Sorry conspiracy theorists: Missouri's Haith not coach of year
Published: 3/17/2012 11:04 AM

Kansas' Bill Self and Iowa State's Fred Hoiberg shared coach of the year honors in the Big 12.

Immediately, conspiracy theorists (and myself) wondered if league coaches snubbed Missouri's Frank Haith because of the obvious -- the Tigers are leaving the conference to join the SEC.

Missouri loyalists cried foul because they felt Haith was slighted. Haith got "justice" when he was voted the Big 12's coach of the year on the media version of the All-Big 12 team.

BUt, upon further review, it looks like the coaches got it right and the media got it wrong.

Teams coached by Self and Hoiberg advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Haith's team -- a No. 2 seed -- flamed out with a first-round loss to first-time NCAA Tournament participant Norfolk State. It was a puzzling defeat because the Tigers start four seniors. Due to the seniority factor (few major college teams are senior-laden because the best players leave early for the NBA), I had picked Mizzou to go to the national championship game. Oops.

The best two reasons I can think of for Missouri bowing out early: 1, Tournament games are all about match-ups and Norfolk State was a bad match-up for the Tigers. 2, Karma. Memphis, Missouri, West Virginia and San Diego State are leaving their conferences for alleged greener pastures. They all lost first-round NCAA Tournament games.
