Stoops tops Big 12 coach rankings. Look who debuts at No. 2

The crew at Athlon ranked the Big 12 Conference coaches last week, notable because it's the first list including the two new Big 12 programs.

One of the newcomers fared extremely well – TCU's Gary Patterson ranked second behind Oklahoma's Bob Stoops.

You can't quarrel with the Stoops ranking. The only coach of any sport with a tighter grip on the conference over the past decade is Kansas' Bill Self.

That Patterson, yet to coach his first Big 12 game, ranks second is the latest sign that the Horned Frogs are going to be trouble.

Mike Gundy, by the way, checks in at No. 3 in Athlon's rankings, ahead of Mack Brown and Bill Snyder at Nos. 4 and 5.

The second five, in order, are Art Briles, Paul Rhoads, Dana Holgorsen, Tommy Tuberville and Charlie Weis.

By way of comparison, here's how the staff at CollegeFootballNews.com ranked the 10 Big 12 coaches in April of 2011 (on the basis of who they would want leading a program for the next five-plus years):

1 – Stoops

2 – Brown

3 – Gary Pinkel

4 – Gundy

5 – Briles

6 – Rhoads

7 – Tuberville

8 – Mike Sherman

9 – Turner Gill

10 – Snyder

Conclusions, based on the past year:

Gundy has made a big, big move.

Patterson is the new Pinkel.

Never underestimate Bewitching Bill Snyder.

Snyder is underrated in this poll. How can anyone rank Mack Brown ahead of him? Snyder routinely does more with less than any coach in the country.

I agree with JS. Snyder below Turner Gill? I would have him in the top 3. Who else could recruit at the end of the world and remain competitive?

Gundy should be number one, Snyder two, and Stoops three. This from a Sooner fan.
Boomer Sooners.

Gundy's team would have to beat Stoop's team about 9 more times in a row to be top 5. "I'm a man!" had a good year. Let's see him do it again.

Snyder must have been ranked so low on the CFN poll because of the criteria...on the basis of who they would want leading a program for the next five-plus years. The CFN ranking would appear to be based solely on his age and presumably them doubting that he can coach another 5+ years. I don't know how else anybody that knows anything about college football could rank him at the bottom. Considering the inherent advantages and limitations of the programs in the Big 8/Big 12, he's the best. No coach has done more with less. He's the anti-Mack Brown. The program that Stoops took over at OU was in shambles by sooner standards, but it was a powerhouse compared to what Snyder inherited at K-State. It was generally considered the worst Div 1 team in the country and had three consecutive winless seasons. Within 10 years, he had them ranked #1. This past year, with far less talent than the Oklahoma and Texas schools, his team was a last second touchdown away from winning the conference.
