Remember Big Brown?

The horse?

The one who had a crack in his hoof?

That's the one.

Rember the protests? The howling? People with signs who didn't quite understand what was going on, making demands anyhow.

They said: Don't let even a slightly injured animal race!

Don't risk the most minor injury!

Health at all costs! If the industry didn't listen, then the law or somebody should step in and lock the gates!

There can be no exceptions!

Don't compete at less then 100 percent; otherwise, close horse racing!

Well, Tiger Woods just played golf while hurt and wound up hurt much worse with a fracture that will keep him out of tournament at least this year; beyond that, who knows.

Given the uproar caused by the Big Brown business, we here at the Picker site can only call for the game of golf to be shut down immediately.

There is a bit of a difference. Tiger can talk. The horse cannot. Tiger can make the decision of whether or not he will compete with an injury. A horse cannot. I'm not saying I'm one of those who was picketing against Big Brown racing; I'm just saying this is a very lame argument.

The point is, in sports, accidents and injuries happen.

The point is, nobody in the horse racing game was any less caring than Tiger's medical people.

The only thing lame around here is the way people over-react without thinking, due in large part to blockheads on radio and television, people like Skip Bayless, who couldn't pick the winner of a replay.

Close down horse racing because of an injury?

Close down golf because of an injury?

People should think before they spring forth to fill the air.

My point is that you are trying to compare two injuries that cannot be compared. Not because of the severity of either or because of the difference between them but because one athlete can choose to pull out of a competition and the other cannot. People that are outraged over the Big Brown injury are so because they feel that the horse does not have a choice whether it competes or not. And that unfortunately, is a solid fact. Tiger Woods, on the other hand, could have pulled out of the US Open any time he wanted. Yes, injuries happen. But only humans can choose whether or not to compete with them. With that being said, I agree that Skip Bayless spews the most non-sensical prattle I have heard from a sports analyst. Somebody should stick him, Jim Rome, and Steven A. Smith on a deserted island.

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
