Sports Talk Hilarity

You can tell who is listening to sports talk radio in a car.
The driver is laughing.
I laughed out loud twice yesterday.
First, some local sports talk radio guys working out of Oklahoma City gave their opinions about next year's OU basketball team.
Here's all you need to know about in-state sports talk radio: Oklahoma State and Tulsa are treated like bright purple-haired step-children. In any sport, OU is king and prince, it is royalty; even if the defensive coordinator at football did land it on the wrong side of a classic low-light, a highlight for Boise.
Even Oklahoma State people on the radio seem to wind up with serious crushes on the Sooners.
Anyway, here is the outlook for OU's basketball team next year. It is more or less the same outlook for OU football: Very, very, very, very greatly superb.
Big laugh number two came from Pat Jones, one of a few on that radio network who doesn't stand when Boomer Sooner is played. Coach Pat was talking about college basketball and said that the OU and South Carolina head coaching jobs were about the same.
South Carolina basketball? Who knew it still had a team? Even if your family of 20 lived Mossburg, S. C., four blocks from the basketball gym, the OU job is about ten times better!
Fasten your seat belt before putting on the radio, people.

In related news, the Picker's blog on the Tulsa World website is nothing more than destination number one for those of you who love to pout when someone has a positive (or even non-negative) comment about anything revolving around the University of Oklahoma.
Are you trying to provide some sort of weak attempt at a "checks and balances" with sports talk radio? Or are you doing the same thing sports radio is doing, just in reverse order? I think it's the latter, not the former.
Or are you just hissed because Sittler's on the radio and you're not, and because he was named Oklahoma sports writer of the year for the billionth time in a row? Don't be jealous...that's like being the smartest kid on the short bus.
Maybe it all boils down to the fact that no one on radio even acknowledges your existence, not even your supposed colleague there at the fish wrap. Do tell.

BTW, Pat Jones coached, lived, and breathed football for about a hundred years. So take anything he says about basketball (or any topic other than football, for that matter) with a grain of salt.
When that man talks football, I listen. When talks "other" I change it to something a little more soothing on XM, like Laura Ingraham or something. Nothing like a smart-aleck, attractive, condescending woman with her own nationally syndicated radio show.

JB, you're funny as local sports talk radio!
The Picks sometimes does global radio, not local. We write for other continents.
This just in: the OU women's basketball team next year?
Greater than great.
JB, quick, put on the radio, they're going to predict the OU softball outlook. Rumor has it: Just plain great.
OU Spring football? Don't ask. Greater than the greatest great spring ever.
JB

The only job OU basketball is better than right now is the one at OSU (that's OKLAHOMA State). Wouldn't hate the man if he left to go anywhere, given the fact there are 12 or 13 Sooner fans who know more players' names than Blake and Taylor Griffin. Coach Capel says, "Willie Warren," and most OU fans say, "running back or wide receiver?"
Just an honest observation from an OU fan.
Matthew

Why is it hilarious that someone would express optimism about the future of OU basketball? They have a potential NBA 1st rounder returning in Blake Griffin, an improving Tony Crocker, UCLA transfer Ryan Wright, and a couple of very highly touted recruits including Willie Warren.
Am I saying OU is going to win the conference? Do I think OU has the potential next year to take another step in getting to where Capel wants them to be? Absolutely. If OU can beat Missouri on Saturday, they will have made a 3 game improvement in conference play from last year to this year. From 6-10 to 9-7. If they can improve again next year, who knows, maybe they're looking at 11-5. I think Capel has this program on the right track, and I fail to see anything funny about that. Maybe I'm wrong.
JB

Picker, that was weak. Next time there's a writers' guild strike, you should let me write your comedic pieces for you. Whoever is doing it now is just plain lame at it.
Wonder what the over/under was on the number of OSU students primed and ready before the Bedlam game Wednesday to rush the court after the final buzzer of their seemingly emminent double-digit victory.
Chris
Gifffin is projected on ESPN now as a top 10 pick in the draft. With his injuries and such, I think he may leave.
He says he won't, but don't think that he won't change his mind pretty quick. Top 10 in the draft, or half-empty Lloyd Noble? He should have been a Jayhawk.
chris
And JB, why would OSU rush the court after beating a 7-7 team at home? You can't really think OU is so good that they were gonna rush the court. Wasn't gonna happen.
I wonder what the over/under is on OU football fans who think they know about OU basketball, speaking of Pat Jones from your post below.
You OU fans remind me of some KU basketball fans I know. They know everything about KU basketball, but could care less about football until they were good last year. Now, switch that around and put "OU" instead of "KU" in that first sentence. It fits, I promise.
And the Picker is actually fairly correct with the OU predictions for every sport. You should try listening objectively sometime. Its good to do that.

