OU lovers are on the verge of frittering away one of the greatest moments in fandom: putting one over on your No. 1 rival.

OU just hit the college football lottery: up popped a big red lucky number.

The Sooners went all in and drew an inside straight.

This should be a time of great joy and hilarity. There should be singing in the pubs, upgrades and days off in the classrooms.

Airplanes from OU should fly over Austin with 45-35 flying behind, with this sub-head: Good bowl luck against Ball State.

Life is too full of lousy luck, layoffs and bear markets.

Any high stakes game where one team is a solid favorite is scary for the favorite. The dog has nothing to lose and everything to gain. For MU, it's BCS or bust (Alamo??). As a fan, I'm always more concerned with how my team plays than what the other team can do. OU's concerns are: Bradford's thumb, the new MLB, covering a kickoff, Bradford's thumb, the weather, and Bradford's thumb. I like prediction, but I'll say Sooners by 21 (they cover).

If the Sooners beat Mizzou, concerns before the big game include: the BCS monkey on the back, distractions from assistants leaving/interviewing, Bama or Florida. I can't remember a postseason when OU hasn't had to deal with a coach leaving or being courted. It speaks volumes about the staff that Stoops continues to put together year in and year out. And by the way...I agree with you article that any sane Sooner fan would simply say, "screw you Texas, we are going to KC so deal with it".

Dear Mr. Cronley:

You seem to be one of very few local journalists with any objectivity when it comes to local sports teams, so I am submitting these comments to you in the hope they might be read and might be something you would consider.

As an OU alum and big fan, I am very happy for OU. But someone, maybe President Boren, needs to encourage Coach Stoops to be a bit more diplomatic in public comments. OU gets bashed in the national press (e.g., being accused of running up the score) mainly because many don't like the "face" of our team, the head coach. For example, instead of essentially saying "those were the rules, Texas, so tough!" ... it would've been easy to sound gracious in victory ... something as simple as "Texas has an outstanding team, and we can understand their disappointment, but we're proud of what we've accomplished and think we've earned our way into the championship game." A little diplomacy and an occasional smile from the head coach could go a long way toward silencing the critics, and in the end it would serve OU's interests a lot better.

Dear Onereader:

You obviously missed my press conference where I said all three teams had a good argument for being chosen to go to Kansas City.

You also missed all of my lobbying, whining and complaining prior to the Big 12 Championship Game, as well as my appearance during the Texas/Texas A&M game... because I refused to do any of it.

Here is what I missed:
Anyone on ESPN, ABC or connected with Longhorn football, mentioning the fact that neither the OU coaches nor the OU players had anything to do with the tie breaking proceedure, much less congratulating us on a good season.

I also missed Mack Brown's motion to change the tie breaking system at the last 12 meetings of the Big 12 Conference...because he voted for it.

I also missed the rule that said OU had to schedule the same non-conference cream puffs as Texas did.

I did see Sam Bradford tell you and others of your ilk that your disrespect and whining was a huge motivator.
Please continue it.
Thanks.
Bob Stoops
