Shame on the Voters
Published: 10/15/2007 1:02 PM
Last Modified: 10/15/2007 1:02 PM

Here are the top 15 stories of the week/weekend.

15. Poll voters are an embarrassment.

Ohio State can't be number one. The Big Ten is horrible. How horrible is the Big Ten? Iowa State beat Iowa, that's how low that conference is. Ohio State shouldn't even be in the top ten.

14. Coaches don't write their own tickets.

The two college coaches who make notes during a game, Frannie of the Aggies, and Callahan of poor Nebraska, appear to be goners.

13. Lou Holtz is funny.

He said Nebraska is like Enron. Everybody says nothing is wrong, everything is fine. Then one morning: ruination.

12. In other news: World Series to start.

If it's Cleveland and Colorado, there will be no TV ratings to speak of.

11. It's almost swimming season.

The big four college basketball teams could have a collective .500 record.

10. Get the hook.

Blabbermouth Cris Collinsworth said that New England could be the best football team in NFL history.

Funny how, without all the penalties, Dallas could have just defeated it.

9. We love you Bob.

Leading Missouri by 11, in the second half, OU went for two for some reason.

National media questioned the call. Local media comments: We love you Bobby baby.

8. How much would somebody have to pay us to see Garth Brooks open the new downtown building next year?

We'd go for $250. Plus parking.

7. OU has good luck.

A Missouri defender dropped an interception in his end zone.

6. USC flame-out number 50?

Carson Palmer.

5. Good riddance.

One team OU probably doesn't want any more of: Missouri.

4. Our top five.

1. South Florida.

2. South Carolina.

3. Oregon.

4. Kansas.

5. OU.

3. Why do people continue to love LSU?

No idea. Odds it will lose another: 60-40 that it will.

2. Great upset pick of Kentucky over LSU.

Why, thank you.

1. The spread offense revolution continues in the colleges.

Excellent throwers pass to excellent receivers over cornerbacks that are converted centers.

The only way to stop a great spread offense? Get a pass rush from the front four once in a while.

Check out the Week 8 Picks: For talking heads, truth most likely inconvenient

South Flo., South Carolina and Kansas in your top four? c'mon, and I thought you knew something about football. Kansas will be beat by Missouri, maybe even Colorado in boulder. South Carolina barely survived last weekend and South Florida may be the next team to get beat by Rutgers. I'm not even sure OU is a top five team at this time and I'm an OU fan. But who is a legit top five team this year? If OU calls another defensive game like they did against Missouri Venebles ought to be on the defensive for his job. Get rid of the three down lineman and the prevent defense and man up and take somebody on. I guess I should be happy they won but I left that game very dissatisfied. Not even mentioning two fumbles lost by the same reciever giving Missouri the short field. By the way how can you seriously take LSU out of the top five?
WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
LSU was outplayed by Florida at home. It will probably lose at Alabama in two weeks.

Kansas State obliterated the mighty Colorado that beat OU; Kansas won AT Kansas State.

Here's the joke of the week: FSN picked OU-Iowa State for television over Oklahoma State-Kansas State.

That's horrible. It kills recruiting, not being on TV.

Is OU winning 60-3 better viewing that a tight OSU, K-State?

No.

Max (5 years ago)
"2. Great upset pick of Kentucky over LSU.

Why, thank you."

I believe in giving credit where credit is due but here is what you actually picked, copied directly from your picks.

"LSU by 2"

You picked Kentucky to beat the spread, not to beat LSU.

JDG (5 years ago)
Picker,
Could it be FSN knows more people will tune in for a crappy OU vs. ISU than for OSU vs. KSU? It is all about the money and OSU isn't going to bring the viewers. (Example. OSU vs. Nebraska being on PPV) I do agree with you the OSU game will be much better viewing.

