Q and A
Published: 4/13/2010 3:13 PM

Here are the most-asked questions of the day.

Q: What's up with the Tulsa Driller baseball team?

A: This team needs to figure out a way to win a few games, and fast, or it will have to hang a curtain to obscure the depressing empty seats. After all, a ball part is only as good as its team.

Q: What's up with TU basketball?

A: Many of you undoubtably read Eric Bailey's fine article about The Situation. The Situation is that despite the fact that TU basketball team has done absolutely nothing in recent, or semi-recent memory, the athletic director thinks the coach has done a terrific job. Perhaps asking the person who hired another is not the one to ask in sporting situations. It feels like TU fans are getting to rumble.

Q: What's up with OU basketball?

A: The program is in ruin, it's enough to make an OU fan switch to Burger King.

Q: What's up with OSU football?

A: Maybe you can read between the lines of scrimmage and infer that Coach Pickens is not entirely thrilled with Assistant Head Coach Gundy, in that the change of offenses from Normal to Wacky seemed to come from a jet plane. Very odd to switch to the spread now that the spread is dead. The spread is this decade's version of the wishbone. How many spread quarterbacks make it to the NFL? How many linemen who can't run block?

All three spring games are this weekend, for what that's worth.

Q: What's up with OU football?

A: More of the same.

Q: What's up with TU football?

A: In the interest of community harmony, we will reserve an opinion here until a later date.

Q: What's up with those absurd golfers?

A: They have come to resemble stock cars with all the advertising. Time was, a hat with a logo, a shirt with something over the pocket, that was it. At the Masters, some of the characters seemed to be selling different portions of their shirt collars to various advertisers. One guy's outfit was adorned with approximately ten commercial messages.

Q: What's up with the Thunder?

A: It didn't hit a wall. It hit quicksand. Virtually overnight this team quit playing defense. Durant is brilliant the first three quarters, tired, late. The team doesn't have much inside and needs a lot of help under the basket before it can dream about winning a first-round playoff series. The good news is the Lakers are old and wobbly. Even the first round playoffs are now seven-games, guaranteeing OKC at least two at home. The Thunder is a major success story. The yahoos down the pike, make that patrons, should be very proud. But it's some muscle, and a gunner guard, away from the next step.

Q: What's up with the Shock?

A: The Sporsmanship Trophy.

Look! The Picker has become like Echsbach, Traber and crew - thinking he knows something about the NBA.

Silly Picker, stick to gambling on the local horse races.

There have been many QBs recently drafted that ran the spread in college and there will be many more. In fact, isn't Sam Bradford likely to be the 1st pick this year? Last I checked, OU ran the spread.

Instead of pretending that crystal ball you bought at Toys R Us actually works, how about you wait and see how effective the offense for OSU actually is. No doubt there will be growing pains in this first year. But I guarantee it won't be the failure that you are already claiming it will be.

It is amazing a TW writer knows more about OSUs
football players and what formations to run than coach Gundy.
Everybody knows it's all of us football fans that know more than the coach.

OKC does have a gunner guard.... Too bad he plays PG & he can't shoot....

The starting 2 guard called Thabo, can't shoot either.... The 2 guard who can shoot doesn't get enough playing time(James Harden)....

The PG who can play his position by setting up his teammates first & controlling the tempo(Eric Maynor) is in the same position as the 2 guard who can shoot....

Now we get to SERGE IBAKA !!!! All Serge does is produce & intimidate, he blocks shots, gets rebounds, scores, runs the court like a giant horse, plays defense & he doesn't foul.... But there he is, sitting & watching beside Eric Maynor & James Harden....

The OKC coach must be getting coaching tips from Bob Stoops & Kevin Wilson.... "It don't matter how good & talented they are, they aren't ready, stick with the guys who were here before them, it's safer that way...."

KD isn't tired in the 4th qtr, it's that PG who shoots the ball after 4 seconds have elapsed on the shot clock & the whole team has to then turn & play defense on a fast break then turn around & repeat time & time again.... KD is not tired, he's po'd & frustrated because he can't touch the ball....

How do you take the ball out of KD & Jeff Green's hands, allow Russell Westbrook early success by playing matador defense & then he'll shoot 20% frequently for the rest of the game.... That's what Chauncey Billups did & the Trailblazers copied that formula.... ZERO (0) assists for RW against the Trailblazers on Sunday night....

The last 2 years I have been calling for Coach Wojcik to be fired. But after ready the latest articles in the TW I have changed my mind. Bubba is the one that needs to be fired if he is remotely happy with the current state of TU basketball. Winning 20 plus games means absolutely nothing when they come against bottom tiered teams in “BSC” conference. We couldn’t even make the conference tournament final, which was played in our own backyard, in the “year we have been waiting for”!

Art, it does make a person wonder what the AD has been looking at.

Buster, concerning the make-over, name one reason why a great runner would now go to OSU. Not to run, that's for sure. PS: Houston, on which the offense was based, more or less stinks.

Tulsaninthe woods, interesting hoop thoughts....Durant's numbers early and late raise lots of questions. A guard who can make shots, I meant. What causes a team to stop playing good defense? Good question.

What causes a team to stop playing good defense....

Allowing the other team more shots, not running your offense & shooting quickly on a drive to the basket which allows the man your guarding to break loose for a fast break off your miss.... A PG guards the other PG & when a PG drives & misses, the other team rebounds, outlet passes & then your 2 guard has to cover his man & the other teams PG while your PG who missed the shot trails behind the play....

If you shoot 4-15 (as RW so often does) this creates numerous fast break opportunities for the other team.... Then throw in the fact that RW is a turnover machine at crucial moments in a game....

Before the All-star break RW played OKC basketball, after the Allstar game in Dallas where RW scored 40 points in the rookie\soph game & became touted as a future all-star himself, Russell Westbrook changed his game....

Hopefully he'll settle down & if he doesn't, he'll be great trade bait....

"PS: Houston, on which the offense was based, more or less stinks."

Wow. How laughable is this comment? Let's see here, Houston's offense was top 3 in the nation last year. Their defense stunk. OSU didn't hire their defensive coordinator--they hired the offensive coordinator. Keep up, Pick.

We have the youngest scoring champ in NBA history and leave it to the cynical Tulsans to nit pick at Kevin Durant, he is barely old enough to buy beer and leads the best basketball league in the world in scoring. Any of you 'experts' who thought they'd win 50 games please raise your hand...

What's up with TU football?
More of the same. Once again, TU football will be lucky to be .500 this season.

What's up with the Thunder?
This is still a very young that is still learning how to win consistently. Their big issue this season has been turnovers. They do need to add a few more players, including a scoring center like Tim Duncan and a shooter like Ray Allen.
