So far, former OSU recruit a non-factor at Texas

Remember Darius White? At this time a year ago, the Fort Worth Dunbar High School star was rated by Scout.com as a five-star prospect and the nation's No. 1 wide receiver recruit.

White also was an Oklahoma State recruit of the highest priority, and multiple sources indicated that the Cowboys had a very legitimate chance of signing the 6-foot-4, 210-pound wideout.

Instead, on Jan. 2 (the same date on which OSU lost to Ole Miss in the Cotton Bowl), White announced during the nationally televised Under Armour All-America Game that he would be signing not with Oklahoma State, but with the University of Texas.

How did that work out for Darius White? So far, not so good.

On the Longhorn depth chart, White is listed as a third-team split end. Through eight games, playing for a Longhorn team that is 4-4 overall with three home losses and ranks 10th in the Big 12 in scoring and seven in pass offense, he has zero receptions. None.

Meanwhile, the 17th-ranked Cowboys lead the Big 12 in scoring, pass offense and total offense. Justin Blackmon has been great, but he has been OSU’s only consistent big-play receiver. At the very least, White would have been given every opportunity to play as a freshman, if not start.

Texas is a great place to play football, but if White had known in January what he knows now – that the 2010 Longhorn offense would crumble while OSU’s would flourish – would he have made the same decision? Or would he have signed with the Cowboys? Through eight games in Dana Holgorsen’s offense, White might have had 35 catches and several touchdowns.

Or Weeden "might" not see him like he doesn't see most of his other receivers when Blackmon is on the field and his numbers would be equally poor.

I like this "might" game -- can we play again?

Good Job H823. That's 16 different people getting a pass from Weeden. Can't blame him for wanting to prefer Blackmon because of his ability to hang on, make difficult catches , and yards after the run.

Can't blame Darius too much, given the way OSU looked then. Hindsight is easy but not worth much.

Bill, you gonna give us prediction on OSU's November record? A month ago you indicated OSU would go 1-3 in October. 3-1 was pretty nice.

Has White been on the field for any snaps or is UT going to redshirt him due to what has become a subpar season?

If they do redshirt him, I don't think he has reason yet to regret his decision. Texas will be back up just as fast as they tumbled down. If in two years he is still on the bench we can legitimately have this discussion.

MexiMike, you're right, but most kids want to play right away if at all possible. In White's case, though, what makes anyone think he'd be playing much, if at all, at OSU? If he can't do better than 3rd on the depth chart at UT this season, how would he get on the field at OSU? And if he is 3rd at UT, surely he'd be playing, so...not red shirting. IDK the whole story, but it sounds as if the kid was somewhat overated as a 5-star recruit.

Bob, I don't know if he is overrated but he definitely could have walked in there with a huge head and a lousy work ethic.

Kids in high school can get by on talent alone but if they don't have the drive to consistently practice and play at a high level, they usually end up being busts at the college level.