Regarding the two point conversions against MU, why wouldn't you go for two. At that point it was still a two possesion game. Your thoughts?
disgusted (5 years ago)
As you know, going by who beat who and by how much is not a good barometer for picking games in a season like this. There is no clear cut favorite. Anyone of these teams can win when things are going right. Anyone of these teams can look awful when things go wrong.
FSN is obviously banking on viewers tuning in to see OU. No, its not right. People who enjoy college football would rather see OSU vs K-State. I would like to see that game anyway. If KU goes undefeated in the big twelve north making it to the conference championship game then I will put them in my top five. If South Carolina wins their conference then I'll believe they are a top five team. If OU gets by Tech and OSU handily then I think they deserve top five. If your going to put KU in the top five then Ohio State has to be in the top five. Both are undefeated. What about Boston College? Maybe there are seven or eight teams out there that are top five teams at any given moment on any given day.

LSU MAX: Please scan down to the number one story last week, to quote, directly: "Kentucky probably takes down Les "Today's Genius" Miles Saturday."

Disgusted: BC has a good quarterback and little else and is one of those ESPN teacher's pets. South Florida won at Auburn and beat West Virginia...to date, nobody can equal that. South Carolina barely lost to LSU, then changed quarterbacks and appears very solid. Best defense in the country.

JDG: You're right, more people would probably watch OU...for a half. But leaving off OSU-K-State simply doesn't seem fair. Fairness has no place in TV, though.

About going for two up 11, the prevailing thought is simply get it away from a two possession game.

Bad news for Big 12 foes: the Nebraska AD just got booted through the uprights.

13. Lou Holtz is funny.

He said Nebraska is like Enron. Everybody says nothing is wrong, everything is fine. Then one morning: ruination."

The Associated Press reported one hour ago that Steve Pederson, athletic director of Nebraska, has been fired by the chancellor.

Callahan and Fran head to head this week in an essay contest, flip a coin I say. Mr. Picker, don't you find it tiresome when readers always try to point out your supposedly conflicting picks, I know I do. Keep up the funny insights and--wait, I hear my phone ringing, must be Kelvin Sampson, I better get this...
WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
First Edition: He is clearly a serial caller who belongs in a 24-step program, up to redemption and back, at least. Last time he was in Norman, he got a standing O. Think he might catch a little heat around the Big Ten, entire student sections as cells.....

Rob (5 years ago)
You have South Florida ranked #1...last week, you said:

"11. South Florida is no good at all.

Central Florida could take it out this weekend.

ESPN hype made it what it is today, vastly overrated."

Way to stick to your convictions...I haven't seen that big of a flip-flop since John Kerry ran for President. You're not even drinking your own Kool-Aid, you expect us to?
Walt (5 years ago)
LSU by 2/Kentucky to upset LSU. I guess you must never be wrong on a pick.
OU secondary hasn't been the same since Mike left. However, Missouri's offense can make a lot of people look bad. They lost their composure late. OU was good enough to win. May be just good enough to win out.
I really do enjoy the bi-polar OSU crowd. The highs and the lows must be more fun than vacation. The lows seem to be nearer to reality than the highs.
AG (5 years ago)
Did OU win, or did Missouri lose because of unforced errors? Missouri's mistakes can make some very luck team look good.

LSU MAX: Please scan down to the number one story last week, to quote, directly: "Kentucky probably takes down Les "Today's Genius" Miles Saturday."

Is probably a prediction? By saying probably you could say you didn't really predict Kentucky to win if LSU had won. LSU by 2 is a prediction. That is what you had in your picks on 10/11.
WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
Easy Max, you get to play a team with no offense and a coach about to move on this week.

Les Mileage's coaching should be no factor.

You win easily.

ROB: Might you have noticed from time to time that things change greatly in college football?

That there have been more upsets this year, from week to week, than every before?

Ask around, it's true.

So things change, ROB. Except perhaps for you. The Florida team, by virtue of what happened to numerous others, is better by comparison.

