There were more than a few concerns when the LPGA decided to put a regular-season tournament in Tulsa.
For starters, it was to be held just a few months after the 2001 U.S. Open at Southern Hills Country Club. Many wondered if there were enough financial and volunteer resources to do a tournament so quick after the Open.
Then, there was the no small concern about doing a golf tournament in the middle of football season.
These days those concerns have long evaporated. The tournament has been moved to the spring and Tulsa has proven to be a good home for the LPGA.
This is a big enough city, with a long history in professional golf, to handle such an event. And, the move to the spring eliminated the competition to college football.
The SemGroup Championship Presented by John Q. Hammons is underway this week at Cedar Ridge Country Club.
It is one of the best stops on the regular tour and enjoys widespread support.
Just as some predicted, Tulsa proved to be a fine home for the LPGA.
