Shock-ing news: Draft lottery and Liz meets Queen

Tulsa Shock center Elizabeth Cambage met a more famous Elizabeth (hint: the word “Queen” appears before her name) last week.

Before spilling details on that encounter, here’s some pertinent information regarding whether Cambage will play alongside a No. 1 overall draft pick in the future.

The lottery for the 2012 WNBA draft will be staged Nov. 10 in New York and the Shock, which posted a league-worst record of 3-31 in 2011, owns the best odds of landing the top pick.

Tulsa has 442 chances out of 1,000 of winning the lottery and can’t pick lower than fourth. WNBA champion Minnesota has 276 chances, followed by Chicago (178) and Los Angeles (104).

Tulsa also had the best chance of winning the most recent draft lottery, but got the No. 2 pick and selected Cambage, a 6-foot-8 Australian. Minnesota won the lottery, selected Maya Moore with the top pick and won a championship.

Minnesota crept back into the lottery because of a trade -- post player Nicky Anosike for a first-round pick -- with Washington two days prior to the 2011 WNBA draft. Washington won only six games last season.

Now, back to the Elizabeth-meets-Elizabeth story:

Cambage is home in Australia. Queen Elizabeth is touring Australia. Cambage was invited to attend a reception for the queen that was hosted by Australian prime minister Julia Gillard.

According to an AP report, Cambage described the queen as a “tiny, tiny delicate thing” and said, “she was lovely and so sweet, very queeny. She carries herself with so much grace and has time for everyone.”

Very queeny? If you’ve been around Cambage, that sounds exactly like something she would say.

The AP report said Cambage (who was born in London) towered above politicians, charity heads and diplomats at the reception. The story described her as “a striking figure with long hair that was shaved at the sides and (she) wore a colourful Carla Zampatti dress.”

Carla Zampatti? A name that should be more interesting to Shock fans is Nnemkadi Ogwumike. She’s a Stanford senior who could be the first player picked in the next WNBA draft.
