How did the electronic media get so bad?

It is a national stink.

The worst of it is ESPN junk like the morning show "First and Ten," where people like Skip Bayless predict teams like Dallas to reach the Super Bowl, then come on the air and wallow in hindsight.

It is thought by the electronic media that everybody should have an opinion. No they shouldn't. Stupid and uncreative people do not deserve a public format. ESPN has turned into a never-ending desk of failed coaches and inarticulate former players. They don't provide analysis, it's mindless back-stabbing.

The lousiest of the electronic media sticks together and doesn't know how bad it is -- they can dish it but can't stomach it.

After the two NFL playoff games, radio and TV concerned itself mostly with the bench demeanor of Bear quarterback Jay Cutler. ESPN found a new low by showing vindictive Tweets from players watching at home!

And to think, there was one extremely thoughtful event that happened in the Jet-Steeler game, something that warranted intelligent discussion. Know what it was? You would be one of a select few. It was the fumble-forward pass ruling by horrible Hoculi's crew, just before the half. An apparent pass was ruled to be a fumble. It was the difference in the game.

What is the rule?

If the arm moves forward, isn't it a pass? If the ball moves backward, is that a lateral? A fumble?

Instead of a game-changer or Super Bowl-changer, the incompetents would rather show the Tweets of chumps.

The officiating in the Jet-Steeler game was terrible, helmet-to-helmet hits missed, players pulling up penalized -- Hoculi was the one who stopped the clock to call for a measurement of something like a 4th and two!

Thank heavens the Super Bowl is on Fox. That, and the NFL Channel are about the only outlets worth watching -- the Fox game telecast, not the sappy pre-game show, with the poking and tickling and fake laughter.

What is an incomplete pass?

Minor point, to the hindsight specialists.

Really? You consider Joe Buck an impressive step-up for football coverage?

Yea, he's got a good strong voice but the only guy who thinks his jokes are funny is Buck.
Hedged (2 years ago)
Very true Picker. What ever happened to ESPN? It's become a joke and sinking fast.

I do have to agree with the on air talent during the FOX games vs. ESPN crew.

Baseball#11 (2 years ago)
I agreed on everything but the fumble ruling pick i am pretty sure if you make contact with the quarter back before his arm moves into the forward motion then it isnt ruled a pass however a split second later and yes i do believe it is a incomplete pass but thats just my opinion.... what happened is in the past now lets hope the steelers defense can do the same to Aaron Rogers and the Pack i would really like to see a 7th superbowl win....

"Stupid and uncreative people do not deserve a public format."

Are you paying attention Jason? Maybe this should be written into the terms and conditions.
Dr. Strangelove (2 years ago)
Are you referring to me Ferris? LOL

I agree with Pick. The ESPN hacks were seriously backpeddling today after the clarity of Cutler's injury came out, as well as the comments of his fellow players.

ESPN and other traditional means of sports media are going the way of the DoDo. People demand more than talking heads.

Enter SB Nation. If video killed the radio star, the blog is going to kill the espn/newspaper/local sports talk star. You're gonna have to be really good to survive in this new world.

Two missed helmet to helmet calls were bad but not nearly as stupid as the Bears' third and three end around that stopped them cold. I thought maybe Dave Rader was texting plays to Lovie.

Joe Buck is a pathetic atavism, harkening back to the days of Will Rogers, Jr. The unwatchable Buck coos and moos with his radio dj voice while making idiotic comments rife with moronic "insights". Will Rogers, jr. did his best to make hay off of his dad's name; Joe Buck is doing the same. What's the old expression? Born on third base and thinks he hit a triple...

