As Memphis continues to search for a basketball coach to replace John Calipari, the quest could turn to former Oklahoma State coach Leonard Hamilton, currently at Florida State.
So says the Memphis Commercial Appeal, which reported Sunday that Baylor coach Scott Drew has withdrawn his name from consideration.
Usually, when a coach withdraws his name from consideration, that means he wants to save face because someone else is going to get the job.
But the Commercial Appeal reported that Drew bailed out on Memphis because the school's brass was moving too slow.
Hamilton, by the way, was OSU's coach prior to Eddie Sutton and was responsible for bringing in players that helped the Cowboys become immediate NCAA Tournament participants under Sutton.
Could Hamilton recruit the kind of talent capable of keeping Memphis on the national map? Absolutely. He got Byron Houston, Richard Dumas, Thomas Jordan and Corey Williams to come to OSU when the rowdiest arena in the country was just a nice little gathering place.
