Stoops Bruises the Bank
Published: 2/21/2008 2:52 PM

With an annuity kicking in, Medium Game Stoops could collect $6 million next year.

We are whole-heartedly in favor of Stoops making more than the meaningless science and literature profs earn, probably combined.

You think anybody will pay $75 some lovely fall afternoon to watch eggheads do math?

It only averages out to something like $700 per waking or sleeping hour, for Pete's sake.

You don't like it, how about this, go watch Arkansas football.

One minor question.

Does the $6 mil meant that this is the year we'll win a non-cheesy bowl game?

Boomer Sooner, baby.

PS: Send money.

6 milion to lose bowl games every year? That is pretty sad. One more flop in a big bowl and we can officially call him "big lame Bob".

Zach - That's original. Not.

Stoops is the best coach in the Big 12. As for bowl games, you can't when them all. You'd like to, though. When people bring up salary, it just means they're jealous. However, the Picker wouldn't have anything to write about if sports weren't as big as it is. How about we change our outlook and find some positive things to write about. I'll just tune in to the news for some negativity.

6 million is a lot of coin! How many more years do you think Stoop Dog will be at OU? I think we are closer to him leaving than we are to when he came.
Epphan (5 years ago)
Llama: Why would he leave? Six mil and he doesn't even have to win a bowl game.

Jimbo (5 years ago)
I hear his St Patrick's Day bonus could push it to $7 million.

Carrying it out a little more, Stoopsie is only making $12 per minute.

Twenty cents per second, $12 a minute, $700 per hour, $6 mil for the year, who says that's too much to pay somebody who can beat everybody in the Big 12 except Colorado and Texas Tech.

Don't get me wrong, Thomas, I'm on the bandwagon, I'm in the fourth Rolls from the rear on the Stoops parade.

I love reading the posts of the haters....why don't you guys just quit watching sports altogether. Just by viewing a game I think you are giving your approval and time and money to those teams and in essence helping to pay that coaches salary.

OU could offer 10 million a year and hire the best football coach available on the planet but that would still not guarantee a national championship team or a BCS bowl victory every year. There are too many intangibles to guarantee that sort of success.

I wonder what they think of Tressel in Ohio? He lost two big ones in a row.

I think head football coaches are paid more than the smartest and most respected professors in every single university in the country, not just in Norman USA. Is it fair to the teachers? Not at all. Has a professor ever quit because of this unbalanced financial compensation? I doubt it.

In my opinion, college coaches, pro athletes, actors, rock stars, plastic surgeons, lawyers and school superintendents are all paid more than they are worth.

In this country, for better or worse, you are paid based on the revenue/profits you generate. Bob Stoops generates a hell of a lot more revenue than a teacher. Hence he makes more. A lot more. Like it or not, that's capitalism.
GUS (5 years ago)
Actually, Stoops makes more than 60 "meaningless" science or literature professors. Stoops is great coach but for the people of this great State not to see a problem with this makes me sad. Student athletes come to play for OU, not for Bob. Graduate students come to OU to specifically work with some of those "meaningless" professors. OU football for all its glory will not make this state or nation better, OU graduates will.

Having read many of the "pickers" columns, he could well use some additional time under those "meaningless" literature professors. I'm not an OU professor but I wish I were one even more that I would like to be an OU coach. GO student!

Well said, Gus.

I love Bob. He's my hero. They can't pay him enough. I have a serious man crush on him. Please don't talk bad about him. He's a GOD!!
GUS (5 years ago)
Matthew stated "In this country, for better or worse, you are paid based on the revenue/profits you generate." I'm sorry but the CEO club is great example of reward not linked to performance or market equilibrium, ENRON anyone? Bob's salary, (I'm a Stoops fan by the way) is a product of an arms race that has nothing to do with his direct impact on OU budgets.

Zach: was that you I saw on your Vespa going through the drive-thru at McDonalds, or is the circus back in town?

Epphan: Going 6-6 and winning the Toilet Bowl is worth a lot more than what they are paying Gumby over at Stoolwater, for sure. Make a bigger contribution to Boone State
University, please.

World Picker: I know you are jealous of anyone who makes more money than you do, hence you are jealous of about everyone except your minions; but your hate is beginning to take on the odor of an obsession.

Why don't you try to write something sometime besides third grade math. Your drivel seems to be attracting mostly the weak and infirm and I am getting a bit bored with them.

Oh, and I wager you have never seen the inside of a Rolls, much less driven one.
I have. They are nice. (Much nicer than a Vespa, Zach.)

World Picker should be required to identify himself and own up to his hate and childish drivel, or be fired.

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
