Every bowl has its Battle of the Bands. The Sun is no different, and that's unfortunate for Oklahoma.
Just outside this morning's head coaches press conference in downtown El Paso, the Leland Stanford Junior University Marching Band administered one of the worst beatings in OU's bowl history.
It wasn't really the Pride of Oklahoma's fault. They showed up, played strong and were very well-organized. They belted out "Oklahoma!" to start with and sounded fine.
Then Stanford's band started playing Green Day. Every member danced as energetically as he/she played. The drum major, dressed like the Cowboy from the Village People as a shot to OU, was in a frenzy. So was Stanford's famous Tree mascot.
Some of the band's members looked to be in their 70s. One dude played a banjo... with no strings. One of the tubas had Felix The Cat painted on it, another had what definitely appeared to be a marijuana leaf.
For the next 45 minutes or so, the Pride played something and fans gathered around applauded politely. Then the LSJUMB answered and folks were mostly in awe. I'm not sure a lot of them knew how to react.
My reaction: The Pride needs to loosen up a little.
