Springing Forward to Football

Is it too early to start talking college football?
Now that TU has released its schedule, here are the games that college football fans in our state can look forward to:

Aug. 30: OSU vs. Washington State in Seattle; Chattanooga at OU.
Quick thought: The Cowboys have an extremely interesting opener. Like last season, they open on the road against a BCS league opponent. Unlike last season, the opponent doesn't have Georgia's fangs.

Sept. 6: Tulsa at North Texas; Houston at OSU; Cincinnati at OU.
Quick thought: Tulsa and OSU play the kind of opponents they need to beat in order to have the kind of seasons they want to have. It will be interesting to see if Houston will continue to be a C-USA beast minus former coach Art Briles, who will try to spin straw into gold at Baylor.

Sept. 13: Missouri State at OSU; OU vs. Washington in Seattle.
Quick thought: If the Sonics are coming to Oklahoma City, then why shouldn't the Cowboys and Sooners both go to Seattle for college football games during the 2008 season. The only time I was there (when Adam Morrison hit a prayer to beat the Cowboy hoops squad), I didn't discover the really cool fish market area until just before it was time to go home.

Sept. 20: New Mexico at Tulsa.
Quick thought: Lobos assistant coach Matt Wells, who coached at TU under Keith Burns and Steve Kragthorpe, gets to return to his home state. Wells is from Sallisaw.

Sept. 27: Central Arkansas at Tulsa; Troy at OSU; TCU at OU.
Quick thought: Revenge games lurk for the Cowboys, who lost at Troy last season, and the Sooners, whose season-opening loss to TCU a few years back cost Paul Thompson the starting quarterback job.

Oct. 4: Rice at Tulsa; Texas A&M at OSU; OU at Baylor.
Quick thought: Can Todd Graham and TU forgive the MOB (Marching Owl Band) or will the sour notes linger?

Oct. 11: Tulsa at SMU; OSU at Missouri; OU vs. Texas.
Quick thought: This is bad timing for a TU-SMU game in Dallas. Contact the schedule makers and change the date now. With the Red River War going on in the same city on the same day, TU-SMU will fly way under the radar.

Oct. 18: UTEP at Tulsa; Baylor at OSU; Kansas at OU.
Quick thought: Too bad we didn't get to see a Kansas-OU game last season.

Oct. 25: OSU at Texas; OU at Kansas State.
Quick thought: Maybe the Cowboys need to let Texas jump out to a big lead this time instead of vice versa.

Oct. 26: UCF at Tulsa.
Quick thought: Are you ready for some Sunday football? The Knights and Golden Hurricane, who met in last year's C-USA title game, will play on a day normally reserved for the pros.

Nov. 1: Tulsa at Arkansas; Iowa State at OSU; Nebraska at OU.
Quick thought: Tulsa vs. Arkansas should occur on a regular basis, with an occasional game played this side of Siloam Springs.

Nov. 8: Tulsa at UAB; OSU at Texas Tech; OU at Texas A&M.
Quick thought: Too bad all of the state squads are on the road simultaneously, but this could be a huge Saturday for the Cowboys and Sooners.

Nov. 11: Tulsa at Houston; OSU at Colorado.
Quick thought: Boulder in mid-November could be frosty.

Nov. 22: Tulane at TU; Texas Tech at OU.
Quick thought: However many fans TU draws for this game, it will be infinitely more than Tulane drew for a home game against TU last season. There were more people on the field than in the stands at the Superdome.

Nov. 29: Tulsa at Marshall; OU at OSU.
Quick thought: Bedlam tends to be dramatic in Stillwater.

Quick thought . Why not move Tulsa at SMU to Friday night and maybe capture some of the OU fans down for the Texas game. Besides, no one goes to high school football games in the Dallas area.

You are correct Mr. Tramel---Bedlam will be very interesting this year. Bring on the landthieves!

That's a good piece, Jimmie.

Even though I don't wait hungrily for OU & OSU news ... I enjoyed your take on what lies in store for them.

I wish there were a "perfect" schedule for TU, but we just don't live in that world. I think it's probably about the best we can do under all the circumstances.

It also looks like a high potential for a table run. (With fingers crossed)

Since OU-Texas is always at 2:30, TU-SMU should kick off at 8 PM. This would give the OU fans a chance to have a victory dinner and then head over to Ford Stadium to cheer on TU.
