Dear Picker: Every football fan should required to scan back to your two blogs last week titled OU's Phobia (can't stop running quarterbacks on a good team), and Ten for Texas (why taking Texas plus the points was better than the stock market).

Brilliant, just brilliant.

Sincerely, The President of Your Fan Club.

Dear Intelligent Reader: Agreed.

You people need to put down your doughnuts and pay attention, there's much important stuff to cover here.

Season after season, year after year after year after year, all the OU homers come into the media saying the Sooners have the best offensive line ever, the greatest quarterback ever, new and improved D-backs, great recruits, sensational coaching, blah, yak, yak, yak, so on and so forth, etc.

And every year, not ever other year, not every third year, every time OU plays a good team with a quarterback who can run, it's over, the defensive scheme looks like something off a black-and-white newsreel. There goes the Oregon quarterback, the Texas quarterback, the West Virginia quarterback, the Boise quarterback.....does anybody notice a trend here?

After the loss, it's always the referees, its' always injuries, waaaaaa.

Here's the scoop, people: you can't play defense to stop the run first, anymore. Guess what, nobody runs out of the spread! Except the quarterback. See Vince Young results. If the quarterback isn't mobile in the spread, you're in trouble in prime time. Guess what else: All the pinheads are upset because OU can't run. There's a pretty good reason why OU can't run: IT'S IN THE SPREAD! How do you plan to run out of short punt formation? Nobody runs out of the spread. Except, again, the quarterback, scrambling, not option-running.

You win in this day and age with a mobile quarterback and a defense that stops the pass first.

Why is OSU suddenly better? New defensive coordinator. Why is Texas suddenly better? New defensive coordinator.

Nobody should be fired, anywhere. But a fresh thought from a fresh person couldn't hurt.

Under the current OU philosophy, how many monsterously huge games has Stoops won? One.

How many monsterously huge games has the current defensive staff won?

None.

Here's where OU is: Stoops is a great football coach. One of the best. He has established OU as an elite program year in and year old. He is a credit to the game. Beyond that one magic Heupel year, OU is not quite at the top level when it comes to winning a national championship because it hasn't been able to stop a mobile quarterback on a good team.

The OSU quarterback is the definition of a superior spread quarterback, shifty, good arm.

OU at OSU looks pick-em at this point.

Should TU be ranked?

Sure. In the top 50.

In the top 25?

No way.

Nationally, the BCS is its usual disgrance. Alabama can't make it undefeated. Penn State from the dreaded Big 10 is at Ohio State. There should be two playoff games after the season is finished -- MAKE USC and Penn State play somebody before the final game.

And if you have to lose, you should lose to a bum, like USC and Florida did. Lose to a good team, like OU did, it's hard to get around the one who beat you.

In summation: OU could use a fresh thought now and again on D. OSU needs to keep its quarterback healthy. TU needs to man up on D.

How 'bout them Cowboys?! HUGE win, that no one I know was calling but me. OSU homer, yea, but I see a much improved team too. Let's hope they don't stub their toe on Baylor this week!

TU played horrid against a horried SMU team. TU should've been prepared for SMU to give them all they have and more. TU just didn't play up to their potential.

OU? Well, they don't deserve to be ranked above an UNDEFEATED OSU team. OSU will earn the love - unlike OU who doesn't have to earn it, it's handed to them because they are equal only to God it seems. I for one am quietly happy (gotta keep peace in the family) that Texas put OU in their place and showed the nation OU's weakness - as we all saw during last year's bowl game.

Dawn, I would tend to agree: were the seasons flip-flopped, OU would no doubt be ranked way ahead of OSU.

The voters are pretty much out of it on a regular basis.

Tech, please, that's no top ten team, same old no defense to speak of.

A key game to circle is: Texas at Kansas!

An upset vibe is already filtering through.

One more point: Missouri's Daniel needs to wide up immediately. What a big, and we do mean BIG, spoiled pouter. He's the face of the offense, the team; you take one look at him and think, we're beat.

"Nobody runs out of the spread" - Picker

Tell that to Missouri. Kendall hunter had 154 yards against MU and is in the top 5 in the country in rushing yards. Hunter and Toston are both in the top 20 in yards per carry. OSU has had a 100 yard rusher in something like 15 of the last 16 games. And, last time I checked, OSU runs the spread offense.
World Picker (4 years ago)
Jeff, I left out a phrase, nobody but the quarterback runs out of the spread against a halfway decent team.

