Sooners Win Three

The weekend in review:
Beating the Denton Teacher's College was the third best thing to happen to OU Saturday. Miami unveiled its new quarterback, who is as bad if not worse than its old quarterback, neither of whom can run or throw. Miami does have a rapid and wicked defense and a fast tailback. But no passing to speak of.
More importantly, Texas has come to resemble a one-hit wonder. The hitter was Vince Young.
If there is no quarterback controversy at OSU, why is that? You make a big play in a big game or you don't. Try the second-team player.
Maybe you really can't recruit enough defensive stars to a second-tier school to put it to the next level. Sure, you can get a couple or three offensive aces. But six, seven defensive wonders? Doesn't look like it.
Overrated: LSU (average quarterback); West Virginia (average defense); Missouri (defensive joke); ESPN's Mark May (big mouth says nothing); Mike Stoops; anybody who defeats Notre Dame.
Underrated: Washington (slick offense, excellent coach); Nebraska (balanced, bests Missour, K-State).
Coaches feeling heat: Michigan's, Syracuse's, Baylor's, Missouri's, Tennessee's, Arizona's, Notre Dame's.
Several years ago, we predicted that the stunning Maria Sharapova had shockingly ougrown the sport, that she was too attractive and tall to win much more, too attractive, because of demands on her time, and, at six-feet two or three, the go-carts could simply run her off the court. Sadly, it appears that we hit this pick.

Miami is still Miami. In '85 they kind of snuck up on the Sooners. In '86 Miami soundly whipped them. I vividly remember screaming for Bosworth to catch that scrambling Testeverde and slam him to the ground. In the '88 Orange Bowl the Sooners used the fumblerooskie to make the game close. Sure, that was a long time ago but Miami is still Miami and no doubt has some very good players. Some may see their quarterback situation and feel confident about the games' outcome. Not me.

Texas was a one-hit wonder with Vince Young? Geez, ya think? This 'revelation' has been common knowledge to anyone observing Mack Brown on the sidelines since, say, 2000. And what about your Aggies, fella? Best offense in the nation? And now you're clammoring for a quarterback change? I'd better sit down before you come up with another astonishing comment.

Irish seem to have found a charmed one in Weiss. Had that been Ty, they would have already rode him out on a rail. I wouldnt say Weiss is on the hot seat yet...close though. Wait till they struggle over the next 8 games (winning just a few) before it gets warm around the collar.

Steven, I think you're right about Weis. Some of the frosting is gone from the cake. AFter his remarkable first season he shocked the Fathers-in-Charge with high-number losses to Michigan, USC, and LSU his second season (not to mention the 34 points given up to Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl his first year...)and is off to a frightening start in '07. Additionally, his embarrassing lost lawsuit during the off season cast a pall on his administration as well. But after the Willingham controversy, ND won't fire Weis in mid-stream; they'll have to give him more time this year, an more rope to hang himself with. It the Amish do, indeed, tank Good Time Charlie could be heading back to the pros in '08.

Dear WS Smith: Try analyzing before a game for a change.
Your hindsight is 20-200: who won the OU-
Texas game last year?
You and Al and Dean and worked up beating Denton Teacher's College.
Watch out for Tech, pal.
Miami can run. And it seems smart. Short passes, lots of runs, let the defense try to get lucky.

What an incredible, repetitious creature you are. My picks are not in hindsight...check your contest, bud. It's almost comical that your only retort to those who criticise your errant 'picks' is to accuse a person of commenting in hindsight. What crap. Not only my own, but just about all other comments I read in your blogosphere come from folks who have stated opinions up front. And when it comes to picking against you, I went through about twelve of your 'Beat the Picker' t-shirts that I won several season back (most of them are being worn by Salvation Army recipients now...). So, please, get real sir. Oh, and about the NTS loss to OU? I don't remember commenting about that. But if you want to trade expertise on both the meaning of the avalanche or its possible interpretation, you know how to get in touch with me offline.

Dear Smith: What would you like to state up front now?
That you beat the Picker back in 1991?
You couldn't pick a grape.
I went 7-8-1 against the spread last week. It's a good thing. Otherwise you wouldn't have anything to talk about today except the Sooners' big win over Denton Teachers.
Hey Smith, what are your top three picks against the spread this week, huh?
Hello? Anybody home?

Tell you what, my friend, I'll post my three picks Wednesday night before you start swinging at the pinata with your picks on Thursday. I'll post them in whatever blog you happen to have active at the time. This could help you out...you'll have the advantage of reading through mine and modifying yours as needed. That work for you?
WORLDPICKER

If it were not for the Picker, you'd be talking about high school sophomores leaning toward the Sooners. You couldn't pick a flea off chihuahuah.

Dean on line two.
Al on line one.
Stoops' dog-walker on line three.
Post your three picks here. What do the millions of readers get if you don't hit two of three?
Quit punching the same button. Don't be nervous.
WSmith

LoL...nervous? Nah...just intense. They get the satisfaction of seeing the Picker picked off. But I'm not naive enough to suspect that it will, in any way, shape, or form, slow down that jaundiced jaw of yours.

Come on, Ken, we're keeping him off the streets.
Here's something pleasant to think about: Washington obliterating Boise State this weekend!
Captain Stormfield

Mark May? What the hell about Holtz? While I was frantically searching for the remote I heard him insisting that App. State/Mich was NOT an upset. Something about the spread offense and the poor high-schoolish quality of game film provided by App. State. Dude was serious. I guess he really hammered that 27 point spread.

Everyone calm down. The Picker let everyone win the first week, just to keep us interested. That has to be what happened, because no one could be that pathetic on purpose.

We found out that scheduling a 1-AA team is stupid. It's a no win situation. If you are gonna schedule a patty cake, be sure to hammer them by at least 79-10.
Jeremy

We also found out that Georgia is indeed more talented than OSU...especially up front where it counts the most. Until OSU learns to play defense in big games, it won't win them.
Jeremy

And finally, we found out that the OU QB can hit open receivers when he has 5 seconds to throw. Let's see how he does in the face of pressure in a tight ball game. Personally, I think OU has a good one here. Ever notice how the humble, not-so-highly touted ones seem to have the most character and poise?
