Silent Cheering

Even my thoughts are echoing.
Stephen Pingry/Tulsa World

We went to a tea party the other night and a TU basketball game broke out.

We've seen more people in the canned soup section at the grocery the afternoon before a snow flurry.

We've heard more noise in a library.

TU basketball is a somewhat unique and extremely fragile situation, on the court and in the stands.

You go to basketball games for two reasons. First, loyalty. TU is a small school with far fewer students and local graduates than most. The other reason why people go to a basketball game is because the team is successful, therefore entertaining.

The TU hoop coach seemed slightly peeved with the lack of crowd action at the most recent game.

There's a holiday hangover.

And, TU's home schedule resembled a pick-up league down at the local gym.

It might not be fair, but it's no surprise, either: sports teams must win fans. Which came first, the dunk or the fan? No contest. The dunk.

Nobody is going to OU hoop games. Why? Former coach Kelvin Sampson left the program in the salvage yard.

How does a team win fans? It starts with a great player or two.

Why would a great player or two come to a place that's a little down in the mouth?

Nobody said that digging a program out of the Dumpster would be remotely easy.

What do you think TU fans should do? Is there anything we can do? I think if the fans keep it up like this, we should start scheduling our reservations to watch the first round NIT away game. I was ashamed by the crowd last night. If you get up and cheer, people look at you like you brought a drum set to meditation class.

So you were the one cheering.
It's just an unfortunate fact of rebuilding a program, I guess.
If somebody said that movie is boring, go see it, would you?

The other thing is that TU mismanages crowds -- has done so ever since moving to Reynolds. There were a few times that the crowd awoke from the Dip n Dot induced haze and started to make some noise -- ECU either quicly called timeout or TU would stamp out the noise. The latter is unforgiveable. At one point, they had cheerleaders trying to get the "Golden -- Hurricane" chant going during the band's rendition of "Viva Las Vegas." So, if you want to cheer, you're going to miss TU's ode to the King. Sadly, I think there are more Elvis fans. Has the World ever thought about doing a story on this? Surely you guys have noticed this stuff.

.....thought the same thing last night, something like a party co-ordinator is needed.....

We're concerned TU is about to make a football head coach hire that will make us frown mightily and wonder: What in the world were they thinking about with that guy!
TAB (6 years ago)
Don't like TG? I love the guy and wonder if his abscence had something to do with our collapse this year
It also means Bubba plays hardball and that's not a bad thing for TU. He certainly can recruit. The bad part is that it's kind of a Buzz Peterson deal, with us being on the other end.

Who does Mr. Picker think would be the best coach for the TU job? I kind of thought the OC at Boone State in Stillwater would be a good choice, but what do I know.

Coker is a good guy, but not too exciting. The perfect fit for TU is now residing in Louisville. Oh well, here's hoping they don't hire another Burns.

DId Jerry O. really have as much to do with this as being reported?

I was at the game against East Carolina and the whole atmosphere reeked of sleepiness. I am a die hard TU fan and there are nights when the "building" itself lacks energy overall. It may have something to do with the fact that all of the home games to this point have been yawners against teams that no one really had to worry about. As the conference season pciks up, I suspect the energy level in the Don will as well.

P.S. The cheerleaders and band are un-inspiring and un-coordinated. Unions poms and cheerleaders do better routines than TU's. Yank their scholarships

Afternoon, people.

It's Friday and I'm just back from the Cherokee casino where people were taking what minds they had left off the ice storm.

Some Oklahomans have gone beyond gambling fever. Some Oklahomans have the gambling plague.

The state should legalize football parlay cards. Sell them out of machines. Clean up.

TU's football hire was a good one. I was terrified they'd go for somebody just fired.

The basketball team needs one great player.

BLA is exactly right, the home schedule is good for the players, bad for the spectators.

And that's a great point about the cheering/entertainment elements needing work.

I'll forward the comments along to TU.

Here's a pro football playoff thought: Won't Seattle beat the Bears outright?

The basketball needs a couple of guys who can catch the ball in the paint and put it in the basket. They don't even have to be tall, but that would help. I think these guards are better than what TU had the last time they were in the tournament. If they had KJ still, they'd be pretty good. Without someone like that, the guards are pressed to get open.

TU students need to get on their lazy rears and get to the game. What the hell are they doing on a Wednesday at the start of the semester? They truly are sorry.

What is with the team wearing Tye Dye anyway? Do you remember when the Lithuanian national team did that stuff? They looked like a bunch of fairies.

Everyone who remembers what was like for TU to be good and be a student has up and graduated. Back then organizations and students planned their schedules around the basketball games. It is going to take something special like a tourney berth to get them interested. By that time, Wojcik will have had enough and left for better fan support.

These are great points. It seems clear that some effort needs to be put into creating a party atmosphere at a TU game. But don't forget how lousy the home schedule has been. For all the neutral observers TU relies on for a great crowd, that's important. People are all the time wondering why nobody goes to an OU basketball game. Here's why: They're not very good.

The sport fan phenomenon in Tulsa has always been a poser. The last time they supported a football team in droves Howard Twilley was catching balls; and god only knows how the university was able to authorise building their new basketball facility with the support they receive from the community. The size of the marketplace is a major consideration for pro teams when placing a new or moving an existing team, but the voracity of the fan base is another important factorl, and Tulsa simply does not support local teams. They did fill Skelly on occasion during the USFL days and even the Roughnecks filled it once or twice, but these isolated events were as much or more attributable to the attraction of the visiting team (e.g. the Cosmos in the NASL...) than due to any fan base affiliation for the home team. Why is this? You tell me.
