.

As to risk of injury, perhaps a quick trip to the TW archives on Tiger finishing and winning @ Southern Hills on essentially a broken leg might take the wind out of that argument.

Are you kidding? Did you not watch the Ryder Cup this year? That was no joke, my little picker.

Greatest golfer ever is a minority. Won even with a busted up knee.
You think hitting 1000 balls a day will make one elite? Then shooting 1000 baskets a day will make you LeBron, or kicking 1000 balls a day will make you Lou Groza. Not hardly.
I can go to a bowling alley and beat a pro bowler one game out of a hundred. No one off the street would ever beat a pro golfer. Not even after hitting 1000 balls a day.

Golf at that level is much more about what goes on between the ears than it is simple skill level - which, ironically, is exactly why you don't "get it".

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
