Ryde(r) ‘em Cowboys?

Scott Verplank bleeds orange and black to the core. The PGA Tour veteran golfer and OSU graduate lists watching OSU football as one of his hobbies. He was co-chairperson of the Next Level capital campaign to fund improvements to Boone Pickens Stadium.

If Verplank weren’t busy this weekend in Ireland playing golf and representing his country at the 36th Ryder Cup matches, he would be watching his alma mater’s football game either in person or on television.

One thing Verplank likely will not be doing, though, is singing the OSU fight song.

Verplank revealed in his Ryder Cup press conference Tuesday that one of the American team's bonding events was singing the fight song of their respective schools. The Edmond resident apparently is much better with his pitching wedge than hitting a high-pitched musical note.

“Oh, man, my singing sucks, I can tell you that right now,” Verplank said to a laughing audience. “It was really embarrassing and it was worse because some of us, including myself, didn't really know all the words. You kind of exposed a few guys that they think they are pretty good fans and they don't even know the words to the fight song at their school.”

Verplank, though, was not the only American Ryder Cup player who struggled to carry a tune.

According to Verplank, Tiger Woods should keep his day job.

“I wouldn’t recommend he go to a recording studio or anything like that,” he said.
