Sick of Tebow? Don't read this

Gennaro Filice is someone I can identify with, a sportswriter whose name places him much closer to European soccer than college football. It's therefore a pleasure to read his BCS championship breakdown on SI.com.

His three reasons Oklahoma will beat Florida include OU's offense, the Big 12's might and my favorite:

"They're more battle-tested," he writes. "The Sooners defeated four teams (Texas Tech, TCU, Cincinnati and Oklahoma State) that finished the regular season in the AP poll's top 15. The Gators beat just one (Alabama)."

Filice's three reasons Florida will beat OU include the Gators' defense, Urban Meyer's BCS success and this beauty:

"Tim Tebow simply won't let them lose," he writes. "Every football fan in America is tired of CBS analyst Gary Danielson's love affair with Tebow. But truth be told, Danielson's words ring true. Tebow is one of the greatest leaders this sport has ever seen. In his two seasons as a starter, Tebow has willed his team to victory more times than I can count. He's a winner, plain and simple. And winners don't lose championship games in which they're favored."

Can he count to 1? Tebow is 1-5 in 4th quarter comebacks.

What happened to Tebow's WILL on 4th and 1 against Ole Miss? Great leaders don't lose at home to Houston Nutt.

"And winners don't lose championship games in which they're favored."

That broad, sweeping generalization has been disproved so many times it is difficult to cite the laundry of lists of "can't miss" champions that went home without the "loving cup".

Sportswriters who write that kind of pablum usually have had too many shots of whiskey and have convince d themselves of their own brilliance.

This one about Tebow is another, almost Shakespearean deluded bromide. It is a declaration of unrequited love for a young football player who fortune has shined upon until today, only stained when the "gods of newsprint" bypassed his magnificence in favor of the pretender, Sam Bradford.

Let's find out if the Romancing of Tebow turns out to be a fairy tale or a tragedy for these besotted sports writers when the game is over.

I, for one, would like to offer the sportswriters a favorite recipe of "Sooner crow" to stuff down their gullets. It would be a fitting end to their unmitigated idol worship of this young man from Florida.