OSU ran against Missouri.

Who doesn't?

The point is, you don't have a mobile quarterback in the spread, you're in trouble.

Had OSU's quarterback not been such a threat, the OSU tailback would have gotten 4 yards. And, again, it was Missouri.
Bixby Jeff (4 years ago)
I get it. Last week Missouri was decent. They were ranked 3rd in the country and picked by you to beat OSU by 24. That means you thought they were even 10 points more decent than Vegas thought they were. Now, since OSU beat them, obviously everyone was wrong, especially you. They are not a decent team at all.
World Picker (4 years ago)
Lighten up, Jeff, you won.

Keep up the pontificating based on hindsight, Baylor could take you out.

You play Tech, Texas and OU. Let your team talk. Outraged in victory, perfect.
PW (4 years ago)
OU-Texas reminded me of the Houston Oilers at Buffalo Bills back in 1991. Oilers were fine long as they kept throwing it and pushing the pace. Once they tried to go to a grind it out running game, it was over. Couldn't do it. OU was fine long as the hurry up was clicking. But when they needed to run the ball, wasn't happening. Don't know if that's spread related or not, honestly. I submit though, that Murray is looking to be more like an Eric Metcalf type back. It's funny how Darren Sproles from K-State had more power up the middle than Murray seems to some weeks. Not saying the kid doesn't run hard, but he just doesn't seem to have "it" lately...

Bixby Jeff (4 years ago)
Hey, I'm an OSU fan. I know better than to make any kind of grand predictions about the future, even a home game against Baylor.

I'm just trying to debate your logic. There was no pontificating and I am not the slightest bit outraged. But, apparently you can never be wrong.

MIKE (4 years ago)
I'm sorry Pick, but Bixby Jeff is right on this one. You want to brag about how you were spot on about OU yet you won't own up to the fact that you were horribly off-base on the OSU-Mizzou match up? If you want to talk about humility among the OSU faithful, you need to look in the mirror first.

I do agree with you that a huge part of running the ball out of the spread is a mobile QB. With that being said, I believe the success comes down to only 2 types of plays: The zone read and the option pitch. Yes, the option pitch. It goes perfect with your mobile QB argument so why disparage it?
Thomas (4 years ago)
Picker, you are retarded. All you do is rag on teams so when they lose, you can say "I told ya so". OU didn't lose because the QB ran. OU lost because they didn't stop the pass. It's that simple. Somebody cover someone else from the other team, especially when they go over the middle, and the Sooner win. But they didn't, and that means they didn't win. This is not rocket science. But really, you are retarded. And to all OSU fans: Congrats on beating Missouri. You all beat a good team. A really good team. OSU has a good squad over there. QB is underrated and the HB is one of the nation's best. But don't act like you've won something yet. You still have as many conference championships as you did before the Missouri game. Zero. Hope OSU wins out until the OU game. Should be the best matchup yet. BOOMER SOONER!
Chris (4 years ago)
Picker,

New idea to discuss. OU can't run because their offensive line is not built to run a spread offense. Look at how bad OSU was the first year they went from Miles I-formation O to Fedora's spread. Couldn't run or stop pressure.

OU doesn't have the right recruits on the O-line to run the football in the spread. Period.

OSU does, that is why they have a top-3 rushing offense. And that will continue for years at OSU.
NORSEMUSTANG (4 years ago)
Picker, I think you already covered most of this, but could you go into detail about what you would do if you were Bob Stoops? What would you do with offense, defense, recruiting, etc.

