Stoops on Jefferson controversy: 'It makes no sense for us not to back our kids'

Bob Stoops dropped by James Hale's show on Norman's KREF last week. Some highlights...

On the recent Tony Jefferson controversy:

"You never know where things begin or who says (what). There's always a source. It makes no sense for us not to back our kids. When we go out recruiting, we want to brag on where Tony went. 'He went in the second round or the first round.' That's all we ever try and do.

"Bottom line here, either nothing is said or it's positive… Here's the thing: People aren't asking us how a guy practices. They come to practice all through the year. They watch us in two-a-days. They watch us in the spring. Every team comes through here multiple times. They see what a guy's doing or not doing.

"If somebody made a comment or if they saw somebody on a particular day and that scout wants to say something about it, I can't help that. But anything's that said here is either positive or not said."

On cornerback Aaron Colvin returning for his senior season:

"It's the right thing, I believe in my heart, for Aaron. He is an incredible talent and he has a chance to be one of those special players, maybe to compete for the Thorpe Award, be a first-team All-American.

"Last year he had shoulder surgery. He missed all winter and a good part of the summer with lifting. He didn't have spring ball. So I think he's going to continue to make strides. I strong believe as he does that his draft position will dramatically improve. That will be a positive thing for him...

"He's going to make big gains. That's what you want. You want to move up the draft board. Then you're making a lot more money."

On fans expecting national titles, not Big 12 titles:

"That's OK. That's the way it is. I'd rather be at a place that expects that than one that doesn't. I've been part of all the winning and success. We have won two of the last three Big 12 championships. In the last three years there's only two teams that have won more football games than us.

"But again, we didn't win the national championship this year. We'll just keep trying and hopefully we can keep winning conference championships while we're doing it."

On recruiting:

"I'm excited about it. The guys that are committed I feel great about. We've still got one or two we could possibly go with. We've still got a few kids coming (for visits) and we're still finishing with a few guys. To this point, it's been really positive. I feel like we've got a lot of really good players in the areas we need them."

Did James Hale ever ask Bob Stoops: Did any OU coach ever tell a NFL Scout that Tony Jefferson did not work hard enough or put out enough effort?

Did he ever ask Bob Stoops straight up to deny the report?

Stoops never said it made no sense, never denying it was said by an OU coach..

James Hale is a tool. Most knew it would be Hale trying to do spin control. More Brownie Points .

Why didn't Hale ask Stoops: How come OU players in the NFL often give their HS as their alma mater where they played and not OU in their pre-game introductions?

Just listened to Chris Chester and Trent Williams do it in their last game for the Redskins. Seems like Jerry Schmidt was quoted on the record with some left handed compliments about Trent before he signed his rookie year.
