Somebody Do Something

Here's a basketball question.

What do the following teams have in common: Marist, Hofstra, Austin Peay, Robert Morris, Cal Poly, Stephen F. Austin, Northern Arizona, Fordham, Maryland Baltimore County, Bucknell, Buffalo, Chatanooga and Brown.

If you know the answer, you're probably somewhat despressed.

These nobody's are all ranked ahead of Tulsa's basketball team.

In one set of ratings that go all the way to nowhere, TU is ranked 197.

Help.

WP:

You've been hesitant to hit the panic button over on 11th street. It's probably time now, right?

No one who’s seen them play could argue with 197. That’s an ugly attempt…and especially so as a third try.

The lack of interest over TU hoops is alarming.

Somebody needs a plan...of expectations and consequences, right?

Or there will be 800 people in the gym.

Four hundred paid.

What was up with those horrible grey OU uniforms? That was disgusting. That wasn't OU's color. Get 'em out of here.

I'm a TU homer. I will be there Sunday. That said, this isn't good enough. The issues probably go a lot deeper than a malcontent athlete in the post transferring.

Anyone bet against Wojcek being given a one-way ticket to anyplace in two years? Last year they had 20 wins, mainly against small schools that usually play 6-man (sic) basketball in a girls' conference. Now those teams are ranked higher and are defeating the Hurricane (sic.)

The Doug Wojcik era needs to end. Don't get me wrong, the man behind this mess is still John Phillips, but Wojcik just isn't the guy to lead TU out of this epic demolition done by Phillips. People have to understand that John Phillips orchestrated the single biggest destruction of a college sports program in the history of collegiate athletics. There is no doubt in my mind that Phillips is the single worst coach to have ever walked the sidelines or sat on a bench in college sports history. That being said, it doesn't excuse the fact that Doug Wojcik has not improved things. These are desperate times for TU basketball and it's time to thank Wojcik for his effort and show him the door and then make a movement to hire a legitimate college basketball coach who has the ability to do what so many others have done in the past and that is RECRUIT...you can't win without players.

TU has only had three instances of coaches not meeting expectations since the hiring of Nolan; J.D.'s volatile personality meltdowns assuring the chasing away of good recruits and mediocre won-loss records, Phillips' inability to recruit anyone capable of playing Div.1 bball and now poor Wojcik who had to start from scratch and now seems to be paying the price for having no depth. I knew the present program was in serious trouble when he was given an extension for a season of beating some pretty weak teams, in fact the weakest non-conf schedule I can ever remember and I've followed TU for 41 years. Not a realistic appraisal of his ability at all.

Thought I'd brighten your day Picker. I heard Scott Van Pelt mention last night that Neil Everett is going on vacation. Enjoy it while it lasts.

John, my friend, Christmas has come early, what with the news that the Prince of Nerds is going on holiday. Here's where he's probably going: Branson for three weeks.

Never before in sports broadcasting history has anybody as horrible as Everett been given a national microphone. Obviously, the good ones don't want to do Sportscenter, too much work, the good ones want to specialize. So what we have left are parodies -- those two together, it's like two triangle players from the high school band coming back to haunt you.

I have long campaigned to have ESPN list the names of the anchors on the upcoming shows so I won't tune in and see Everett folding his hands just so and yelling what he would yell if only he were cool.

Getting back to TU basketball, these are great points, anybody can win 20. What matters is the size of the crowd. Tournaments. It would seem to be time for a statement of some kind from TU administration about what is expected from this day onward. It is all about recruiting. Unfortunately at TU, there is no margin for error. Coaches are paid tons of money to win. Period. Getting mopped off the floor by ORU and OU: not good. Or is it? Hello? Anybody important out there watching? Thinking?

Is the TU athletic director pleased with the basketball program?

Hopeful?

What about the TU president?

What will be a good year?

What is not good enough?

Is anybody home over there?

Picker, are you trying to start over with a clean(ed) slate?
Is the OU athletic director pleased with the basketball program?

There is no excuse for OU to loose to Stephen F'ing Austin State. None.

Perhaps the same buffoons that show up on 11th to watch Number 197 will buy tickets to the "Can't Spin This Bowl as Anything But What It Is" Bowl in Mobile Alabama. They will be giving tickets away for a canned food item at every street corner. Buy a Cadillac, finance through GMAC, and get 4 free tickets to the........oh Heck, I forgot the name of it again.........

TU's talent is not good. They haven't even been the best program in Tulsa for several years. They need to learn how to identify and get talent like their rivals in south Tulsa have been doing under Scott Sutton. It is sad but the little engine that could, can't anymore.

"These nobody's"...as in the nobody's that spanked OU??

Have TU fans been reduced to hating OU as a highlight of their basketball season?

Is the TU program that bad?

Did OU beat TU 30?

Who said OU was any good, anyway?

TU isn't drawing enough people to pay the light bills.

Was the coach hired to win?

By when?

Come on TU people, own up to reality.

Kenny (5 years ago)
Mr. Picker, we don't hate OU.....It's easy to see that they are better than TU but that's not saying much.....
Honestly, I don't think OU has any chance of making the NCAA tournament either and ultimately that's how ever team is judged in college basketball.
HEY BUBBA, Please make a call to Tubby Smith!!!! When Kentucky was kicking him out last year we should of made room for him at TU then.....

World Picker: 197 ranking...nowhere to go put up...if you're a 'glass half full' fan.

Maybe they spend too much time on academics at TU and not enough time playing BB.

No one cares what happens in round ball until the conference championships/March.
Waste of time. Go bowling. Read a book.
Watch paint dry.
WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
NP, you forgot one other boring activity, watch bowls.
Nit Picker (5 years ago)
World Picker:

Watching bowls may be boring, but they only play them during a two-week period in the winter.

Boring BB drags on from November to the middle of March when the NCAA tournament gets in full swing.

If your team ever goes to a bowl, other than the toilet bowl, the games won't be so boring to you.