Matthew, the point is that according to some, according to many, OU is always getting to be ready to be great at everything.
Which might not be possible.
Is it against the law to say that the OU quarterback might possibly have a speed issue? Is it evil to suggest that the freshman OU basketball player might have a spot of trouble in the NBA without, say, a shot?
Sports can be fun when viewed objectively. Not always. But at least once in a while.

OSU FAN IN TULSA

Spot on, Mr. Picker. Leader of the band of fools on Sports Urinal is Al Eschbach (sp?). What a loon.
I'd say more, but Josh Jarboe has me at gunpoint...
Matthew

It's not illegal to say anything when you're a journalist...almost. Hey, I'm not sitting here saying Blake Griffin is going to be Karl Malone in the NBA. I'm saying he's a pretty darned good college player, and I'm 85% sure he's coming back for another year, so with he and what OU has coming back/coming in they should be improved against next year. They are making steady progress. Great? I don't know about that. Nor do I really care.
As for Bradford, I am not sold on the fact that he will even be the starter at OU in two years. He started out the year on fire, but he quickly cooled down the stretch. It seemed as his protection broke down, and Kelly was battling injuries, he tailed off considerably. OU now has two guys with a lot of potential behind him (Nichol and Landry Jones), so Bradford is going to have to bring it to remain the starter. People who are annointing him as Troy Aikman need to keep things in check.
I try not to pay much attention to things that are said on Tulsa sports talk radio. There are homers from all sides of the spectrum if you listen closely:
Jerkins: All things Tulsa
Eschbach, various others: OU
Robert Allen: blatantly obvious

Listening to OKC radio (I live in OKC) makes you long for The Buzz. It's horrible. I have never heard so many dumb callers and hosts that aren't prepared to give quality takes. Seriously, any show that does nothing but take calls is not worth listening too. The Animal is stinky.

OU basketball should have been hit with sanctions from Mr. Sampson's misadventures. Its amazing the crap that whole school gets away with - going all the way back to Barry Switzer's boys and their automatic weapon misadventures back in the day.
You would think that David Boren would run a cleaner house than this.

Chris:
What do you want to know about OU basketball? Ask me. You'll get an answer. And in case you didn't read all the post, I'll let you know I knocked fellow Sooner fans for not following the basketball team as well as they follow the football team. But you probably read as far as you wanted and then quit to make your own post. There are very few of us that actually know much about the team. I already said as much, so relax.
To answer your question about rushing the floor after wins, I'd venture to say OSU leads the country in this statistic (if there is such) for the last 4 or so years. Beating a KU team that is highly ranked and very good is one thing. But rushing the floor after beating teams in OT or that happen to be as eqaully good as them is a little ridiculous. I remember a couple years ago when the OSU football fans deleriously tore down goal posts almost weekly, and that delerium found its way to the basketball fans. They seemed to rush the court after random innocuous victories over conference opponents when the game was either closer than it should have been or when OSU squeaked out a victory in typical underachieving fashion.
To wit...when was the last time KU rushed the floor? KU's a basketball school, and EXPECTS to win games at home, no matter whether they're in a down year and playing a better team or if they win a close one. It simply doesn't happen but once in a blue moon: OSU fancies itself a basketball school. Rushing the floor should be reserved for beating a team for the first time in 25 years, or when you're a mid-major and beat a big-timer. Not when you win a conference game at home. I wonder if the students would have come onto the floor if the team had won last year's NIT game versus Marist. One never can tell.
If you are one of those that beleive you are infinitely smarter than anyone on the radio, don't listen to that radio station. There are many to choose from. When I don't like what's being said, I change it. I don't continue to sit like a captive and then come onto a newspaper message board and complain about it. Nor do I write a blog about the same.
If a newspaper bloggist has nothing to say other than to take a cheap shot at a group of radio hosts, they must be really lacking for topics of their own to write. It was, in fact, the Picker himself who proclaimed the OSU basketball team the best in the state. There was no evidence to support this claim, as it was simply his opinion, which is fine and dandy. But for he and his cronies to take a radio station to task for doing the same is beyond funny, witty, or creative. It's sad. But I reserve no pity. You're free to say whatever you choose. And I am free to agree or disagree. So long as either of us has any substantiation to what we say, this thing will continue on with even, healthy debate. When we dismiss people for disagreeing and give no basis, we'll only be left with like-minded opinions and trollers looking to jab and leave, watching the bickering that follows. If I have nothing to say about a blog (even if I disagree with what's been said), I do not post. I post very seldomly. But when I do, there's always explanation for what I think.
By the way, I can't stand Dean Blevins. I prefer John Holcomb and an very happy I live in Tulsa where I can tune him in instead of his counter-part in OKC. I don't mind Al Jerkins. He's fine. Eschbach is fun because he's a dork. Traber is okay until he talks about how great he is/was. Morning animals=waste of time. In-state sports talk is way, way behind rest of the country. Which is why I don't listen to it that often. The only difference between Picker and the loons on the radio is the medium they use. But I don't call the radio station because I can't stand listening to callers on the air. Taking calls on a radio station says you don't have much to talk about otherwise. Kinda like complaining about the radio on the internet (gosh, what's that say about me?).
But, Mr. P

