Ever wonder when Oklahoma would repay the state of South Dakota for Josh Heupel? Appears that it happened.
Found this in a late summer issue of the Argus Leader, official newspaper of Sioux Falls, a travelog of sorts as the University of South Dakota bussed to West Texas A&M to open its NCAA Division II 2007 season...
"The day leading into the Coyotes' first game was not without some fun. A morning workout on the Oklahoma practice field was followed by a look at some of the Sooners' facilities. Highlighting the morning was a tour of the Sooner locker room led by Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops.
"(South Dakota coach Ed) Meierkort is a friend of Kevin Sumlin, a Sooner assistant coach. Former Aberdeen quarterback -- and Sooner great -- Josh Heupel is also on the Sooners' staff.
"'It's amazing that kids our age play in a place like this,' USD quarterback Noah Shepard said after seeing Memorial Stadium. 'It just makes you thankful that you have the opportunity to go out and play football. I think just being out there and seeing that brought us a little closer together as a football team.'
"On a football front, it was a definite broadening of the horizons that USD would not have been exposed to without suffering through the long bus ride.
"'A lot of people just never see this part of the world,' Meierkort said. 'To have Bob Stoops lead us around was pretty cool. He's probably the third most important guy in Oklahoma, so I'm guessing he's a fairly busy man.'"
