Sean Deserved Better
Published: 4/1/2008 7:56 PM
Last Modified: 4/1/2008 7:56 PM

Sean Sutton, and his family, deserved better than to be kicked out the door as OSU basketball coach after just two years.
Sean, and his entire family including Eddie, have done far too much for OSU than to be treated so poorly.
Every coach deserves at least three years. The only way someone should be out the door after a year or two is if there is something other than problems with the win-loss record.
If there are other reasons for Sean's firing, Mike Holder needs to let everyone know.
If not, Holder has made enemies with a lot of very loyal OSU alums and fans who do not share his values.
Coaches have an awful job, especially ones in high-profile positions.
Yes, they are paid a lot of money.
They also have to endure what should be some private misery in the public eye.
Sean should have been given a third year. Then, if things weren't better, Holder would have found a widespread consensus among OSU fans to make a change.
Instead, he has put OSU in the eye of a very nasty storm.

Classless. Mike Gundy must have pictures of Mike Holder and T Boone having carnal relations with livestock at the Animal Husbandry Center on campus. No other explanation how Gundy gets rewarded for mediocrity (18-20) in 3 years while Sean gets thrown under the bus for going 39-29 in 2 years.

Do you people really think it would have ver worked. Half the fans already want Sean fired. Giving him another year would only have prolonged the pain. The program is not where it should be. OSU should be a top 25 twam 8 out of every 10 years. It has not been for 3 years and likely will not next year either. In basketball you can turn a program very quickly. Texas and Kansas will always be good and the rest of the big 12 will be up and down. On most years there are not more than 3-4 really good teams. if you can't win then you should not be a coach at Oklahoma State. As for Gundy basketball and football are very different sports. In basketball you can win with 2 great players and a few other good ones. Look at Eddie, how many great players did he have. Big Country, Randy Rutherford, Desmond Mason, Joey G.. In football you really have to have 20-30 really good players to winnot quite apples to apples. I bet you will see if Gundy does not win once the new stadium is built he will be fired too.

How about that Gundy is Pickens' & Holder's golden boy who can do no wrong?

Ryan,

We were ranked in the top 25 last year.

You obviously know absolutely nothing about the big 12 basketball history. Texas has only been to 3 final fours. OU, OSU, Kansas and K-state all have more.

Before you comment do your research. Furthermore, what coach now wants this job? Very few mid-major coaches would want to come to a place where if they don't get to the NCAA tournament in two seasons then they will be fired. The only guys that like jobs like that are guys like Petrino. I don't think we want guys like him.

Oh well sean sutton sucked and his daddy is a drunk so who cares? Choke State sucks also and i hope you guys have to higher some high school girls coach!!Boomer!!

I agree with Arthur: what coach in his right mind will come to a place that just did this to Sean?

I mean, if being the son of an OSU legend, and posting two winning seasons in a row doesn't get you at least a third year .....?

I want to win as badly as the next guy, but not at the expense of class.

If OSU wins the National Championship in the next few years, I won't feel good about it.

It's an embarrassment to see my University treat the Sutton family this way. Yes, Eddie made a mistake- but he did more for OSU than T-Boone ever will.

Apples and Oranges. Gundy will not be outworked and is building a program, Sean was not. Comparing Basketball and Football programs is armchair. Good coaching, hard work and organization is needed for both, but it is much harder to put together an 85 piece puzzle than a 15 piece one. You need look no further than Kurt Budke, who started with very little, but produced a winner. The men's program was on great footing with the Suttons on top. They both contributed to this day as well. Blaming Holder is like blaming the boss who fired your buddy when you know he (your buddy) brought it on himself. It is unfortunate for Sean, but he was given a golden opportunity with a program shortly removed from a final four, great facilities and a big fan base. He did not get out of first round of the NIT. Like it or not, the job pays a lot and like any high paying job, the bar is high.

Check out Comment #3 from Boomer. He can't even spell hire. Typical. Another know it all shows his ignorance.

"If OSU wins the National Championship in the next few years, I won't feel good about it"...

Oh, OK...

If the team takes the floor and looks well coached NEXT year, I'll feel good about it.