Come on now JB, you are going to tell me that OSU rushes the court all the time because of the texas game last year? Funny.
I would imagine you were not there, and could not understand how intense that game was. It was also the game of the year in college basketball last year according to ESPN. They were both ranked and went back in forth for three overtimes.
And what games were you talking about as far as football? Sounds to me like you see us rush the court once during a game YOU think we should not have, and you just assume. Same with football. We tore down the goalposts when beating OU in 2002, and Nebraska (who we beat for the first time in like 15 years) in 2003 or 2004.
Your crimson goggles clearly prevent you from looking at a situation in any other way but pro-OU, anti-OSU. As an OSU fan, I will tell you that I do lean more pro-OSU. However, I cheer for both schools and know when I am wrong on an OSU issue.
The point is, you are way over your head on this rushing the court thing. Just because OU never does, doesnt mean that OSU shouldn't either. OU just doesn't care about college basketball. OSU fans are intense about it, and if we rush the court one time more then we should, then that is fine with me.

Mr. World Picker,
Thanks for an honest take on “sports talk” radio in Oklahoma. It is readily apparent to an objective listener which school is the “greatest”.
Because of the rabid nature of the sooner groupies that make up an apparent majority of the listeners it is understandable why even those with no ties to OU tend to display crushes on the sooners, the want to keep their jobs. Those such as Blevins, Rhode, B. Tramel, and Eschbach support their school and Big Al knows enough to stay out of harms way.
Because you not a Sooner Toady you will always be scorned, but just remember the old story of The Emperor’s New Clothes. Few will stand up and tell the truth.

Wow. That was beautiful, A. Jones. Seldom have I seen such an artistic job of butt kissing than that which was displayed in your last blog. You've taken brown nosing to an entirely new level.
Arthur

JB,
You obviously have no idea about OSU rushing the court. I have been to EVERY basketball game in the past four years at GIA and we rushed the court three times. Twice for beating a ranked Texas team(once for winning a triple overtime thriller that is still talked about. I know you guys get tired of always seeing the national highlights for a game you lost to Boise.) Also, anytime a non-ranked team beats a top five team in a thriller like this year, the fans should storm the court. We haven't torn down the goal posts in years and it was reserved for beating powerhouses like OU, NU, and Texas. If we win Bedlam this year I would imagine they would come down. However, OU is not considered to be that big of a deal in basketball. I've seen OSU beat OU three times over the past four years in basketball and not once did we storm the court.
To bring this disjointed series of examples together, you apparently don't realize that many schools do the same as we do. In fact I would say this shows passion for the game and willingness to celebrate big wins. We don't believe passion is ripping the genitals from an opposing fan. We would rather celebrate, like many other schools, than be so incredibly negative.

"Real American Heroes.
We salute you, Mr. Unathletic Sports Talk Radio Guy, who knows everything there is to know about sports, except how to play them.
For 8 hours a day you talk about nothing but sports, which is 7 hours and 45 minutes longer than anyone listens."
Craig Monroe

Picker rules. He's the only guy who tells it like it is and most of you all don't like to hear it because its true. He's the dose of reality that's needed in a state full of mediocre media. Most of the scribes, radio hacks and talking heads around here are only blessed with two neurons and for the most part they're fighting each other for one solitary thought.
