Significant improvement on kickoff coverage
Published: 11/19/2010 9:30 AM

Through seven games, while using mostly freshmen on the kickoff-coverage unit, Oklahoma State’s coverage statistically was the worst in college football.

The Cowboys had given up three touchdown returns. But since deciding to use seniors like Tolu Moala, Bryant Ward and Bo Bowling on the coverage unit, coach Mike Gundy and special-teams coordinator Joe DeForest have seen substantially better results.

In their last three games, on a combined total of 13 returns by Kansas State, Baylor and Texas, the Cowboys have not allowed a runback of more than 28 yards.

“We’ve been lucky. Guys have gotten better,” Gundy said. “We worked really hard in improving those areas.”

Nice coaching adjustments. This also explains why Bryant Ward & Tolu Moala have seen fewer reps during the game.

Question for you, Bill: What's going on with Tracy Moore? We saw him on the special teams for K-State, but have only a few sightings in any phase of the game since.

Ah, I saw Moore catch a touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter of the Kansas game. So, the answer is that he's buried on the depth chart.

A good stat to include would be where OSU's kickoff returns allowed the last three games would rank in comparison with the rest of the NCAA. I'd like to see how far they've improved from last.
