Stoops back to voting in coaches poll

IRVING, Texas -- After relieving himself of coaches poll duties for a year, Oklahoma's Bob Stoops is back in. He confirmed to the World at Big 12 Media Days Tuesday that he would cast a ballot in 2009.

A year ago, Stoops decided not to, telling the World's Dave Sittler: ""The biggest reason (for not voting) is that I think all the polls come out too early. And they (BCS officials) have diminished the strength of schedule.

"There are other reasons, but I choose not to elaborate on them."

The coaches poll remains a BCS component. And with the BCS standings playing such a key role in how OU's 2009 season turned out -- the Sooners won a three-way Big 12 South tiebreaker with Texas and Texas Tech because they had the highest BCS ranking -- Stoops likely felt it would be to his advantage to return to the poll.

My opinion here is that Stoops didn't want to have other coaches, critics and college football fans to think he helped the Sooners get into the Championship games by a vote when he believes that his team can prove it on the field. Maybe he feels that won't be a determining factor this year. I don't doubt coach Stoops choices. He usually has very valid reasons in his choices (like pulling himself out of the voting last year). Remember, he doesn't like to give injury reports due to gambling spreads being set based on certain players' injury outcome. If he chooses to have this year's jersey's changed to pink instead of crimson than I believe he has a valid reason. Boomer Stoops!
