Raise or Fire?
Published: 1/28/2008 5:43 PM

Lots of fans don't know exactly what they should think about their coaches.

Put him on notice that more wins are required?

Give him one more year, no questions asked?

Fire him?

Raise him?

How much is enough time?

There is one true test that will help determine how a coach is doing.

Ask yourself this: If your particular coach were to be fired, would a school similar to yours hire him?

If yes, keep the coach.

If no, get yourself a new one.

Pretty straight forward. Fire Sutton!

If the same logic had been used when he was hired we would not be here asking the question today. Somebody remind me why he was hired. Oh yeah, irrational idol worship of his daddy.
OSUNDN (5 years ago)
I don't know that any one coach needs to be put on notice that more wins are required. That should have been a stipulation during the hiring process. I also believe that the length of the contract should be honored by both parties involved. (see Bill Self and Jerry Jones)

I understand his dad was an amazing coach and he has learned alot from that. I prefer the path his brother Scott is taking by coaching a college in a smaller conference who has already been to the NCAA's 2 more times than Sean and has beaten Kansas. Yet i agree with OSUDN we should honor the contract and see what he can do with these guys. Oh and if history is correct I read about a coach at a southern college with an amazing tradition who was hired and went 32-50 in his first 3 years. Since then he has won 3 national titles made numerous title games and has right now 793 wins. His name is Coach K at Duke. Give Sutton some more time!

Think anybody else would hire Sean right now?

The process of hiring one of your own, a grad, is risky. Why would a person have to be one of their own to be given a shot to be successful? See John Blake.

If anything, it's too much pressure.

But even the Stoops Formula is not guaranteed -- hiring the best assistant around. Look at Mike Stoops messing up Arizona.

Still, a great outsider is a much less pressurized situation than an unproven favored grad.

Getting on to the OSU season-ticket-or-bust hustle: It will either work beautifully and sell lots of season tickets. Or it won't work and there will be 10,000 empty seats for Bedlam.

Big gamble.

World Picker:

I am certain someone would hire Sean Sutton now. There is absolutely no chance he is totally 'unhirable' as you suggest. Of course, finding someone to take over his job, well, that's quite another story, isn't it.

You have been somewhat quiet since the OSU women's team has lost 4 straight, and OSU has crumbled, and OU women's team beat Baylor and the OU men beat OSU. Proves that I have been right all along.

It can't be a coincidence that your column shrinks by about 50% when you don't bash OU.

Yep, I was right all along. You are a fan bigot with minimal talent, little knowlege of sports and less objectivity.

You should be fired.

OSUNDN: You say you want the length of an employment contract to be 'honored' by both parties. If that were made a part of the contract, wouldn't it make the coach an indentured servant? Isn't that illegal, even in Stillwater?

steve (5 years ago)
mike stoops messing up arizona? um, remind me how much better arizon was before he was there than now that he's there. i'm pretty sure they were something like 2-10 before him, for the past 2 years he's made them 6-6 and 5-7. granted, he's not a great coach, but he's an improvement over what they had by a long shot, so he didn't mess up arizona; there was nothing to mess up.
OSUNDN (5 years ago)
NITWITTER, How can one be an indentured servant if both parties of the contract agree on a monetary payment? Now, I know in Norman, OK, the OU players enter into a contract and get paid without working, but aren't most indentured servants bound by contract to work without pay? Do us a favor NITWIT, know what you're talking about before you post. Pickers' column doesn't shrink by 50% when he doesn't bash OU. It does increase 50% when he does because it hurts your feelings and you have to get on here to let everyone know. Your not very smart are you?
SCTrojan (5 years ago)
STEVE you are partly right. Stoops didnt get an amazing team who had been 2-10 and 4-8 the two seasons before he got there. The Cats had been averaging 4 wins for a bit and last winning season was in 1999 when they won 6 but that came after their 1998 year when they were 12-1! The thing is Stoops first two years were 3-8 then he has had some improvement but with his recruiting classes which have been very good he hasnt done much. I think the only thing that keeps his job is that every year his teams seem to knock off a high ranking Pac-10 team. They have beaten UCLA and AZ St when they come in ranked high but I think this is the last year for Mike. Unless he gets them to a bowl game. He is a good coach and you are right Steve he didnt have much to work with. I don't think AZ will be good in the near future so he should go back to OU if he gets the chance. I remember his defenses were amazing there. Let me know what you think Steve.

OSUNDN: If you force someone to work for you, then they are an indentured servant, even in Norman.

"Honor" and "coaches contracts" in the same sentence? It is obvious that you believe in the tooth fairy, the goodness of mankind and the objectivity of World Picker.
Wanna buy a bridge in Brooklyn?

You need to change your underwear, it seems to be in a wad. You can call World Picker to come help you. (Oops, the image may have blunted the sting of that one.)

World Picker's column is full of hate, obsessed with sarcastic OU bashing, and not much more. That is why you love him so much. Are you two going steady?

Obviously, neither of you can handle someone standing up to your infantile, high school type put downs.

OU bashing doesn't hurt my feelings. OU is World Picker's obsession and your obsession, not mine.

But, your reactions make it clear you and World Picker can dish it out but you can't take it.

And I have been right all along.

But I digress. Who's your pick for the Super Bowl? Jaguars or Green Bay?

"There is one true test that will help determine how a coach is doing.

This has to be one of the best sitting-around-a-beer sports questions I've heard in some time.

JWW: Where you been all this time?

TU people: What about that great moral victory versus Memphis now?
John (5 years ago)
I just happened to notice that the nitpicker said, "OSU's women team has lost 4 straight... and OU's women team beat Baylor." Both of which are false. I know this is just a simple mistake, but if the worldpicker had made such a mistake, and nitpicker caught it, there would be absolute hell to pay. But I being a rational sane person will let it go. I won't even say the nitpicker should be fired. Though, I do think his mother should kick him out of the basement.

Picker: So sorry to disappoint. I have been busy firing up my smoker for ribs + work obilgations. Snow? Bah! It'll be 60 come Sunday. Invite still open. I'm more a NFL guy than college, but racking my brain to come up with up an example of a college coach fired from one school who had success at another school. There has to be one out there, but I am drawing a blank. Help!
WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
JWW, that's the whole point: there are very few bad firings. The only ones who don't want coaches fired are media homers.

Given a reasonable chance, fired coaches almost always wind up at lesser joints, remember the guy at Nebaska, oh, you can't fire him! Solich? He's down several levels. All those Notre Dame hacks, same with basketball.

They don't win, get them out of here, just see if anybody good as your school scoops them up.

JWM: Ron Zook got fired from Florida and seems to have turned Illinois around, but thats the only one i can think off.
Nit Picker (5 years ago)
Dear John:

Sorry, but it is no mistake. OSU lost. OU won. World Picker gets lockjaw. I can see it even from way down here in the basement. Brrrr! My mom never comes down here; but yours drops by now and then.

Shrouded Llama :

I agree, Zook has done well. It may be too soon to make a call on Coker. He may still be collecting big bucks from Florida.

World Picker:

OSU season ticket/bedlam hustle:

It will work because the 10,000 season tickets will be purchased by OU fans just to get a bedlam ticket. The other game tickets in the season ticket package will be used to wipe...er - well, has anyone seen the home game schedule for OSU next season?
