Profound turnaround necessary for OSU

The Oklahoma State football team has arrived at a critical juncture of its season.

This week's Grambling State game essentially is a scrimmage, followed by two weeks of practice in advance of the Oct. 10 Big 12 opener at Texas A&M.

If substantial improvement isn't achieved, there exists the potential for disaster.

What would qualify as a disaster?

Because of the money invested now in Cowboy football, because the preseason expectations were so great, because season-ticket sales are at an unprecedented level and because OSU is blessed with a rare collection of skill-position talent, anything shy of a 10-win season could be categorized as a bust.

Based on what was seen in the Houston and Rice games, it's not difficult to envision a four- or five-loss finish for an OSU team that a few days ago was No. 5 in the country.

The only positive resulting from Saturday's 41-24 win over Rice was that the Cowboys improved to 2-1. Rallying from a 28-3 deficit, the Owls outgained OSU 281 yards to 139 during the second half.

When time expired, a huge red flag should have been raised over Boone Pickens Stadium.

Remember, this offense was hailed by national media as perhaps the best in college football. But through three games (one-quarter of the regular season), here is the OSU report card:

The Cowboys are 49th nationally in rushing, 77th in passing, 69th in total offense, 90th in total defense and 108th in pass defense.

For the second consecutive week, OSU is No. 16 in the Associated Press Top 25. The Cowboys are fortunate that the Rice game was not televised. If AP voters had seen the extent to which OSU flopped during the Rice second half, the Cowboys might have vanished from the poll altogether.

For OSU fans, here's the good news: College football is crazy. Washington, winless last season, just beat Southern Cal. While it won't be easy for Cowboy coaches to squeeze a dramatic and immediate turnaround from their team, it is possible.

OSU still has one advantage over all other teams. OSU has Dez Bryant. Can you imagine this team without Dez Bryant?

Oh Bill, why not just say it's a disappointment if they don't win the mythical national championship.

Sure, they lost their senior defensive quarterback, Orie Lemon, their starting tight end, will have a hobbled starting running back for the rest of the year, and look as though they've sustained injuries to their star receiver and star cornerback, nevermind the lingering effects of a preseason injury to their quarterback...but hey, there should be absolutely no drop off. They should only lose one game the rest of the year, because that's what a few people said before the season started...or it's a 'bust' and Gundy should be fired right away.

By the way, since injuries have no affect on teams, OU should also win the mythical national championship. I mean, they were ranked 3rd preseason weren't they? Anything less and Stoops is a bust. According to your reasoning, both Oklahoma schools are probably going to be busts this year. Let's just fire both coaches now and save ourselves the heartache.

Bill go back and throw out all yards gained against Div II teams (such as OU vs Idaho St) and see where OSU ranks then. If you are going to rank Div I teams then don't use stats gained against Div II teams.

Certainly premature. Guess this helps sell Newspapers. The Cowboys are off track but give'em the Grambling game and a week off to get their footing. I think the defense if pretty well maligned...no one seems to consider the caliber of the offenses it has player against. Georgia was held in check, Houston has a super offense, a hot quarterback, and got a lot of breaks. Rice was a tune-up game...lots of subs. Grambling will also be a tune-up game but I hope they do not take the game to lightly and run up the score a little bit before bringing in other players. My biggest concern is the offense not moving the ball well on the ground. We will see how good the Sooners are once they play and beat a good team. Other than UTAH they have not been tested.
