Self may respect the Sooners as a coach, but he hated them as a player

Love the question asked Bill Self Thursday, in advance of Saturday's Kansas-Oklahoma game in Norman: When you were in college, was Oklahoma the team you hated the most?
"Yeah. Absolutely," answered Self, OSU Class of 1985. "I think it's hard to grow up in a state where you go to the rival school and not feel that way, especially if you play collegiate sports. So without a doubt that was the case.
"We grew up in Oklahoma feeling the same way about the Sooners that people here grew up feeling about the Tigers or the Wildcats. That's par for the course."
Follow-up: Were you recruited by OU?
"No," Self said. "They already had a slow, white point guard. So there was no reason to have two on the roster."
I assume that was a playful jab at Tommy Tubbs, who played for his dad from 1983-85.
"I liked Billy a lot," Self continued. "But I don't think I fit Billy's athletic, pressing scheme."