Good points Picker! Oh & sittler is a weird little creep.
Hedged (2 years ago)
Speaking of weird... How did Holly Rowe get a job in Sports TV? She doesn't add any content to the game and actually appears to be annoying the athletes.
Ignatz (2 years ago)
Hedged & wgs...agreed.
Don's World (2 years ago)
Kenmore, Buck has been telling jokes? Ignatz, and that lousy call came AFTER a time out, that was the best they could come up with? Was a bad call. But that's part of the game.
This whole empty hand, tuck rule is it a pass or fumble stuff is becoming old. Brady's play STILL looks like a fumble after all these years, and yesterday's play looked like a pass. Even though I knew what the ruling would be, as I am aware of way the rules are written, it still just doesn't look right.

As far as the helmet to helmet contact, that is just something that is new that no one is used to yet, not even the officials. I hate seeing the aggression taken away, but I hate worse seeing former NFL players who literally don't know their own names.
D-MANN (2 years ago)
I respectfully disagree with you about the fumble/incomplete pass call. The "empty hand" rule applies in this case. It was very close, but the ball was knocked loose before his hand started forward. Yes, the ball proceeded to move forward, but only because Sanchez' hand (minus the ball)caused it to do so. That being said, I don't know what the heck was up with that crazy measurement.

Uncreative people do not deserve a public format?

Haha, easy there, Pick. You may find yourself without a job.

Let's go through your mass collection of blog topics: "Medium Game Bob," "ESPN sucks," "The BCS is a joke."

Rinse, wash, repeat.

That about sums it up.
traija50 (2 years ago)
shootman and meximickey.... if you don't think the pick man is a creative writer, then you should take a writing course. Something easy like at oswho Tulsa. You wouldn't know a good writer if he stamped his column on your face in black ink. Idiots. Bring it... with some good writing.
MexiMike (2 years ago)
Apparently I offended the Pick's girlfriend, traija50.

Haha, I really doubt anyone who uses terms like "oswho" is the best judge of creativity.

Any other highly educated insults, traija50? Or should we all wait until recess is over for you to gather new material?
traija50 (2 years ago)
Well? Mickey Mouse.
The Picker (2 years ago)
D-MANN: Yeah, empty hand, that's what a lot of them mentioned. It sounds pretty self-explanatory, if the ball is out before the arm moves forward, fumble. If not, pass. But didn't it look like his arm was moving forward before the ball was out?

That WAS the difference in the game.

It wasn't a simple turnover, it was a turnover/TOUCHDOWN.

Here's a mini-update on a subject we brought up last week, the two media-loved mini-guards from this area. OSU's guy was something like 1-7 in threes, last game, our cat Fido and I scored the same as the Arkansas guard versus Florida. Zero.

Maybe traija50 is the Picker's boyfriend....
traija50 (2 years ago)
Mara-Mickey - 1st, your sentence is actually a question, usually followed in the English written language with a question mark. Second, I'm thinking you both should come out. Your lives would be so much easier to live. Be proud!
The Picker (2 years ago)
CincyJoe, hopefully you're more perceptive than most. If only the best survive, what a great time that would be. The obvious problem is, garbage is sometimes fun to watch and hear and read. Buy a product that sponsors people like Bayless? Never. So ratings can be misleading. Numbers no longer translate into dollars. Garbage out, garbage in.
traija50 (2 years ago)
And you Sir, sure do have to put up with a lot of garbage and fruitcakes on these incredibly stupid (for the 90% most part)comments on your column.
traija50 (2 years ago)
and... to address the original subject - I heard Phil Simms refer to offensive players as defense and defensive players referred to offensive at least 3 times (I am not exaggerating). Talk about lousy color. Goodness... and that only begins to tell how many errors he continued to make. I'm faster on my feet than he is and .... that is NO compliment.
dumbokie (2 years ago)
I enjoyed both games, though as usual, many bad calls. Call it human error. It's just sports and most of us will live to cheer and jeer the next game as well.
Don's World (2 years ago)
Meximike and Marathon man, I thought WG had it bad for the pick, but it is nothing compared to the love that dare not speak it's name Traija50 has going on. I wouldn't interfere.