I think that all the Sean apologists are glossing over the fact that his team rarely displayed proper fundamental basketball, quit in many games (more 30pt losses in 2+ years than in the prior 15yrs), the disgraceful performance on the road, the inexcusable losses to a very pathetic ou team with an inferior coach, and more importantly all the off court problems with the players. These players never respected Sean and were never held accountable. One more year was never going to change these facts and Holder merely recognized that fact. It is funny that all the media types are decrying this 'unwarranted' decision and the fact OSU won't hire someone better. Their reaction betrays their hatred of the OSU and the hypocrisy that exists in this state. Where was the disgust when Schnellenberger and Blake were fired. Instead of fawning all over Kelvin Sampson for 10 years why didn't they report on the continuing violations he racked up over the years and his always questionable ethics. The media's crocodile tears over Sean is laughable. The only point that they have made that is accurate is that Gundy isn't held to the same standard. Part of that is that the football program was never on the level of basketball when Gundy took over and the standards are different, but the other part is that Gundy is Holder's boy. Welcome to the real world Sittler - life isn't fair sometimes. Now could you please go on to write more of the articles you are best at such as the fawning pieces about Bob Stoops and Joe C.

It's embrassing to fire Sean? Keep one more year so he could be fired then? Eddie left the program in a mess over his last few years. Eddie brought it up and Eddie took it down. That makes him tied at 1-1. Sean could have brought it back but did not. Two many losses he should have won. Two many players that left why? And all this is Boones fault???
Mac (5 years ago)
All this complaining about Boone reminds me of kids complaining about their parents putting them thru school. How many of the above even give any money to OSU???
Baboon Pickens (5 years ago)
Check out comment from "Joe" he has trouble with the thought process. He can't control his rage enough to post back at what he took as a slight in an accurate manner. Typical, another know-it-all shows his ignorance. You see Joe, you need a comma after typical, and you need to hyphenate know-it-all. Typical, another OSU fan shows "his" ignorance.

Hey "Tulsaosufan", your last sentence in your post shows much jealousy, paranoia, and a large amount of small organ syndrome.

You just can't make this stuff up.

Everyone go read Tramel's column in the Daily OK. It sets the story straight. Sean had to go. It was time. The team was a mess and there was no improvement evident to warrant keeping him for a lame duck 3rd year.
dave (5 years ago)
Berry Trammel is hardly in the know with respect to OSU sports. The only thing he sees viewing 'Orange' thru crimson shaded glasses is bullsh!t.
Jake (5 years ago)
As a fan of Oklahoma sports altogether it sickens me what has transpired at OSU. Two years is not enough and Sean deserved at least a third year. No wonder OSU WILL NEVER COMPETE WITH OU OR ANYONE ELSE IN FOOTBALL AND WILL WATCH OU PLAY IN BIG 12 TITLE YEAR IN AND YEAR OUT. FIRE HOLDER HE'S MORON!!!!!!!!

How can you justify firing Sean after 2 years with a record of 39-29 and giving Gundy an extension after 3 years with an overall record of 18-19 and an 8-16 conference record? Of his 18 wins 2 are against Florida atlantic, 2 are against arkansas State, montana State, and Missouri state. Gundy's record against Texas, texas A&M, and Oklahoma is 0-9. CRAZY!

To blame Mike Holder for this train wreck is to ignore who set this thing in motion originally. The guy who started this is Holder's predecessor by naming Sean "Head Coach Whatever". If they truly wanted him to be the OSU head coach - then he should have been encouraged to go to a mid-major and learn his craft and establish a proven track record as a head coach. Then come back. As it is now, the guy who started this promptly up and left so he was not around for the crash, no matter how good Sean becomes - he will never be able to come back. Remember, every player Sean has - he recruited. Every one. No "big man" - his fault. Not enough quality players - his fault. McDonalds All American who has showed up for only 5 games in 2.5 years - his fault. Three NIT 1 and out appearances - his fault. Media "love child" - your fault.

I just read an article and most of 23 comments telling how the OU folks feel about Sutton, Holder, OSU and T Boon. They don't like it even a little bit and I wouldn't expect anything less from them.
I have a lot of OSU friends and none of them, not even one, has said they were the disgruntled fan the media talks about. My OU friends think Sutton was treated unfairly.... listen guys, let me explain it to you. If I gave you 2 1/2 million dollars over the next 3 years to quit a job you obviously weren't qualified for, you'd be on it quicker than my dog can get on a hamburger and be happy to get it .... and so will Sean.
So don't worry so much Sooners, we got it covered.... go POKES

Below is an e-mail that I sent to Mike Holder

Mr. Holder,

The wrong person is leaving. You should leave and Sean should be staying. He compiled the best record for his first two years of any basketball coach in the big 12. If you would have had to recruit against as many schools as he did your record would not look as good as it does. It is a sad day when a coach of a minor sport becomes an AD and fires a coach whose ties with OSU are deeper than yours. Do the honorable thing and hire him back then resign.

Bob
