Stoops Worshippers Relax

Bob isn't texting us! No landscapers are on the grounds of Bob's new estate! Bob, Bob, say something, do something, Bob, please give us a sign!

Get serious people.

Bob Stoops has the greatest job in sports.

That doesn't mean that he won't get tired of finishing fifth in the nation and leave one day.

But he will never, ever, find a better job, not even close.

Here's why.

You want to coach in the SEC? That breeding round of punkish behavior, shady dealings, where the competition and the boosters are insane?

Look at the Big 12 Minus Two Conference by comparison. Texas wishes it could be like Baylor. All that's left down there is the old steer and Mack and a quarterback who couldn't hit the broad side of a receiver. With top assistants bolting, the Big 12 feels soft.

You want to coach in the NFL? Some fun place like with the Redskins, where the players won't take no for an answer unless they're giving it? Just look at what Pete Carroll is doing in the Witness Protection Program in Washington state. He's all wet already.

You want to deal with an objective media instead of something like the OKC puppets? Outside of the terrific John Hoover of this publication, most of the media members are like roadies to the Stoops song and dance revue.

Stoops to remain in coaching paradise.

Wow, there's a story for you.

So the Picker now declares that the OKC sports media, in entirety, is incompetent and only a writer from his own paper is worth his salt. Close to crossing a line there Picker.

Gotta receive the news with mixed feelings. Big relief if you are a fan of status quo; not so great news if you were entertaining thoughts of luring Gary Patterson from TCU to Norman. Stoops finally scooted Josh up a notch; time to see if his coaching skills--which he's been honing since he was about 8 years old--are on a par with his playing skills circa 2000, but what's Norvell going to do besides recruit? I suppose he could fill Morris Tenenbaum's old spot, handing out chewing gum to the players as the enter and exit the locker room. Now...if we could just establish some defensive consistency.

Anybody know why Venables hasn't gotten a job after all these years?
Gene M (2 years ago)
Mr. Picker, Coach Venables is still in Norman because he is bringing the concept of loyalty to a new level. Surely he has had several other offers.
Wonder why Coach Stoops didn't bring Jason White, another Heisman winner, back to the family by naming his the offensive coordinator?
Have a Merry Christmas...........
wgspost (2 years ago)
He has had NO other offers...are you serious? But you are right about one thing...Venables' remaining in Norman is an exercise in reckless loyalty...not Venables to Stoops, but Stoops to Venables. Why is it that Brent can field a team that looks like a Montessori team for nine games and then suddenly rear up and plays like Switzer's 1974 defense in two games? That, my friend, is inconsistency. He isn't being offered jobs elsewhere because others can see what he is NOT doing in Norman. When Pelini served as co-defensive coordinator alongside Venables, the two couldn't stand one another...barely spoke...and the result was obvious. So what happened? Pelini left for LSU and Venables remained. And he will continue to remain until he gets a shot at a head-coaching position elsewhere (should he ever be able to put an entire season of effective defense together at one time...) or until Stoops leaves; Stoops will never...ever...let Venables go. Too loyal. To a fault.

Gee Picker, I think your jealousy is showing. Yeah, Hoover's good but your own Dave Sittler is the one breaking the news. And after all, Picker, isn't that what newspapers/websites etc. are SUPPOSED to do??? And when others are reporting that Stoops is signing a contract elsewhere, isn't it the job of your reporters to get the right information? Ease up, there Mr. Picker. Give credit where credit is due and maybe Stoops will wind up texting you. You can then show it to your grandkids ...

Gosh...just think of it...a text message from Bob Stoops. Golly gee...willikers.

Picker, what's your take on Mack Brown's future? Will the rabid Longhorn boosters allow him to continue?
The Picker (2 years ago)
Tulsaadguy, Texas has BYU at home and is at UCLA next season, no cupcakes, either.

Mack seems to have lost a step.

One, how can you not know a quarterback is average?

Two, how can you keep playing one who is?

Stoops loses five and gets a raise. Mack's losing record could double his salary. Football money is funny.

Same ol' picker column
Smart*** comments about OU
Jealous of OKC media
Where's the Thunder jealousy?
Oh wait, I forgot, you do have the Shock
The Picker (2 years ago)
It's true, hanging out with the OKC Sooner media clones is something to which we aspire. Trade stories about the times we had bowl beers with the kicking coaches, etc.

I like you Picker. I agree with you quite a bit except when it comes to picks. Not sure what that says about me but I have to like a guy that is going to give me a fridge. Keep the "Homies" in their place.
The Truth Hurts (2 years ago)
I like it better when you rip on Tulsa local sports radio. Whats Jerkens' show up to, 20th, 21st in town?
Glenn616 (2 years ago)
Venables hasn't gotten a head coaching job because his defenses are out of position too often and have too many busted assignments. Year after year, the same things keep occurring. However, Coach V. doesn't try new defensive philosophies. When a defense has talent, but lacks discipline, that's on the coaching staff.

