Randle on the quest for 13-0: ‘That’s the plan’

Because he is as eloquent as he is talented, Joseph Randle is among the more impressive figures in the Oklahoma State football program.

When interviewed by media members, most college players range from somewhat nervous to somewhat comfortable. Randle is only 19 years old, but he is exceedingly comfortable in front of cameras. He makes eye contact with reporters. He is concise and provides punchy quotes.

When it was mentioned that Randle is close to becoming only the 14th Cowboy to rush for 1,000 yards in a single season, he said, “It definitely would be an honor, but that’s an individual thing. I don’t worry about those too much. We don’t have any national championships around here.

“There were 13 guys who had 1,000 yards, but there’s been no national championship. That would be more important to me.”

And when it was mentioned that the third-ranked Cowboys are 8-0 for the first time since 1945 and 5-0 in conference play for the first time ever, Randle said, “We’re not 13-0 yet. That’s the plan for us. Our plan is to be undefeated at the end of the year.”

Randle followed a four-touchdown performance at Missouri with a four-touchdown performance against Baylor. With 102 points, he leads the Big 12 in scoring and ranks fourth nationally. The sophomore from Wichita, Kan., has rushed for 842 yards, averaging 6.2 per attempt.

Oklahoma State changed its offensive culture when it converted to a spread passing attack, but Randle and his extremely effective sophomore backup, Jeremy Smith, are succeeding at sustaining OSU’s “Tailback U” identity.
