Spoil Sports? Spoiled Sports?

Somebody said it's normal for TU to draw 5,000 to its basketball games this year.

Before getting into how embarrassing and disrespectful that is, this note: People who get in free don't get to complain about paying customers. We have been to a number of TU hoop games, and fork over ticket cash every time.

That the TU field house has been running on fumes this season is a disgrace.

Why aren't more people going?

Is the team not yet trusted because it has a habit of losing so many road games?

Is the style of play fan-unfriendly?

Too few local or area players?

A lack of big star quality?

A personality conflict with the coach?

The economy?

Iffy conference/home foes?

This season, it itsn't a case of what comes first, the chicken fans or the wins -- TU is winning, it obliterated Oklahoma State.

What's wrong with you people?

Agree 100% with you. Although it has begun to pick up recently.

Isn't there a way for you to blame it on the spread offense, Pick?  And no mention of Phil Simms?  I think that's a first.
MexiMike (3 years ago)
Pick, are you serious? You know why fans aren't showing up. Everyone knows why but they won't say it.

Tulsa people are apathetic towards sports. It's the reason why NONE of our sports teams are successful. Tell me the last time a Drillers, Oilers, Talons, or 66ers game sold out. Tell me the last time one had a great attendance without having to give away tons of free tickets.

TU football and basketball are no different. People may say that they "would love to go" but they aren't going. Not for $10, not for $5, not for free.

It's the reason why the WNBA will fail (among countless other reasons) and why other professional teams stay away from here.

It's crappy but it's true. Complain, scream, pull your hair out, but things will never change in this city.

People arent going because of what you just mentioned... it costs money to go these functions. Take a family of 4 to college hoops game--easily $175. In case you havent noticed, times are tough. God forbid people would forego something as special as TU basketball...
BLA (3 years ago)
Dcood...You can take a family of 4 to a TU game for $40...if you buy food, maybe $65.  There are loads of $10 tickets in the Reynold's Center.

MexiMike has it right.  Tulsa is a mall walking, American Idol watching town.  Don't get up off the couch and do something folks.  There's a reason why Oklahoma ranks 49th in fattest citizens.

I know I am one of the rare one's that tries to go to at least 2-3 Oilers games, 1-2 Talons games, and a couple of Drillers games each year.  I also go to EVERY TU home football and basketball game as well as several ORU basketball and baseball games.

Get off your duffs people and get out and see some of the world.

BLA  is right, it's just the attitude of the city -- tulsa will never support a professional or college team like it should  - why do you think there are so many restaurants in tulsa?? cause this is all that tulsans like to do, go out to eat on friday, saturday nights - go to a movie every once and awhile and that's it -- which is why tulsa can't get any big time concerts (outside of country acts or has beens rock groups, ie the eagles) - cause they don't support any type of entertainment, period
C SQUARED (3 years ago)
Tulsans want everything and support nothing a very fickle town indeed
dcood (3 years ago)
BLA: are you serious... you going to all these games is somehow getting you in some sort of shape? What do you do at games??? Sit on you a-- last time I checked. Get a life and do something productive besides go to Tulsa area athletic contests... Talons, Oilers... you runnin for mayor?
Glenn616 (3 years ago)
MexiMike and BLA, you're correct. Tulsa doesn't support its sports teams. They can't even sell out a 30,000 seat football stadium. TU had trouble getting sellouts at basketball games when Tubby Smith and Steve Robinson were coaching at TU. The fans are just plain apathetic.
The Picker (3 years ago)
Bad sports town?

Nonsense.

When Self was here, and Tubby, you couldn't get a seat.

Soccer even drew well when it won.

What's the definition of a bad sports town? A town with bad teams. Or a town with lousy fans.

The WNBA is not quite a mainstream league.
College basketball is. For a winning TU team to play with a third or quarter empty building indicates that this town is a little too uppity for its own good. I know TU grads who haven't been to a single basketball game.

The coach and players deserve much better.

Imagine trying to recruit for a winning team nobody cares about.

I think it is parking. If Tulsans can't park ten steps from the door they won't go.
The Picker (3 years ago)
Senor, actually, that's a serious point with many.

At most TU games, you see guards guarding empty parking lots! There are few on-campus lots open to the public. Half-empty gyms, you'd think they'd pay fans to show up and park.
The Picker (3 years ago)
One final thought on the TU athletic situation, basketball in particular.

It seems few people care much.

So don't complain.

End of story.
huricandeoro (3 years ago)
Picker, I would think that if a person is one of the people who do "care much" then they have a right to complain.
cowboytimothy (3 years ago)
A question: Where is the closest area near the Reynolds Center that a non-season ticket holder can park? A few of us are planning to make the 6 pm game tomorrow night with Tigers, was curious where the available public spots were?
transplant2Tulsa (3 years ago)
Picker, not sure what that last comment meant but seems like it's the responsibility of those that do care for TU to engage folks that are not active.
Attendance is an issue at all but the very top collegiate programs.  All number of media options, increased entertainment options, tighter budgets...you name it.
richboy49 (3 years ago)
Being a strong TU supporter, I have 2 observations. 1:  TUs advertising dollar should either be increased or spent differently, in order to reach the regular population. 2:  The local media generally never puts TU first when reporting sports. Its always OU, OSU or something else. When the media quits treating TU like a redheaded step child maybe the public will too.
The Picker (3 years ago)
Richboy, interesting.....you know, media coverage is based on a couple of things.....the number of interested readers/viewers, and success. But attendance for a winner should be a given. As mentioned, I know a lot of TU grads who haven't been to a single game this season.

Cowboy, that's a problem, all right. Somebody said the closest free parking lot is over by the event-center building. Which holds a limited amount of cars.

Transplant, if TU grads won't go to games, what's going to attract anybody neutral? This quick note: Texas to the Ivy League? Texas to the Big Ten is the stupidest thing we've heard all morning. And it's been a pretty dumb day. Texas wants to zip its badminton team, etc., up to Minnesota? Laughable.
huricandeoro (3 years ago)
You can park along the streets in most of the neighborhoods near the stadium.
cowboytimothy (3 years ago)
Thanks Picker and Deoro for the info..
FrankJenks (3 years ago)
Our family stopped going due to the pricing.
A required $600 "donation" for season ticket holders.  Add the cost of the tickets, plus the 3 exhibiton games, and you are spending over $100 a game just to get in.  That includes the games against Podunk A & M, with a final score of 103- 39. That is some mighty expensive entertainment!  So yes, if they are not winning more will not go.   We could not afford it wither way.
WillyJ (3 years ago)
You answered your own question Picker. .

Self, Tubby, and Nolan were successful here both in putting winning teams on the court that could compete nationally and maintaining fan interest.

So what's the difference between those guys and Wojcik?

I don't think it's that they are necessarily better basketball coaches, I think it's that while they insisted on their kids playing sound, aggressive defense, they also gave their teams the freedom to play aggressive, creative, and entertaining offense.

Their philosophy was to run, push the ball, wear down opponents, score in bunches, and bury the opposition if they got the chance.

Fair or not, the perception of Wojo is that he wants to put all the effort on defense; slow the game down and limit possessions; and hopefully battle through enough 8 to 10 minute scoring droughts to grind out enough 52-48 wins over Tulane and Marshall to get another CBI home game.

Probably unfair, but that's the perception and he'll never get the players or fan support to turn things around unless he makes a big change in his coaching philosophy, which he won't.

When the local cable company will show every other team in the nation but yours because test patterns are more entertaining then watching your team play, you either need to change or a change needs to be made.

Wojo has had 5 years; no NCAA's this year and he needs to go.
