Stoops: Peaking or Peaked?
Published:

It's hard to believe that it's been eight-plus years since OU defeated Florida State to win a national championship.
Numerous things happened to make the championship possible.
Heupel was magical.
The defense attacked.
Florida State was vastly overrated.
Will Stoops win another national championship?
Reasons for:
He's a great recruiter.
He's a fierce competitor and is probably getting tired of hearing the Medium Game Bob business.
He has embraced the quarterback pass game, not the quarterback run-pass game, which is more dangerous to the offense than the defense.
Reasons against:
Is he loyal to a fault to his coordinators?
The defense thinks too much.
The defense has lacked a game-changing playmaker.
The BCS voters are probably getting tired of all the big bowl losses.
Suggested changes:
Display sense of humor.
Hire somebody new.
Beat Texas for a pleasant change of pace.

All big time coaches are "fierce competitors" and other coaches have won a bogus "nat'l championship" then sat out a while. Beating Texas is only important because whoever gets there most usually has to beat everyone they play. Bradford as a junior is the most important element. The defense did very well against the overrated Tebow bunch last year after giving up way too many points in some games, but they still got to the big show. Bradford will pull them through. He's the real deal.

One word: Cornerbacks. What position has failed the most miserably in big games? I think last year proved you can outscore "almost" everyone. You might mix in some corner speed to beat everyone.

"Overrated Tebow bunch?" How can the national champion team be overrated?
My definition of overrated is consistently getting voted to big BCS games and then losing. Ignatz, what team would fit that definition of overrated?

Defense win championships but if the offense can't get a touchdown on 1st & goal from the 2 in a tight defensive battle....
The current OC needs to go !!!!
The offense that scored at a record pace last year was being ran from the QB on the field who was instructed & coached by the assistant QB coach on the sideline who should be the OC in the first place....
Remember they scored 56 points in the first half against K-st but only 3 in the second half when they went into a more northwestern style offense....
Against Cinncinati, OU moved up & down the field but then came to a halt when the guy in the booth wanted more control, same thing against Florida when the whole offense had to wait for the signal from the "coach" in the skybox....
OU will lose that QB coach in the near future because he isn't getting the status & recognition of OC that he deserves....Those head coaches in Lubbock & Tucson sure know who he is....

Remember two(2) seasons ago when the head coach and the OC couldn't figure out who the best running back on the team was ????
All that RB did was save the day against Texas and his reward was to become a special teams player fulltime....Didn't he almost lose his football career with a special teams injury ????
If the OC can't judge and decide who his BEST running back is then I guess I won't be suprised when the next phenom RB has to ride the bench because the warhorse beatup RB has earned his PT even though he can't hit the hole like he used to when he was a freshman....

tulsandn, can I sit up in the coaches booth with you next season. It sounds like fun to be sitting up there with headphones on knowing exactly what's going on with the team...
Stogdiddy

Or maybe, just maybe, you weren't up in the coaches booth, and "The offense that scored at a record pace last year" has nothing to do with who called what plays, rather it was because they were doing it against some absolutely horrendous (SP?) defenses (OSU, TT, Mizzou, etc...)!
But What Do I Know?
Picker - Some of these guys need to update their resumes, they're obviously not in the right profession. Unless their coaching football, that is.

But What Do I Know: This is the first team of responders.
BSmith is right on the money: Cornerbacks are the key to big time college football. Find the best high school teams in the country, the corners are 5 feet, 5, 160; virtually all the great college corners are converted, probably the most from wide receiver, taller guys who can move.
It does seem like something of a closed society at OU in terms of the coaching staff, doesn't it.
Concerning the note about Heupel, the qb coach, that's probably an accurate thought. It's hard to believe he's been around this long; because every year, quarterback is a strong position.

7 Big 12 teams recruiting the state of Texas and most getting the ones Mack Brown doesn't want. Going to have to do something different. Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result won't work.

This will be Stoops last year at OU. Interestingly we (yes i'm an OU grad) have a decent shot again, if we're faster than last year on "D"
buster

If speed was number 1 priority, coachs would have recuited from track teams. Good wide receivers will not go to a college to play defense. They want to be on offense and score points.

Here in Oklahoma we have sooners bashing cowboys, cowboys bashing sooners, hurricane fans just dying to be noticed anytime anywhere and what else ???? Not much else really....
So same song different lyrics can't be helped, so basically the Picker can't help but be that "can't touch this" guy doing his chinese typewriter dance in his diaper pants day-in day-out....It ain't his fault....can't touch this....
The Picker

When the truth is considered to be bashing, it's time for some of you guys to have your minds examined.
The Stoops countdown to either another national championship, or to another BCS bowl loss, is a great story.
Ignatz

The Tebow team won the mythical "NC" because they played OU, perhaps the fourth best team in the country at that time. Meaningless speculation, but so what?
Gene M
Mr. Picker, I see where there is a new code of conduct for athletes who are good enough to play for Stoops. In effect, you can't have killed anyone with your own firearm. How pathetic can you get? With any luck Chaisson will only harm his teammates and not the student body.

Stoops and Soons are fine.........they'll get an NC again some day..........look at the Steers .........once in the last 40 years...heck, we win the Big 12 title and play for the National crown whether we beat 'em or not......
The Picker

Gene, hey, come on, lighten up, Stoops has rules: No killing.
Gene M

Mr. Picker, this reminds me of another OU Coach. I think his name was Schweitzer. Some of that guy's players were on the cover of Sports Illustrated . . . in their prison garb. By the way, have you been out to Fair Meadows Tabernacle for the praayer services yet?
Gene M
tattoo, give me their names so your allegation has some credibility. While Stoops talks about the charges being reduced to misdemeanors, look at the number of hours meted out as punishment. The last guy to do community service for that length of time was Prentis Elliott.

I think that replacing some of their defensive staff members would help (even OU's top DC). Teams are at their best when coaches are replaced every four years or so. Sometimes, changes in coaches can help a team tremendously. Texas fired Carl Reese, then hired Dick Tomey and Greg Robinson. The defense improved from 2003. After those two left, they hired Gene Chizik and won the national title. In 2007, they fired their DC (not Chizik, since he was at Iowa State) and hired Will Muschamp. I think that Stoops should consider shaking things up with his coaching staff.
Gene M

tattoo, i don't equate a tax dispute with "cheating" so I missed that one. I also believe that Stoops could have found a player who isn't compelled to use a firearm to settle his disputes. I'll bet there are even players in Oklahoma who don't own a firearm. Those young men who resort to firearms at such an early age rarely do well with second chances. Its too easy to return to old habits when in a perceived jam. Your suggestion that Picker is my mentor probably has him laughing out loud so thanks for the compliment.
