Stoops Tackles Critics
Published: 6/26/2009 3:53 PM
Last Modified: 6/26/2009 3:53 PM

In a pump-up-the-cheering-volume stopover in Tulsa, OU coach Bob Stoops answered the clarion call for "Defense!" by getting defensive about his five straight BCS bowl losses, comparing his Sooners to golfer Phil Mickelson, who has five second place finishes in the US Open.

Bad comparision.

First, OU hasn't come in second five times. Has it ever come in second?

Losing to USC, Boise and WV puts you well below the runner-up spot.

Next, Mickelson is known for, and there is no rugged way to put this, missing baby putts under pressure.

As Mickelson would rather talk about winning the Greater Sheboygan Open, so, too would Stoops rather discuss beating bums from the Big 12 North.

Coach, coach, coach: Get defensive on the field, not off it!

There's a pretty simple way to redirect the talk: win a big one.

Hey Licker,
You miss all the Big XII Championships OU is racking up? How many other coaches are getting their teams to those big games? And USC and WV weren't close, but the others could have gone either way and you know it. Did you see what OU was doing before Stoops got there? You really think he isn't a great coach? Few coaches are doing what OU is doing, which is winning. It's not like there are coaches out there who are winning it all every year. Are there? Am I missing some team that has won six in a row? Is OU or Stoops to be held responsible for other Big XII teams, not being better? We can only play the teams in our conference. How about USC being in the Pac-10. Is it fair that they get ranked high by beating up a group of teams that are worse than anything in the Big XII? And even they keep losing at least once a year.
It's been a while since I posted on here, but I know you know who I am. I'll keep posting as long as you're going to continue to say silly things.

Michael....looks like you'll be posting for a long time to come.

Michael C....I like your style.

If Pick was just one tenth as good a writer as Stoops is a coach he would be famous and not a hack.

He just does this to agitate the fans. Probably makes his readership numbers acceptable.
ken7 (4 years ago)
I told u pick, say something remotely bad about the gooners and their little baby fans come out to cry!!!!
Michael C. (4 years ago)
Ken7: It's not that he said something bad about the Sooners, it's that he seems ignorant for a sports writer. Where as you, on the other hand, just seem like a fool. I'd say something bad about OSU, but that would be like making fun of a retarded blind kid. And that's not right.
rogerq (4 years ago)
A hack? the picker only picked the ncaa basketball champion, picked the score of the BCS campionship game, picked the score of the superbowl. what else has he hacked? i'm as big of a sooner fan as anyone but he's right; as much as i wish he weren't.

In order to justify the Picker's comments one would have to go back to each of OU's big losses and dissect the reasons why each happened. Then, one could assess whether glaring waeknesses at key positions were the cause, the breaks of the game (a Texas loss or two come to mind), or fundamental failures at critical moments in decisions made by the coaching staff itself. In many games all these factors come into play, sort of like mechanical problems causing planes to fall. Should OU's defense have been able to compete against Boise and West Va? One would certainly have thought so. Remember when a very well coached Washington team ran over a Switzer OU team with umpteen NFL type players simply by taking advantage of OU's defensive quickness off the snap by running misdirection plays? No adjustment by OU at the half and nothing changed.Another time an obviously inferior Arkansas team came out and whipped a much better equipped OU team in the Orange Bowl from the kick-off. I don't remember anyone taking serious looks at Switzer when those things happened. You really have to analyze each loss.

Does anybody out there remember the 1990's at all? They WERE TERRIBLE and I personally thank coach Stoops for having an exciting winning team year in and year out. Everybody needs to get off his back and remember that it could be much worse and we could be dreaming of a big 12 championship. The football program brings a lot of money to the school that goes all over believe it or not. This year is very intriging and it could be one for the ages. BOOMER SOONER!!!
Lance-a-lot (4 years ago)
So, Alum, being terrible in the 90's is an excuse for being an also ran now?
Michael C. (4 years ago)
An 'also ran'?! LOL
That's, by far, the funniest AND stupidest thing I've read in a long time!
ken7 (4 years ago)
Michael C.= typical gooner fan who couldn't find Norman on a map of Cleveland county!! LOL
Lance-a-lot (4 years ago)
Michael C.: if you go to a "big game" (BCS or NC game) 5 times, and you lose all 5 (some not even close)...you are an also ran...sorry, but the truth hurts.
rogerq (4 years ago)
hey ken that's big talk from the 4th best team in the big 12 south, congratulations on that.

I never knew it was a requirement to attend the university that you're a fan of. But then again the only fans of OSLose are alums, or there wouldn't be any at all.
Jt4OU (4 years ago)
lot of talk from the OSU fans, who haven't done squat in football, how many Big12 Champ. trophies do they have??? hmmmmmmmmmm.
MexiMike (4 years ago)
Ken, as an OSU fan I have to ask you to shut up. You are putting down "gooner" fans for being the same breed of fan that you are. Be better than that.

