Sooner Coaches Fail Miserably
Published: 9/5/2009 10:35 PM
Last Modified: 9/5/2009 10:35 PM

First TU: It looked okay. Better on defense. Worse on offense. Tulane should give up football. TU needs to open it up.

Next OSU: That's the way you coach defense. To all those stuck on Georgia's big record on the road, guess what, those were different players against different teams. The Georgia quarterback is below average.

Now for the travesty: What the wildly-paid OU football coaches should do is call an emergency meeting and agree to give some money back.

After a lineman is responsible for, oh, 10 or 11 penalties, take him out.

When passes start bouncing off a receiver's head, get him off the field.

Before Bradford was hurt, OU brought back something out of the disco days, some creaky I-formation that was absurdly easy to stuff.

Did the coaches forget Bradford won a Heisman?

Did the coaches even go to fall practice?

Most importantly: All anybody has asked of a Venables defense in a big game is make a play. Win the game. Not two plays. Not four plays. One play. Once in a while. Like when your quarterback is out, when you know they're going to pass, make a play. Against Boise. Oregon. West Virginia. Texas. Florida. Do something. Win the game.

But in how many big games has the OU pass defense under the current regime been caught out of position with the outcome on the line? In all the big games, that's how many. And guess what people, there probably won't be another game this year as big as the one that was just blotched.

The picker is on the mark with this post folks! I agree with every statement.

On a related note...should I put $$$ on TU when they face OU coming up?
This is what I have sent Bob Stoops in a letter every year since Mike Stoops left....

The reason a lot of these teams continue to beat is because they have quality coaches.  Les Miles constantly wooped you inferior players because gave part of his salary to hire good coaches.  Just because someone played at Oklahoma or has been at Oklahoma so long they are antiques does not make them good coaches.  Venenables is a good coach but cant take the team to the level it needs.  Big Game Bob, I am with Lance-a-lot, Im having problems figuring out after losing so many big games, like last year, how you got a pay raise.
With corrections.....

On TU, I felt their defense played well. The offense did not open it up. However, it was Tulane that they were playing against. I expect TU to open it up more as the season goes on and as the new QB gets more experience.

On OSU, Bill Young is one of the top defensive coordinators in the nation. Just look at what he did with the Kansas defense in previous years and with the Miami defense last year. He really mixed up his defenses well.

On OU, the biggest problem with the defensive coaching is the lack of creativity. Every time their is a big third down, the defense always plays base defense (only rushing four men). They seem to run the same defensive plays all the time. Therefore, the offense can predict exactly what the defense is going to do. It is vital to mix up defenses in order to confuse the offense. OU is failing to do that. How OU's defensive staff is still there is beyond me.

Amazingly, Kirk Herbstreit gave Brent Venables a Herbie Award for the assistant that is most ready to be a head coach. Seriously? When was the last time OU had a good pass defense under this defensive coach? I'm just glad I woke up at 11 am on Saturday morning and didn't have to listen to the clowns on Gameday.

Why not get right down to the nub of the problem; Yeah, Venablesis suffering from the Peter Principle expounded beyond its component, but Kevin Wilson is every bit as damaging. Always predictable to the 'nth' degree, Wilson failed to call a time outwhen his quarterback, Jones, who had been floundering before everysnap, continued to show signs of desperate confusion with afourth-and-goal at the two-foot line.  The gaffe resulted, as we allknow, in a game-crucial five-yard delay of game penalty.  When askedafter the game why he had not burned one of Oklahoma's remaining 3 timeouts, he said he had lost track of the clock!  He should have been firedon the spot.  Wilson is also responsible for bringing in James Patton, the offensive line coach.  Patton is an old crony of Wilsons from hisN'wstrn days and, by all accounts from insider sources, is not gettingthe job done on the o-line.  Both Wilson and Patton need to be remindedthat they are no longer coaching at Northwestern.  Indeed, theyshouldn't be coaching at Oklahoma.  Stoops needs to feel heat from themedia but alas, the cheerleaders lead the cheers from the editor's deskin both OKC and Tulsa.

"Kevin Wilson is the weakest Link" he is not creative, he does not know how to use his talent, the no huddle up and down at the line sucks, and when a player is lost to an injury backups are not prepared, he has no game plan. check out Kevin Sumlin, remember him? He's got the Houston Cougars playing some creative, style points, denfensive football. Point is, OU offense needs creative 21st century minds.

Well Pick, one correct lock prediction is better than none, right? Who knew that the new Mizzou QB was going to step up so fast?

Either way, I'm sure you're happy that you stuck with OSU over Georgia. Go Pokes!!!

I agree with the PICKERS comments. Nothing more to say.
MexiMike (3 years ago)
What's that GoldenDriller? No childish digs at OSU? I guess it's hard to talk with all that crow in your mouth.

BYU's game-winning touchdown pretty much sums up the state of pass defense in the clutch under the current staff.

Blown pass coverage in big games is a matter of record.

The BYU receiver was open by approximately 10 yards. This means that Venables, or somebody, had five defenders covering the quarterback sneak, and six defenders on the tight end.

