Stoops talks players reporting, Jaz Reynolds and dealing with the heat

Bob Stoops held a golf event at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club on Monday morning.

After the four-hour scramble (weather didn’t play a factor until the final few holes), Stoops held a brief Q-and-A session with the media.

Stoops talked about the players reporting this week, Jaz Reynolds’ inclusion in a team roster released by the school and incoming WR Lacoltan Bester, among other items:

How did the morning go on the golf course?
“We were nine or 10 under. It didn’t amount to anything just enough to finish out of the money. It was fun, though. But during this time of year, we’re all anxious to get on the field and coach.”

It wasn’t too hot out there today was it?
“No, it was fine. It wasn’t bad at all. There was a good breeze.”

This is a common question every year, but can you talk about how the players deal with the elements during practice?
“You have to be very aware of nutrition as well as hydration. We’ll space out our practices and we’re usually pretty good about that. We’ll go real early in the morning or late at night to stay away from the worst part of the day.”

Is this the most exciting part of the year for you?
“Sure it is. We’ll always anxious to get back on the field. We’ll do what we do. That’s coach.”

You mentioned about going early. Will it be like yesterday when you went 6:30 a.m.?
“On Friday, we have class all day. I can’t go until Friday night. Saturday, though, because of Fan Appreciation Day, we’re going to go real early, like around 6 (a.m.) The other days, when they’re out of class, we’re on the field at 9. We have meetings first and then we get on the field and go real early. On days we have two-a-days, one will be at six in night and the other at eight in the morning.”

You can’t eliminate everything that players go through in terms of heat and heat illness, but did that help last year?
“Absolutely. For a number of years, we’ve been doing it. The days we have two practices and making sure they have two full meals in them before we’re back on the field … If you’re on the field early, the worst part of the day isn’t until somewhere around 3-4-5 o’clock. If you can avoid that, you are OK.”

Is there anything you can tell us? There was a roster released with Jaz Reynolds name on it?
“I don’t know where that came from. It wasn’t from me. (After being informed that the roster was on a school website) “Well a lot of things come from the University that are old mail, you know what I mean? I haven’t made any of those determinations yet. I will by Thursday when we’re allowed to have 105 guys practice. I’ll have that, like I just said, cleaned up by Wednesday, None of that has changed.” (Note: Stoops said he’ll likely release the roster to the media on Thursday).”

How did the (ESPN) Car Wash go?
“It was fine. It was routine. Because everything was time-slotted, everything was like clockwork. It was good.”

Can you talk about Lacoltan Bester?
“We’re definitely excited about Lacoltan. He’s got size, speed, competitive. I’m excited about him. I think he’s going to end up being a really good football player for us.”

Sooner fans need to cross their fingers on Bester because according to Hoover's tweets, Courtney Gardner is no go for this year.