Michael C, is refering to all OSU fans as "retarded blind kids" any worse than making fun of them? Doubt it. Stay classy.

Rogerq, the whole "4th best team" slam is a spin that holds less and less water each time used. When 4 teams are ranked in the top 15 in the BCS poll and they all happen to be from the same division, somebody has to be 4th. That doesn't make them a bad team. It makes the division that good. You're reaching.

Also, it's not a requirement to attend the university you are fan of but it is definitely obvious when you run into one of those fans that has never attended ANY institute of higher learning. They tend to use brilliant terms like "OSLose" and "Stoolwater." Yes, your 10 year old thinks it's funny, but then again, he's 10 years old, isn't he?

All good points Mike.

Roger, easy for you to say buddy. The only diploma you have is one from an 8th grade graduation. Yay for you. That explains why you are an OU "fan".

Michael C, no need to get testy on here. Picker makes a lot of people mad. Some of it is truth, some of it is not.

In this case, it is mostly truth.
SUEA (4 years ago)
Lance-a-lot - you're an also ran in the Bedlam series and that definitely hurts....you should get your buddies Ken, Mex, and Outpick and go change Lewis Field to NGAF Field...................No Good at Football....oh yes, that ol truth most definitely hurts.....
OutPickMyNose (4 years ago)
Haha Suea.

Honestly, that is comical. You win the award for most educated OU post. Here.....I have one for OU. TIBG Field....Terrible In Big Games Field.

You are right, OSU is terrible at football. And all things, for that matter. Right?

How is that OU degree treating you, Suea?
The Picker (4 years ago)
Michael C: So we agree. Stoops' most important recent wins were against the Big 12 North, arguably the worst collection of teams on the continent.

Wins against OSU are big, no doubt about it. But against a horrific defense.

So if a person is to be fair, Sooner fan or neutral observer on a rock in Montana, it is accurate to say that in the last nine biggest games, five BCS bowls, and the last four Texas games, Stoops is 1-8.

That has nothing to do with where OU was a decade ago.

It is a proven fact that Stoops rescued OU from the depths of dispair.

But in the last 9 biggest games, something is missing.

Only homers could deny that.

The question is, what's 1-8 about?

Our theory is: a defense too complicated. If receivers come up uncovered year after year after year, big game after big game, it means something.

meximike and gopickyournose i in fact do have a university degree, and a masters too. it just so happens that i disowned my university because I'm a Redman forever and there are no more Redmen. so show your diploma before you start judging people.
rogerq (4 years ago)
meximike then maybe you should move to the mountain west or the lone star conference to get the success you desire. In my book 4th out of 6 isn't that good no matter where you're ranked in the polls. and i have no children and i wasn't trying to be funny, i was digging at you and it worked.

and ken7 if being a fan requires attendance at that particular university then i'll take you one step further: being a fan should require that you were an athlete. I was all district football and soccer in high school. I was an all district collegian too. I set 7 school records, 5 in my freshman year at the university level, top 10 at my position in the country. One of my records stood for 19 years before it was broken.
SoonerDJ (4 years ago)
Why is it a big game when OU loses, but when they beat a ranked team it's buisness as usual. The only loses OU should be ashamed of is the loses to USC and WVU. I hate to say it, but I think the difference between the early successful season and then the post season losses of later years is Mike Stoops. Before he left we had won the majority of the big games. Afterwards not nearly as much. I'm not saying Brent isn't a good DC, but I don't think he is as good as Mike. I still doubt OU would have beat UT in 05' or beat USC in the NCG though.

The bottom line is OU has been one of the best teams in the country. Not many teams have had the conference or national success over the last 10 years.*

*Disclaimer: This post should be disregarded due to the lack of a collegiate degree or attendance to the University of Oklahoma by the poster.

What up, tooth pick in nose ?? we'll throw out TBGF,NGAF, OU national titles in football, OSU national titles in football(ha ha), Degrees (meaningless where you go to school).........you're 0-0 and I'm 0-0.....I'll concentrate on a 4th straight big 12 title, and you might want to figure out how to beat Texas.....lol
OutPickMyNose (4 years ago)
Suea, figure out how to beat Texas? Same to you buddy, in case you don't know UT has been owning OU as of late.

Roger, how would you like me to "show" my diploma? Should I mail it to you? I am not saying it matters where you attended college. But you can always tell an OU "fan" who never went to OU. They are on these boards talking smack, like yourself and silly little SUEA. No class.

Of course it is meaningless where you went to school. That is easy for you two to say. You never went to a meaningful school.
OutPickMyNose (4 years ago)
Tattoo, I find it funny when you call anyone a "hick".

A "hick" is what many people from other states call all Oklahomans. A "hick" is someone who generally speaking can be considered "white trash". I think OU has plenty of those "hicks" running around (including yourself).

Next time you refer to anyone as a "hick", you may want to think of another term. It offends everyone and no fan base in Oklahoma is safe from them.
