Oklahoma received a verbal commitment over the weekend from San Antonio quarterback Drew Allen, according to recruiting Web site Scout.com.
Allen, a senior at Alamo Heights High School, visited OU recently and attended the Aug. 8 practice. While at the practice, he stood nearby and occasionally interacted as quarterbacks coach Josh Heupel worked with Sam Bradford, Joey Halzle and Landry Jones through various drills. Allen also attended quarterback meetings.
Allen told Scout.com that he received a scholarship offer from OU on July 31. He also had received offers from Oklahoma State, Colorado, Kansas State, Mississippi, Purdue, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest.
The 6-foot-5 ½, 210-pound Allen is rated by Scout.com as a three-star prospect, the No. 37-ranked prep quarterback in the nation. Rivals.com also rates him three stars and lists Allen as the No. 13-ranked pro-style prep quarterback in the country.
Allen, a team captain on his high school team, will be a three-year starter. He recently competed at the Top Gun Showcase Camp outside Orlando, a three-day, invitation-only event at which campers received instruction from former NFL coaches and players.
As a junior, Allen passed for 2,589 yards and 28 touchdowns while rushing for 254 yards and five TDs. He completed 52.4 percent of his passes (174-of-332) with 12 interceptions.
Verbal commitments are non-binding. Prospects can sign letters of intent beginning Feb. 4, 2009.