The end zone is only 10 yards deep. Bradford's expression on the sideline pretty much said it all: What was THAT?

The OU defenders actually look pretty terrific. Physically. McCoy is the best. But how can you blow pass coverage game after game after game after game? Yeah, you people are right, the offensive coaching was an embarrassment. But OU still led by six going to the last drive. Make a stinking play.

The staff is starting to look like a good 'ol boys club. Mix in a new face, a new idea once every decade or two, okay?

Cox of OSU is probably the best player in the state.

First up on the firing line is the quarterback's daddy at Colorado.

The announced crowd for the TU game at Tulane was twenty-some thousand. We counted 211.

"Cox of OSU is probably the best player in the state."

Ooooh, I may just buy you a beer for that one, Pick. He has certainly turned the corner in becoming a great coverage back. Still needs a small amount of work on tackling technique though. But combine his defense with his kickoff return talent and you could certainly make a valid case.

One stands in the way, though; the beast that is Dez Bryant.

norsemustang (3 years ago)
Needless to say, that is the last time they schedule a ranked team for opening day.
norsemustang (3 years ago)
You would think that a team with as good a coach as Stoops would be two or three deep at every position.  Since when do you have to move a TE to offensive line?  You would think that with all the blowout victories last year (particularly against Chattanooga) that the entire offensive line would have received some playing experience in those games.
The Picker (3 years ago)
Maybe recruiting depth costs more than the $4 million per year salary, who knows.
BobSmith007 (3 years ago)
The DBs failed to make a play, the play, once again. But, in the end, the defense only gave up 14 points to a pretty good offense on neutral turf. Wilson's the villian. I'm sure the "game plan" made perfect sense in his head. But no reason it shouldn't have been 31-7 at half-time. Establish the run? Good grief, let Mr. Heisman sling it. Up the middle for two? Then it times to try to go up the midde for two again?
nansonf (3 years ago)
You nailed picker, the new QB for the sooners is nothing but a doe eyed lip synce wannabe. At least the special teams didn't allow a kick return, they were not told tp perform subpar football.
The Picker (3 years ago)
With the game on the line, the pass defense was out of place. Again. Period.
MexiMike (3 years ago)
Pick, I have a question. Leading up to the season, everyone (including yourself) was so concerned about Zac going down to an injury and the season being over for OSU if it happened.

All the while, NOBODY said a word about this happening to OU and if they did it wasn't attached with nearly the same doom and gloom.

Was nobody concerned about Bradford's backup(s)?

Seems pretty ironic to me.
Rhymeister (3 years ago)
All those so-called experts were wrong and didn't do their homework with regards to OU and its inexperienced O-line.  Replacing four starters is always going to be tough and it always takes time for a line to jell.  People should have been looking at what the situation was at UGA last season when Matthew Stafford had a very average year and they had to replace four O-line starters.

I guess we thought Sam Bradford was great enough to work around that issue and I'm not blaming the O-line for his injury, that was just a freak thing where he landed wrong but he was getting pressured too much.  No one foresaw, except maybe a BYU fan, OU losing to Brigham Young, ouch.

But OU is in for a tough season I think.  Maybe Landry Jones can grow up in a hurry and get a lot of confidence if he has a good game vs. Idaho State.  I think Tulsa is going to upset the Sooners in two weeks...we shall see.
VermontSooner (3 years ago)
- The O-line is horrible, our QBs were under constant pressure and it's going to be tough for our RB's to COMBINE for 1,000 yards this season behind that line.  How many yards in penalties did they cost Oklahoma?
- Either the coaches or Jones (although I can't really blame Jones) screwed up on what would have been the game winning TD by getting that delay of game penalty.
- Almost the entire first half we tried to run the football, seems like Bradford should have been throwing from the opening bell, at least 20 pass attempts by halftime would be my preference.
- Our receivers were almost as bad as our O-line.  When they did manage to get open, they couldn't catch anything.  I don't want to hear any more about Adron, there's a reason Iglesias/Johnson/ everyone else started ahead of him last year...and where the heck was Madu?  All we've been hearing about is how much we needed to get the ball in Madu's hands - well?

dcood (3 years ago)
Dont pin this one on the defense. I think forcing and recovering a fumble on the one yard line as they did earlier in the game qualifies as a big stop/big play. Holding a top 15 team to 14 should always be enough to win... Maybe someone, anyone on the OU bench should have had their eyes on the play clock and not been trying to audible with the ball at the 6 inch line. Call a play and run it!
Count deMoney (3 years ago)
Is it just me or does it look like when a player is injured his back-up is never prepared to play.  Stoops need to play the back-ups with the first team sometimes.  I for one am never surprised by OU floundering.  I was amazed that the fans at the game looked so surprised when OU lost.  Get used to it people, it happens alot.
soonerguy (3 years ago)
WOW. For once, I agree with the Picker completely. And, there seems to be more common sense thoughts on this board than on the OU coaching staff.
I can't believe this line O-line ever went up against our front seven in practice, otherwise how could they be so horrible, and how could Wilson say he was not concerned for them right before season started. HE BETTER BE CONCERNED NOW.
