Sophomores Johnny Deaton and Clint Chelf are competing for Oklahoma State’s backup quarterback job.
Following Friday’s spring-practice session, this hypothetical was presented to offensive coordinator Todd Monken: If starter Brandon Weeden had a leg cramp and couldn’t play for a series, which backup QB would take snaps with the first unit?
“(Running back) Joseph Randle,” Monken replied. “We’d run the Wildcat. We’d run the Wildcat, baby. We’d have (Justin) Blackmon as the fly back and we’d be rolling.”
Monken then provided some actual insight: “Clint right now would be ahead of Johnny. Clint has played the most. His biggest thing is processing. Johnny Deaton processes things fast, but half the time throws it to the wrong team.
“If we could get Johnny to quit throwing it to the wrong team and Clint to process faster, I think we’ll have a couple of good players.”
Chelf and Deaton have an opportunity to impress Monken on Wednesday, when the Cowboys are scheduled for their first major scrimmage of the spring period. First-year freshman J.W. Walsh, almost certainly destined for a redshirt season, may get a few snaps. The scrimmage is closed to the public. The Orange-White spring game is set for April 16.
Program insiders rave about Deaton's commitment to the offseason program. Chelf's progress is evident when you watch him pass the football. Relative to where he was a year ago, he may be the most improved player on the roster.
