Regarding Matt Groening Request: D'oh!
Published: 1/3/2008 1:28 PM

I got a chance to cover Oral Roberts the other day because I was following the Suttons all over Utah. They were easy to spot, as they were among the few folks in Utah without blond hair.
In ORU's game notes for the media, it is stated that "Simpsons" creator Matt Groening once attended the school at 81st and Lewis. (Ned Flanders, a character on the show, has an ORU diploma on his wall.)
So, I wondered if Groening is fired up about ORU's resurgence in basketball. Maybe he watches ESPN's crawler to check on Golden Eagle scores. Maybe he threw a big watch party when Ken Tutt and Caleb Green led the hoops squad to NCAA Tournament appearances the last two seasons. Or maybe not.
We'll never know unless we ask, so I did. I sent an e-mail requesting a Groening interview to his lawyer, who forwarded it to his publicity folks. I got a phone call from one of Groening's reps today and the interview request was politely declined for a couple of reasons.
1, Groening is doing zero interviews during the writer's strike.
2, Groening, according to the rep, has almost zero interest in sports, which would kibosh the whole idea for doing the interview anyway.
I thanked them for being kind enough to consider the request, although I was looking forward to asking the man who created Homer Simpson if he was an ORU homer.

too bad, it may have made an interesting article, esp. since he has "no interest in sports" he may have had some other insights in light of the school's "problems".

Doh! that would have been a great find.

I don't understand one thing. How can someone not like sports? I've never heard of such a person, females aside.
