Recruiting Yawn

Half the big-shot recruits won't be able to play a lick.
Half of them will flunk out.
Half of those will wander off.
How many does that leave worth agonizing over, a couple?
Two positions are worth recruiting stories: quarterback and corner back.
And not just any type of quarterback. Run-pass quarterbacks are not worth their stars. Drop back passers are the key to the BCS. And teams with the best corners have the best defenses.
As for the rest of the positions, coach up the two-star recruits.
It's all about pro-style throwers and pass defenders.

Vince Young, Chris Leak, Tim Tebow-yeah, national champion quarterbacks are all pro style, drop-back passers. What games do you watch?
World Picker

Where is Vince Young today?
Where is Chris Leak today?
In case you were out of town, Tim Tebow ran for about six inches versus OU, he beat Alabama and the Sooners with the pass.
You option guys, go Air Foce.

I'm sorry, I thought you were commenting about COLLEGE recruiting. Your ability to change the subject when you are wrong is both legendary and unsurpassed.

Tebow ran for six inches? Then who was that guy who was gutting the Sooner defense right up the middle in the third and fourth quarter? While Tebow may become a second string fullback in the NFL, the FACT remains that he rushed for 109 yards against Oklahoma.
a rational homer

Tebow ran for 109 yards against OU, and averaged 5 yards a carry. So, not bad - you were only off by somewhere around four thousand inches.
Actually not bad for you! By the way, OU's total rushing for the game was 107 yards. But they did have the magical 'drop-back' passer........

The picker is getting PWNED on this article.

No wonder newspapers are losing money-they are paying people to comment on games that they do not WATCH.

3 halves?? Hmm...

I agree with you, Mr. Picker, on the quarterbacks and corner backs. Back in the 1960's and 1970's, the key was great running backs and good run stoppers. However, nowadays, it's about quarterbacks that can pass the ball well and guys that can defend the pass well. I would add offensive linemen to the list. Without a good offensive line, you don't have a good passing game nor a good running game.

Question...why do the comments on the blogs go in reverse chronological order while the comments on the articles are the opposite? Just curious.
Plus, you're wrong Picker. Run-first QB's with average arms don't work in the pros because defenses are too fast and can contain them and cover receivers better. They work great in college because defenses are spread thin and are vulnerable in places allowing fast QB's to run wild or allow an average arm QB to complete a pass. Vince Young is a perfect example. Unstoppable in college, containable in the NFL. Your original blog says that pass first QB's are necessary in college, which isn't true.

Actually, Florida proves Picker's point. Tebow didn't win that game, the DBs did. And, conversely, the opposing DBs lost the game.

"And not just any type of quarterback. Run-pass quarterbacks are not worth their stars. Drop back passers are the key to the BCS." The picker is reaching as always: as Mike mentioned, 3 of the last 4 BCS National Champions were led by run-pass QB's. Geez picker, it's one thing for you to attempt to "rile-up" your readers, but it's quite another to be dead wrong, time and time again. Continue reaching.

Throw in few good lineman, both offense and defense and I'm with you.
Oh, and a drop back passer that doesn't move in the pocket like the kitchen refrigerator.

As an OU fan, my heart sank when I found out their opponent would be Florida because I knew we were in trouble with Tebow. Look, he passed for less yards in the game than most of our opponents in '08, but he killed us with his legs. OU 'fans' that pretend otherwise are stupid or bitter - or both. Bradford will be the better pro, but to pretend run/pass qbs in college are 'yawners' is typical of a lot of OU fans who think OU sets the trend and standard for everyone. Wouldn't trade Bradford for ANYONE, but dont' be morons. We are slowly building years of evidence that not only CAN they win championships but are preferred....

People who think running quarterbacks have a major place in big-time college football are responsible for things like the Picker hitting 14 of 15 games against the point spread.
Keep it up kids.
Hey Mike, who's your favorite team, Rice?
Drop-back quaterbacks have won more national championships over option characters by about, oh, 10-1. You there Mike?

Holy Shnikes, is the Picker even writing this blog anymore?? He has been uncharacteristically wrong for the last couple weeks! And yes, usually his points can be debated. But this isn't even close!
Who cares where Vince Young and Chris Leak are today! Your quote was "key to the BCS." How about Eric Crouch for another?! Michael Vick?? The point is that they dominated in college (you know, the BCS) WITH THEIR FEET! Tebow had nothing to do with that win? That's funny because I remember very pivitol points in the game where he ran for 1st downs on 3rd and long situations! Those are the momentum killers that doomed OU...not the CBs.
Also, good CBs are important but there is NO WAY that they are more important than great D-Linemen. If you can't get to the QB with a 4 man rush, it doesn't matter how great your CBs are, the receivers are eventually going to get open.
This is getting embarrassing for you, Picker. Making points that have nothing to do with the debate (Young and Leak's careers now), stating horribly false statistics to try to back up your point (Tebow running for "six inches" when he ran for over 100 yards)...wow.
Hey, at least you hit 14 of your 15 point spreads. Hold onto that puppy for as long as you can. Haha, you sound like some fifty year old who still wears his Div. 2 High School Championship ring and letterman jacket. Keep living the dream!

Hey Mike, who has won the most national championships, quarterbacks who can throw, or those little option rascals?
Case closed, you lose.
MIKE
Wow Picker, your arguments get more and more ridiculous by the second. First of all, not all national championships are won by QBs...ask OU. Some by RBs, some by defense...some even by special teams.
Second, are we talking about National championships 20 years ago when QBs NEVER even ran the ball? Wow, talk about a skewed statistic. Hey, how about we go back 50 years before the forward pass was even in play while we are at it? How many QBs won those national championships by being pocket passers?
The point is that we are talking about college football today--in recent years. Should I go slower for you? I'm fairly sure everyone has already given you enough examples of running QBs in recent years whom have won BCS games because of their mobility. Just admit you are wrong and we'll all move on and only laugh at you when you aren't around.
With that being said, I'd love to say that you lose but everyone already knows you were never even allowed on the field.
Embarassed for the picker
I guess we will just ignore recent history and only look back at what happened, say, 30 years ago so we will agree with him. lol...he argues like kids. I can see him holding his hands over his ears and screaming '30 years ago! 30 years ago!'
Amazed by the logic
Um...hasn't OU actually won more championships with mobile/running QBs? So, according to picker's logic, OU should immediately go back to the option......I hope he's being moronic on purpose just to play us to make comments, and he's not really as stupid as he's come across on this post.
