Sanford and sons

Why do people act like idiots any time a television camera is pointed in their direction?

I was standing on the field following the Jenks-Union game on Friday night and I was part of a media delegation interviewing Jenks coach Allan Trimble. Because TV cameras were on, a bunch of yahoos ran up behind Trimble and proceeded to wail like a banshee and wave their arms. The noise level became so loud that Trimble's answers could barely be heard.

And what was gained by the yahoos?

Andy Warhol once predicted a future in which everyone would get 15 seconds of fame. Suppose your face appears in the background of a Trimble interview for, say, the duration of a five-second sound bite. Odds are, a Hollywood talent scout does not scan high school football highlight shows to find his next movie star. It reminds me of Fred G. Sanford, who, anytime he thought he was on camera, began singing "Moon River" or something of that sort because he thought he might have stumbled into a chance to audition.

Bottom line? Reality shows are garbage because most folks don't act "real" when a camera is pointed at them. They act the fool. Resist the temptation.

The power of Trimble became apparent, however. He barked at the masses behind him to calm down during the TV interview. They did.

Why does a person writing a column about people looking stupid incorrectly punctuate his first sentence? Good call critiquing the competence of individuals having fun at football games; I would consider literacy more of an issue.