Stoops has a great job at OU, where he can actually get away with losing 5 straight BCS Bowl Games. How would the fans from SEC schools like Alabama and LSU react to 5 straight BCS bowl game losses? Not too kindly.

Picker no like Stoops. Picker want John Blake as coach.

The Picks, year in year out the best, funniest and spot on reality check for all the lemmings and homers. No matter where I am in the world, come Thursday morning it's time to read the column that never fails to give me a chuckle.
Spot on comments about the media and "medium game Bob," he has it made and most likely will never leave. He could probably get the Norman City Council to declare emanate domain and seize the areas surrounding his mansion, so he could build a golf course right out his front door.
If you can’t sit back and give pause to think about what the World Famous Picks has to say, then you are devoid of humor, objectivity and comprehension. IMHO a Pulitzer Prize is inline someday for this column.
Keep em coming Picks!

Had to chuckle when I read that last blog entry. Picker, I'd swear you had written it yourself had 'imminent' not been misspelled (or perhaps you misspelled it intentionally to comply with the literacy standards of the Daily Oklahoman). When I relocated from Tulsa to St Louis in the late nineties - before the proliferation of the internet and news files - I had friends clip out and mail the Picker column on a weekly basis; never failed to produce a smile at least or a belly-laugh at best. Time to stop lest I further inflate Pick's ego...

What a wonderful thing, the spirit of the season having engulfed numerous readers.

We all know it won't last.

It's true, one of our most important functions is to keep an eye on media hacks, local and global. Too many of these people can dish it but can't field it. One of our proudest accomplishments is when media freeloaders get together and curse us over gratis grub. It is nice to know that the readers are there to rise up as one and call out the bums and squash their biases in the name of fairness. You can love your team while being objective.

As re: the OSU offensive coordinator leaving. Some people wonder why take such a job? Listen, the kid playing the dueling banjo on the bridge isn't in the WV band. The OSU guy won't be in a remake of Deliverance. WV is a top 35 job. He had to take it.

Have to confess, am not the picker and my spelling is suspect at times but is rendered spell check error free on Microsoft word. WGSPOST, same here, living in Wyoming my folks clipped out the Picks every Thursday and mailed them too me, at school as well. When my sister errantly threw away my picks collection from the very beginning, I went to the library and photo copied all the missing Pick's installments. This collection is nestled snuggly between Patton: A Genius For War and The Art of war by Sun Tzu. The genius is the humor and ability to point out the obvious to non-homers and objective soul’s throughout the universe.
Two of my all time favorites were “Fred Akers would have surrendered the Alamo” when he punted with maybe 2 minutes left in the RRR and was behind. The second was the Nebraska runner that use to reference himself as “Endzone Jones” after playing OU the Picks said his name should be “Hospital Zone Jones” brilliant stuff. There are many more of course but, sheer genius though. If you can’t laugh at this stuff it’s incredibly sad.

Man, Valhalla, saving the Picker's columns for posterity is beyond the pale...I mean, I like *******, but his ego can get the better of him at times. And as far as Sun Tzu goes, I tried reading him, von Clausewitz, and Homer in high school but quickly realized that I didn't have the gray matter to wade through it...might have helped had there been some pop-up figures like George W. Bush has in his "tome". I'm personally of the opinion that there is nothing as mundane and uninteresting as yesterday's sports page, no matter how many laughs, tears, or yawns it may have offered when fresh.

It's the highlight of the week reading the picker. I have to admit that some of the posts are now getting better than the article.

Amen...the Pick hits a HR after a bit of a slump. The best fantasy writer in the world couldnt make up a job as good as the one B Stoops has: ridiculous money plus ridiculous bonuses on top of crazy salary. The only game in town, (sorry Poke fans), best of the best facilities, blindly loyal fan base, great place to raise a family where $5 mill is like 10 in most markets, great, loyal assistants, and a admin that kisses HIS butt, not the other way around. The haters can try and say UF or UT a better job...but they are not.

What in the world is going on here? I step away for a little bit and everyone is holding hands and stroking an ego that long ago reached maximum size? I am used to WGPOST being around the picker just in case an aroma escapes Pick, but wow I didn't expect it to be contagious. Pick I have always liked the column, especially when you are wrong, which is almost always, so I really enjoy it. But this is almost nauseating, "I went down to the archives and copied those my sis threw out!" I almost cried when I read that. I have Rockwellian painting envisioned in my mind of Wg, dcood, jhpoke and valhalla gathered around thursday paper, or was it Saturday Evening Post? At barber shop, everyone reading every word, back in the long, long ago. Ah, they don't make em like the ol' Picker anymore, sigh.

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
