Say What?

Why is Bob Stoops mentioned for every good college football job?

Paterno wasn't. Osborne wasn't. Bo wasn't. Royal wasn't. Meyer isn't. Carroll isn't. Mack isn't. Tressel isn't.

Switzer wasn't!

Why is it always Stoops to Dallas, Stoops to Iowa, Stoops to Notre Dame, Hooterville, and everywhere in between?

Until the Florida mess, there has been no reason to say much, has there. Just no, I'm not going. Next question.

Now it's different.

With the Florida coach moving suddenly back into the spotlight to try to save Gator recruiting, saying that he might coach again soon after all, the same uneasiness can be imagined in and around Texas when it comes time to recruit against OU: Oh, you didn't hear? Florida is going to give Stoops anything he wants before long. But who knows, maybe the new Sooner coach won't be too bad.

So with Florida lingering, Stoops needs to say something:

1. I'm not going to coach Florida ever.
2. I might coach Florida one day.
3. No comment.

Whose business is it?

The recruits.

It is important to give recruits a definite answer in terms of your coaching status. When Coach K took a leave of absence (for one year) at Duke, recruiting suffered. If Urban does the same thing, it will affect Florida's recruiting. Stoops needs to give a definite answer. His answer will affect recruiting at OU, either positively or negatively.

Stoops also has an obligation to his own players. That, right now, is to keep them focused for the upcoming bowl game.

All the Florida talk can wait until after the game.

I'm sure recruits can and should respect that.

Obviously because he's very good at what he does and has Florida ties.  Iowa is obvious as well.  And there's no need to bring up the reasons for the ND speculation again.  I don't recall much of a story about him going to Dallas but I'm guessing it had something to do with the last great OU coach going there.  I would love to see that, after he wins a couple more NC's.  Of course he's seen his old boss try it and fail, so I wouldn't count on it.

OU to Texas recruit: You heard that Mack Brown is retiring soon, right? Could be next week. UT already making plans. No telling what will happen with the program....

All those doors swing both ways. Should probably concentrate on kids that have a lick of sense anyway. Well, unless they are really big or really, really fast.

So what if it did affect some recruits? He can't win a BCS bowl game with the greatest recruits in the world.

I would beg to differ, and say that some of the other coaches have been named in potential searches.  Maybe the fact that you live in Tulsa limits your World, and you don't get the scoop from SoCal or Florida.

For Stoops to be considered for other gigs is based on the fact that he is one of the most successful college coaches of the past decade.  There might be a job that comes along that interests him more, or the timing is right, and he moves on.  OU was here before him, will be here after him, and life goes on.  He has been a great member of the Sooner nation, oft criticized, oft second-guessed.
After all, isn't that what sports is all about.  Speculation, criticism, and rehashing past events.  There are some that make things happen, some that watch what happens, and those that talk about it.