To: World Picker, aka OSU/TU Homer
From: FSN
Is OU winning 60-3 better than a tight OSU, KSU game? Answer: You bet. Any day.

Dallas folded like a cheap accordian. Penalties had nothing to do with the loss. Someone needed to make a play after a penalty--someone besides New England.

To: Disgusted
From: Brent Venebles & the OU defense.
You need to check the record book stats and you will find that Mike Stoops' defenses gave up as much if not more yards than mine have in many, many games. When you get finished reading the stats, send them to OSU/TU Homer so he can read them. Then I will accept your apology. I am serious. You are dead wrong.
Al G (5 years ago)
Hey Mister Picker. Do you think all these upsets this season could be because of global warming?
Max (5 years ago)
I am not an LSU fan. I am an OSU fan who happens to be living in Louisiana because that is where my wife is from. In spite of all the Aggie jokes I do know the difference between a prediction and a maybe. My prediction at the beginning of the season was that LSU and OU would play for the national championship with LSU winning because of having a better defense. That does not appear likely now but if was my prediction and I am stuck with it. It still could happen. I even pull for OU when I am down here just as a matter of state pride. I am happy when any team from my home state does well even though it might be my preferred team.
Max (5 years ago)
The last part of my last comment should have read "even though it might not be my preferred team." The error was due to old age, not because I am an Aggie.
WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
Mr. Gore (Al G): That's a good point about global warming causing the upset meltdown.

Is this your thought? Overly hot temperatures have taken a toll on linemen with big guts, negating pass rushes and enabling thinner quarterbacks and catchers to have field days?

Not bad at all, Al, G. You know, they used to say, and some blockheads still say, that up north in places like Nebraska, you had to be able to run the ball in cold weather.

Only, what cold weather? Last game in Lincoln, it'll probably be 79.

Max: All the time you spend worrying about what I did or did not pick, you could have helped feed a poor child.

nit picker (5 years ago)
Well, World Picker, aka OSU/TU Homey, I do believe Max-LSU has you this time. You did not PICK UK over LSU. You may wish it to be so, but that does not make it so.

World PIcker: Could you tell us again how good Dallas is? Looking at the score it appears NE tossed the Cowboys around like rag dolls. Penalties my a**.
BTW, why all the anger toward cornerbacks? Did one steal your girlfriend in highschool or college?
Rob (5 years ago)
Mr WORLDPICKER, with all due respect, you're just not making sense.

You're saying that in the period of 1 week, South Florida went from "No good at all...vastly overrated..." (and basically a team completely fabricated by ESPN), to your #1 team in the country...really?

I'm well aware that things change, but a team can't go from "no good at all...vastly overrated" to #1 in the period of a week. Either they're overrated and no good, or they're not - that kind of thing doesn't change in a week - was it their convincing blowout of unranked Conference USA powerhouse Central Florida that did it for you?

Tell us how another team's loss, a Pac 10 team for example, can make a team in another conference (with no common opponent) who just last week was "no good at all," the number 1 team in the country - I can't wait.

2 weeks ago I went to Burger King - I had the #5, with cheese - and "it was no good at all." Last Saturday, I went to Taco Bell for lunch, which sucked - and to Pizza Hut for supper - which was terrible. Based on what happened last Saturday, I now declare Burger King to be the best fast food restaurant in the country. That makes sense - right?
Max (5 years ago)
I believe you would prefer that I spend time worrying about what you did or not pick in your column than that I not read the column at all. If not for the controversy spurred by your column there would be no reason to read it. I certainly don't read it because of your excellent knowledge of football because I usually beat you. However, I do enjoy the comments brought on by some of your inane picks and I do get a chuckle from the way you pick numerous possible upsets then crow about the few you hit and forget those you miss. Please don't stop doing that. It makes your column more interesting.
WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
Dallas is pretty good except for its secondary, which can't stop the pass.

Why has Roy Williams been voted All Pro?
