Question of the Year
Published: 4/14/2008 5:13 PM
Last Modified: 4/14/2008 5:13 PM

Say the quarterback on your beloved college team has a tremendous amount of poise in the huddle.

Say he has a remarkably accurate arm.

Say his arm is plenty strong enough.

Say that he is a high-quality individual.

Say he got knocked out of a game against a real dog, and say that his team lost that one on the road.

Say that he lost another one to another dog of a team on the road.

Say that in a bowl, he had something of an uncertain look to him in a contest in which his team was routed.

Say that in the spring game, he was intercepted more than you might have thought.

The question: Can a quarterback without considerable speed and/or quickness -- not to run the option, but to dash away from trouble -- compete for a national championship?

Answer: NO WAY!

Luckily Heupel wasn't fast or quick either. And we still got a championship. But hey, if your quarterback can run (D. Woods, B. Reid, and whoever the latest Poke QB is), maybe 5-7 wins is all you need to be happy. Anywyay...BOOMER SOONER!!!

Was Matt Leinart a Steve Young back there? Craig Krenzel? Ken Dorsey?

Wasn't it you, dear Picker, who used to lambast "gazelles?" Plenty of national champion QBs weren't runners. Plenty more "competed" for a national championship, like Jason White. Come on now . . .

that was low even for you picker. that freshman year was completely unexpected & successful. have you been on the turf at lubbock, better yet been to lubbock? freaky things happen when 600 lbs of players come crashing on your head & bouncing it around on concrete.

good decision making & leadership are some of those intangibles that arent measured in the 40 or by how far you can run. By the way the defense is what you have been ragging on for months, why switch gears?

Good job Thomas, way to bring OSU into the article. If OU fan's don't think OSU is a rival, then you guys sure have a funny way of showing it.

Bradford has plenty of talent and has enough talent around him to compete for and win a national championship. The question is will the coaches have the team ready? Now, i love Bob Stoops and think he's a heck of a coach but the play in true road games last year was dismal! Colorado? Loss. Texas Tech? Loss. Iowa State? Nail biter until the end against the worst team in the Big 12. The did better at neutral sites by beating Texas (only by seven) and Missouri, but then got beat down by West Virgina. OU's defense forgets how to play away from Norman. This year they have three true road games that MAY cause them problems. At Washington, at Texas A&M and at OSU. I think they will roll Washington, but playing at Kyle Field is never easy and OSU keeps the Bedlam Games close in Stillwater. Sam Bradford is a great athlete and will have another great year, but he can't be on the field for every play!

I'll admit beforehand that I am an OSU fan but I grew up completely impartial. I only picked a school because OSU had a better program for what I wanted to study. I'm not really impartial but I'll try.

Sam Bradford is a great QB, but the question still lingers as to whether or not he can really step up and win when the pressure is on against a quality opponent. He doesn't make the team but, as as evident against Tech, OU struggles without him at best. Iowa State does not count. In Mizzou part 1 he had the crowd in Norman, which isn't the greatest home field advantage but still high quality. Mizzou part 2 wasn't really much of a contest, there's not much pressure when your defense makes a Heisman candidate look foolish.

The point about quickness is that it can help take the pressure of the mental mistakes with the arm. If you don't think so, Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart would probably contend otherwise. If a quarterback feels pressure and doesn't see a good throw he can probably break for who knows how many yards if he has the legs like Vince Young.

The question still lingers about Bradford. He's still young. It would take poise rarely seen in a sophomore for him to handle a close national championship. It would take a blowout, which I don't see happening especially if Georgia goes. They proved in their bowl game that they are scary and any quarterback could soil themselves thinking about that line.

My guess: probably won't happen this year but he's still got two years of eligibility left and has to play at least one of them. He could easily be ready for the challenge then.

Let's just get it out of the way right now: OU isn't winning a national championship this year. And once again, instead of ripping the overhyped athletes on OU's defense and offensive line, the Picker will instead choose to rip on Sam Bradford, a native Oklahoman that has done nothing but represent his state with dignity and class thus far.
Epphan (5 years ago)
Quickness is certainly going to be a limiting factor this year. But the problem in CORNERback not QUARTERback.

