Say what, times three

Three “say what?” reactions to items in the sports pages today:

--Baylor guard Tweety Carter said this after a second-round NCAA Tournament victory over Old Dominion: “All through the season we were doubted, but as a team and as a family we found a way to win big games.”

Say what?

Exactly who has been doubting Baylor?

Did anybody really doubt Baylor was going to lose to Sam Houston State or Old Dominion in the first two rounds of the tournament? Anyone? Didn’t think so.

People have been bragging on Baylor all season -- or at least since it became evident that Epke Udoh was a program-changer. A group of Bears hasn’t gotten this much love since Walter Matthau talked the little gal into pitching for his little league team.

Kids play the lack of respect card way too much. Blame coaches for cultivating us-against-the-world atmospheres.

--A letter to the sports editor in the Dallas Morning News suggested that Tiger Woods is not fit to play in the Masters because it would tarnish the honor and tradition of the hallowed tournament.

Say what?

No way would I try to defend Woods’ infidelities. But if you start banning golfers who have had extramarital affairs from participating in tournaments, you might be scratching many names from the tee time list. Golf has groupies, too.

--Kansas’ second-round NCAA Tournament loss to Northern Iowa is a “say what?” moment in itself.

I didn’t fill out a bracket (which is un-American, of course) and I promise I wouldn’t have picked Northern Iowa to beat KU.

But I can rationalize what happened because Northern Iowa is one of those teams that is better than anyone wants to believe.

Big 12 teams combined to lose one -- one! -- nonconference home game this season. The team that delivered the lone blemish was Northern Iowa, which won at Iowa State.
