Stoops to Feel Warmth or Heat?
Published: 8/31/2009 3:51 PM

In a national call-in Sporting News Radio poll over the weekend, listeners were asked to name the most overrated college football coaches as the 2009-10 season begins.

Leading this downer list were -- Al and Dean, maybe you should take a deep breath -- Notre Dame's Charley Weis and OU's Bob Stoops!

Surrounded by cheerleader media types, and made queasy by the Eastern Sports Promotional Network (ESPN), we sometimes lose perspective with the national perception.

The race to most overrated between Weis and Stoops is at least slightly understandable. Notre Dame has embarrassed even leprechauns. And Stoops is 1-8 in his last 9 big games -- losing three or four to Big Mack at Texas, and shockingly, losing five straight BCS bowl games, including the West Virginia nightmare, when the Venables defense looked lost in space.

It has become official: beating Big 12 North bums is not as important as defeating Texas, or winning bowls.

With the possibility of less talent being on hand next year, this Texas game could be the most important ever for Stoops. Losing four of five to your chief rival? Perhaps a change in terminology would help. Texas isn't a big game, it's bigger. Blockbuster Game Bob?

Mr. Picker, I say we raise the salary for Coach Stoops so he is paid a comparable amount to the coaches who keep kicking his backside.  I'm sure that if he were paid at the same level as the Coach at Boise State, for example, he would perfom at that level.

Are we nearing the point when teams will be lining up to schedule OU for their homecoming opponent?

Funny.  I remember a time when Stoops beat Mack Brown 5 years in a row (including a couple 60 pointers) and people said the MACK was overrated.

I'd say that Weis is FAR more overrated than Stoops is.

I predict
       the score
         &n bsp;     will be
         &n bsp;         Home: 34, Away: 17.

Mike, the thing about Weis is, to be overrated, you have to have been rated in the first place.

You'd think the Florida State coach would get a few votes.

Also, the entire institution of Texas A&M!

You people be sure and enter the contest, the number of entries has flown over a thousand already. I'm sitting here waiting for a vision for the OSU-Georgia game. I thought OSU early, now I'm nervous.

Charlie Weis has never been highly rated as a coach. However, I do see Notre Dame winning 9 games (maybe 10), due to a weak schedule. Can Notre Dame please join a conference and play a real football schedule?

On Florida State, the Seminoles have not been relevant since the 2000 football season. If a team hasn't at all been in national title contention in almost a decade, should that team's coach still be considered overrated?

On Texas A&M, they won a single national title in 1939 and have hardly ever even been in contention for a national title since then. That's not exactly a rich football tradition.

It is pretty amazing for someone to say that a coach can win 6 conference titles in 9 years and be overrated. Actually, amazing isn't the right word. Ridiculously idiotic is a better phrase.

If Stoops is to get criticized for winning conference championships in a weak conference, then Mack Brown should be criticized for NOT winning them.  Refresh my memory.  How many has Mack won since Stoops has been at Oklahoma?  One or two?  Also, I think that 95 percent or better of D1 schools would LOVE to have Stoops and his staff, including Venables.

"Mike, the thing about Weis is, to be overrated, you have to have been rated in the first place."

Good point. Let's just call Weis a dud.

Don't flip on the OSU game again, Pick! Stay true to your word! The TE's we have to replace Mosely are just as capable as he was. Orie Lemon was a big loss for sure, but Booker is the hardest hitter on the team and I have no doubts in his ability to start at MLB.

MM, OSU fans are flying away so fast, you can't tell the chickens without a menu.

Picker,

What are you talking about?

OSU fans are flying away? Where?

Makes no sense. We are still here and ready for Saturday.
MexiMike (3 years ago)
Count me in with OutPick.

I'm going nowhere but Stillwater on Saturday to watch my Pokes exact revenge.

GO STATE!!!!!!!!!dez saves the day"

OSU ALL the Way, I love your enthusiasm but the score will be much closer for the OSU game and nowhere near as close for the OU game.
