It was weird seeing Oklahoma alongside Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Purdue and South Florida among potential destinations for former Miami quarterback Robert Marve. That was the word according to Miami and Tampa newspapers, whose writers spoke with Marve's father and high school coach.
Our man Dave Sittler has since reported that OU, in fact, is not in the Marve sweepstakes, that Bob Stoops likes Sam Bradford, Landry Jones and Drew Allen just fine thanks.
You can practically hear the collective sigh of relief from Sooner fans who just heard from Jerry Bomar again last week.
Marve, like Rhett Bomar, has prodigious talent. He broke Tim Tebow's single-season Florida prep records for passing yardage and touchdowns in 2006.
Marve, like Bomar, has perilous issues.
He was suspended from Miami's Emerald Bowl loss to Cal because of a class attendance policy violation. He was suspended from the Hurricanes' 2008 opener after being charged with two misdemeanors as a result of an incident that occurred during his redshirt season of 2007.
Eugene Marve, Robert's father and a former NFL linebacker, originally said his son would return to Miami for his sophomore season. Then the family reversed course, prompting a soap opera in which Miami restricted the schools Marve could transfer to, and Eugene Marve blasted Hurricanes coach Randy Shannon publicly.
The Miami Herald reported Stoops contacted the Marves, and listed OU, OSU, Purdue and South Florida among the young quarterback's next possible schools. The Tampa Tribune added Texas Tech to the list.
Well, we now know Marve will be the Cowboys', Boilermakers', Red Raiders' or Bulls' headache. Not the Sooners'.