If you're going to try to win a championship 45-42 you've got bigger problems than how fast your QB is.
Jason (5 years ago)
Considering that Sam was not the one giving up 50 yard runs to a fullback with 5.2 40 and big play after big play, and that he also was not the one calling the halfback dive with a 17 point lead at CU, I find it hard to hold him accountable for the losses...

But the Picker has never been one to let facts get into the way of some good pot stirring...
bla (5 years ago)
To Matthew who thought that the Picker is ripping on Sam Bradford the person...he is not, actually he is not ripping on him at all just making a commentary that while he may be good and performed at a fairly high level last season, the deficiencies and lack of experience/maturity in big game moments may catch up to him against really solid teams. All of last year I felt Bradford would struggle when forced to move on to his 2nd and 3rd targets as I did not get the sense he understood how to read a defense and react accordingly. To be fair, OU's success on offense isn't predicated on Bradford having to make the calls and adjust. If OU is to contend for a National Championship it will be defense and the ability of the RB's that will get them there.

Matt Lienart won a couple national championship (according to the AP), and he couldn't run worth a crap.

He just had a really good offensive line and some good running backs, both of which OU has. Along with good receivers. OU's offense will not be the problem this year.

The secondary's not as good as it looked in the spring game, or at least i wont believe it till i see it against Texas or Tech or OSU. The linebackers may also have issues. The front four will be good, but that's only good if the other team's QB isn't too good a runner.
Arthur (5 years ago)
Wow, most of you missed that point completely. It is NOT that he isn't a good quarterback with the potential to win a championship. Here's a quick observation from football 101. You can gripe all you want about the defense from last year's bowl, but the offense needs to stay on the field longer otherwise the defense just gets destroyed. Hmm, playing longer makes you more tired. The question is without him being able to rely on his legs when he gets that dazed and confused feeling, like Vince Young, can he lead his team to a championship?
Marc V (5 years ago)
Uh, no National Championship. Not running the new offense with the same QB.
Jeff (5 years ago)
There may be something wrong with my monitor, but I think the question was, "compete?"

Answer: Yes. Absolutely.

Picker didn't ask if they'd WIN it. The obvious answer to that question is, No. But one would have the same answer no matter which team you asked the question of. That's just too hard to do.

Since the readers mentioned OU, that does bring up a legit question or two concerning what could be a trend in the overall philosophy.

Remember when Switz had rockets at every position? The t-shirts that said HELLO on the front and GOODBYE on the back? Well, sometimes now it's like HELLO on the front and I'M STILL HERE on the back.

Is the philosophy Sumo over speed?

Where is the speed merchant at wide receiver? The linemen pulling more than a gut? A lightning-quick corner?

Just wondering.

Didn't Heupel have very quick feet? Also the USC qb?
Jeff (5 years ago)
Picker,

Don't, even for a second, pretend you weren't talking about Sam Bradford and OU. Other than him, to whom is it you are referring?

world picker (5 years ago)
It was just sporting life in general, Jeff.

But the alleged OU switch to mass over movement is interesting, isn't it.

Here's one very specific OU situation that could stand analysis and comment: the near-complete collapse of the baseball program.

Swung and missed the tournament last year! Looks about the same this year. Great hire or foul?
John (5 years ago)
Absolutely......his team was in the hunt when he was a freshman.....

I would say that many of the teams that have won championships previous did not have "fast" qb's....ala Flynn, Leinart, Heupel, and Jason White to me is comparable to Bradford's speed and he competed for a championship two years n a row....
world picker (5 years ago)
The Jason White comparison seems apt.

That player could certainly take a hit; and did.
JJ (5 years ago)
Yes, picker the Sunny Galloway hire was a complete joke. Most people around the ORU team... fans, parents, staff etc would have told you that.
JJ (5 years ago)
Bradford is actually probably a little more like a Krentzl, or that LSU dude.. not Flynn the one that OU played in the Suagr bowl....
JJ (5 years ago)
the dentist... who played baseball first
