Stoops on realignment: 'I'll be surprised if it happens this quick'

Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe and University of Oklahoma president David Boren were among the heavyweights who addressed Big 12 realignment/expansion/upheaval Thursday.

(Beebe to WHB Radio in Kansas City: "We need to have a very frank conversation about where we're going and who's going to be on the plane when we take off." Boren to Jeff Latzke of the Associated Press: "We're very happy with the Big 12 Conference and we certainly expect to stay in the Big 12 Conference. And I really think that the likelihood of any of the schools leaving the conference is really being blown out of proportion. I think the conference will stay intact.")

Also weighing in was OU coach Bob Stoops, when asked about the issue by KWTV-OKC sports director Dean Blevins.

"I guess I'm just never surprised," Stoops said. "I say it a lot. In life, very little stays the same forever. There are always things evolving and changing. It will be interesting to see where it all shakes out.

"I'll be surprised if it happens this quick. I would think it's going to take some time. But I wouldn't doubt in the future that who knows. Like everyone talks about, there may be four huge conferences of 16 teams or so...

"I don't sit and worry about it because I'm not going to be the player that makes the difference in it. Joe (Castiglione) and I confer in our conference meetings. It's been talked about. We didn't just start talking about it this year...

"I still think at Oklahoma we'll be in good shape one way or the other. With the size of the stadium and the following we have, the tradition, we'll be a player for somebody."

Stoops doen't want realignment, he's "skeered" of real competition or else he would have taken the Florida job when it was offered before they hired Meyer. But can you blame him? Why take a team that you really have to prepare to play every week when you can stay at OU, prepare for Texas and then put it cruise for the rest of the season for $4mil?? Or maybe he just likes the weather and red dirt better than Florida...Not!!

Tim Tebow is that you? I think you have Mack Brown's scheduling strategy mixed up with Stoops'.

I think the last paragraph says everything..
Change is coming!
Oklahoma can either stay in a shrinking conference should Missouri and or Colorado jump. The big 12 could try to pick up some new meat with BITE to get the TV revenue, but this only creates a domino effect for other conferences. I still favor Oklahoma and Texas jumping to the Pac 10 becoming the Pac 12...if they were to be asked.

It used to be about how close you were to most of your schedule opponents as a key factor. Those days appear to be over...somewhat due to the BCS!

Now the deal is about money and rankings.
Flying 500 miles for a game or 1500 miles makes no difference if the TV payoff is worth the play..

I'm glad the powers that be at OU are looking at the possible changes in the
current conferences. Of course the best bet would be for OU to join Texas in joining the southwest division of the Pac 16. We most likely already play
4 of the 7 other members and all those games would be central and mountain time zones. If you want to be a part of a super conference in the future, teams are going to have to travel. People are going to have to learn to think outside the box or get left behind. I hope my sooners are proactive and see the potential of the new Pac 16.

Forget the PAC 16....let's play in the SEC! Can you imagine Saturday's in the fall in Norman?! I can, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed! We're Oklahoma!! We ain't skeerd of competition! That's why we load up our OOC schedule like we do. If we move to the SEC, we won't have to do that anymore.....although we probably will.....because we are Oklahoma!!
