She's Got Game

Because my job primarily involves covering college sports teams, I rarely see a high school game anymore. I made an exception Thursday and saw part of the Oklahoma's Best girls high school basketball tournament. Here's my reaction: Wow.
If you appreciate watching gifted people, then Sapulpa's Alyssia Brewer is a must-see sports attraction. She signed a letter of intent with Tennessee and it's easy to see why. She can score inside, she can score outside and she seems so darn smooth when doing it that you figure she'll be playing for pay someday.
Of course there are other good players in the tournament field and I'm not savvy enough to identify them all, although I know Tahlequah Sequoyah sparkplug Angel Goodrich signed with Kansas and Adair's Kevi Luper (daughter of former OSU football player Kevin Luper) is a coveted prospect, though she currently is battling through injury and illness.
Adair played Sapulpa on Thursday and it was an interesting experiment because it was small-town tradition vs. a bigger population (and talent) base. Basketball is a way of life in small towns like Adair. For instance, the mom of Adair guard Chelsey Stricklen (she's got serious range on her 3-pointer) played on back-to-back state title teams back in the 1980s. A generation later, Adair is still playing in state tournaments.
OSU coach Kurt Budke and ORU coach Jerry Finkbeiner were spotted courtside Thursday. I don't know if they are going back, but I am.