Also, what would you say to frustrated Sooner fans who say that Stoops should leave?
NORSEMUSTANG (4 years ago)
What I mean is, is there a particular offense or defense around the country that you would switch to? And is there a particular type of player that should be recruited at certain positions?
Eric (4 years ago)
Stoops has too much loyalty to BV and the defensive staff. Mac Brown made changes withis coaching staff and got someone new on D. It was crazy to see BV start blitzing lewis and clayton after reynolds got hurt. You leave the middle linebacker back there in coverage by hisself with his head spinning like a top? Why not just send him up the middle...he anyone can do that....what happened to our D-line in the 2nd half? Best in the nation? I still think that our dfense has the athletes to be good but BV puts them in bad positions and doesnt take advantage of our athletic ability
Eric (4 years ago)
Oh and there has to be someone out there that can coach against the pass....someone with a new scheme that works....if you have so much loyalty to BV then keep him with the title Defensive Coordinator (of everything but the secondary) But for the love of god dont let your loyalty keep you from winning NC's! come on Bob! If i had done poor at my job for 6 straight years im pretty sure that i would expect to be fired or demoted. Brent should know its coming...heck he's getting paid 300,000 a year to do that!? Give me a chance!
Mike (4 years ago)
Wouldn't you think your loyalty would be to the one that pays you millions each year, and not a subordinate who has never come through? Venables has, and always will be, mediocre. As long as he's there, OU will be mediocre too. It's the same old story year after year. Great athletes, great recruiting, defense can't win the big ones...over and over and over. OU hasn't had a great defense since Mike Stoops left. Bob is getting paid a lot of money to make the hard decisions...when does he make one regarding his friend Venables?
WSmith (4 years ago)
You summed things up pretty succintly, Pick. The OU offensive line slant blocks without any change-up or creativity. As most of us know, the slant block is used in the spread and in punting situations - it isn't designed to block for runners trekking over tackle. And then Wilson has the unmitigated gall to try to publicly lay the blame on the failure of the run game on the backs 'not running hard enough.' Shades of Gary Barnett. And kudos to Stoopsy for his loyalty to Venables...but you'd think that since he (Stoops) is such a defensive guru he might help Venables save face by affording him some sound tips behind the scenes rather than simply allowing him (and BJ Wright, too) to flounder in the same uncreative, inflexible morass that has allowed decent teams to have their way with OU's philanthropic secondary. Switzer got by in the eighties with winning most of his games while losing the big ones; is Stoops taking the same path?
Smokin Joe (4 years ago)
So, what is the picker's overall record so far? is that listed anywhere?
World Picker (4 years ago)
Thomas, and others who might believe that when OU loses, there have to be reasons other than being out-coached or not having players as good as the other side:

One question for all the homers still crying about the injury to Ryan Reynolds: Did he play cornerback? Was he the one at the corner getting consistently torched, scorched, poached and roasted?

Here are the facts about the spread, plain and simple: If your quarterback isn't mobile and can't run as a consistent part of your offense, nobody can run. Period. Sure, the OSU tailback ran well. That's because the quarterback is a big-time scramble threat himself.

The spread was brought to our attention at some rinky-dink place like Northwestern, the entire premise being, the quarterback was like a fullback. Vince Young perfected the offence. Tim Tebow at Florida was exactly the same kind of spread quarterback.

So: if the quarterback can't run, nobody runs.

How do you stop the spread?

The way it appears is you recruit the best players and coach them well. In this day and age, if you coach to stop the run first, that's your business. But it's debatable strategy.

Finally, our condolences go out to Pitty Pat Jones, whose analyzing chart looked like the Dow Jones Index last week after he said time and time again on radio station KHMR, Homer Radio, that Texas was no good because it didn't have many good players.

Whoa.

The one who yells a lot on that station had the mighty Sooner D holding Texas to a measly 17 in an easy double-figure victory.

KHMR, don't leave your homer without it.

willie (4 years ago)
Hey picker, what a roll your on...expert information or so called that any of these homers could see if they got off the kOUl aid. As a razorback we could use some of the Texas recruits if we were in the Big 12 but that's not gonna happen... Long year ahead for us but the future seems bright.. TU could get us but we have our famous home cookin calls to help us. OU wins National Champs!! don't believe me listen to the radio. what do you know you played baseball.
Eric (4 years ago)
Brent V needs to leave...OU might win the rest of its games before blowing defensively again in a bowl. With the most weapons an OU offense has seen in quite sometime it is hard to guarantee 46 pts in a big game against a quality opponent....or the 49 it would have taken to beat WV....or the 56 it would have taken to beat USC-or the 44 it would have taken to beat boise-come on now....isnt that a bit ridiculous!!!???
steve (4 years ago)
hmmm....if the picker was knowledgable about how bad OU was, then why did he pick them over Texas?
WSmith (4 years ago)
Steve, that's just about the dumbest post hoc ergo propter hoc statement I've heard in awhile.
